Abstract The intricate "Keyhole" structure at the center of the Carina Nebula will be imaged in several WFPC2 narrow-band filters. Ground-based images have shown that the structure of this region is entirely different in [S II] and [O III], and that especially the former shows a wealth of detail to the resolution limit. Broad-band images will also be obtained. It is expected that the HST images will reveal qualitatively new information about these structures, as has been the case with previous imaging of H II regions, of interest both scientifically and as public outreach. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7790( 3) - 12/04/97 11:14 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Four adjacent pointings will be made to cover the Keyhole ring structure with WFPC2. Each of the pointings will occupy one orbit, for a total of four orbits. The following filters and exposure times will be used at each pointing: Filter Exposure Expected S/N F502N 2 X 200 sec 22-33 F656N 2 X 160 sec 30-75 F673N 2 X 400 sec 12-45 F439W 1 X 5 sec F555W 1 X 3 sec F814W 1 X 4 sec Expected S/N ratios were evaluated from ground-based longslit spectroscopy from Peimbert M., Torres-Peimbert, S. and Rayo, J.F., 1978, Ap.J., 220, 516 Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Final target coordinates will depend on the date when the observations are scheduled, because orientation effects will require adjustments to ensure complete field coverage without gaps among the four WFPC2 pointings.
