Abstract We propose to map the complete WFPC2 region of the central Hubble Deep Field (HDF) with NICMOS Camera 3 at F110W and F160W. NICMOS imaging can make an invaluable contribution to the study of high redshift galaxies, particular at z > 1 where the rest-frame optical light redshifts into the near-IR. However, there are very few scheduled NICMOS imaging programs which will provide data on large numbers of z > 1 galaxies with both known redshifts and deep WFPC2 imaging. The HDF is the most intensively observed region of the sky for high redshift galaxy studies, and is the natural choice for a wide-angle NICMOS imaging survey. These data will yield immediate results because of the extensive information already in hand on HDF galaxies. Our proposed observations complement the GTO program already planned for the HDF, which will image a much smaller field (~ 1/7th the solid angle) to much greater depths. The GTO data will provide unique information about the faintest objects, but will include only a small number of objects with spectroscopic redshifts or z ~ 3 Lyman break galaxies. Imaging the complete HDF is an efficient way to ensure that NICMOS leaves a substantial archival legacy of imaging data on an unbiased sample of normal field galaxies at very large redshifts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7817( 16) - 04/21/98 18:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ ****************************************************************** IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, PLEASE SCHEDULE THESE OBSERVATIONS IN SAA-FREE ORBITS. The impact of cosmic-ray persistence during SAA orbits on our data would be extremely severe and could compromise the scientific aims of this project, which include the detection of faint galaxies without optical counterparts. Persistent cosmic ray "ghosts" can mimic faint galaxies, and could be a disaster for this project. ****************************************************************** THIS NIC3 OBSERVATION SHOULD BE SCHEDULED DURING ONE OF THE "CAMPAIGNS" IN WHICH THE TELESCOPE FOCUS IS ADJUSTED FOR NIC3 OBSERVATIONS. Under consultation with STScI, we are planning this observation for the second NIC3 campaign, to be executed in June 1998. Our ORIENT requirement has been set to ORIENT=112 in order to accommodate this time window. Please see discussion below which describes the observing strategy and ORIENT constraints. In order to optimally map the WFPC2 field of view, NICMOS Camera 3 should be oriented so that its pixel axes match those of the WFPC2 HDF data, modulo 90 degree rotations. This implies that the allowable +U3 ORIENT angles are 292, 202, 112 and 22 degrees, which correspond to observing windows roughly in December, March, June and September, respectively. In September the sun angle is small for HDF observations and thus the predicted zodiacal background is prohibitively high. December (1998) is beyond the expected cryogen lifetime of NICMOS. Therefore March and June (ORIENT = 202 or 112) are preferred. March is ideal because the background is low and the scheduling windows are long. We divide the HDF into 8 major NIC3 pointing positions which cover the complete WFPC2 field of view. These are designated as separate targets, named HDF-NIC-POS-1 through HDF-NIC- POS-8. Each of these target positions is divided into 9 dither positions using POS TARGs. Ultimately, we observe all 8 targets with all 9 dither positions through each of two filters, F110W and F160W, requiring 144 exposures in 72 orbits. Thus 9 orbits are requred to complete observations of one target position through both filters. In order to minimize the risk that any one position in the HDF is severely affected by persistent cosmic rays, we have broken the observations up into three shorter (3 orbit) visits. During each visit, three exposures are taken through each of the two filters, moving over 6 independent dither positions. At present, the visits use the special requirement SCHED 70%. Using RPS2, we have verified that this permits a total visibility window > 10 days long for this project -- very nearly the entirety allowed by our absolute ORIENT requirement. Primary observations are made using NIC3. NIC1 and NIC2 are operated in parallel in order to avoid the "bar" phenomenon in the detector readouts. Summary of visits: Visits 11-18 image all eight target positions with F110W + F160W, covering 3 dither positions per filter. F110W exposures are taken first. Visits 21-28 image all eight target positions with F110W + F160W, covering 3 more dither positions per filter. F160W exposures are taken first. Visits 31-38 image all eight target positions with F110W + F160W, covering 3 more dither positions per filter. Either F110W or F160W can come first, depending on whether the target number is odd or even. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None.
