PI: DOUGLAS GEISLER Kitt Peak National Observatory CoI: Jay Elias Kitt Peak National Observatory N CoI: Edward Ajhar Kitt Peak National Observatory N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract We propose to obtain deep F160W (H) integrated broadband photometry of the globular cluster systems of four giant elliptical galaxies. These data will be combined with existing WFPC2 F555W or F606W (V) data of these galaxies to provide a color index which maximizes metallicity sensitivity (tripling that of the traditional V-I index) while maintaining a low sensitivity to any age variations. Our photometry will allow us to measure the metallicities of 300-1000 globular clusters in each galaxy to a precision of 0.2 dex. This impressive database will allow us to definitively determine the metallicity distribution of the cluster system of each galaxy and unequivocally establish whether they are uni-, bi- or multi-modal, and thus help to constrain theories of globular cluster and galaxy formation. We will also determine the mean metallicity of each cluster system and add significantly to the database for understanding the relationship between this quantity and the parent galaxy luminosity and environment. These observations will have a significant impact on our understanding of the origin and nature of globular cluster systems in galaxies. In addition, we will explore the IR structure of the cores of these galaxies and measure independent H-band surface brightness fluctuation distances. This is an ideal use of IR data to significantly augment existing optical data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7820( 6) - 05/13/98 10:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our primary requirement is to obtain sufficiently precise H photometry to combine with existing V data in order to derive accurate metal abundances for about 500 GCs in each galaxy from the integrated (V-H) color. According to our adaptation of the Cohen and Matthews (1994) V-K calibration to V-H, we can derive abundances to 0.23 dex for a GC with Sigma (V) = Sigma (H) = 0.1, or S/N=10 in each filter. From their known distances and previous GC luminosity function (GCLF) work (e.g. Secker et al. 1995, Bridges and Hanes 1994, Baum et al. 1997), radial velocities, H_o=75, and a comparison with the very well-known GCLF in Virgo galaxies (e.g. Whitmore et. al 1995), we anticipate the turnover in the GCLFs of NGC3311, NGC4073, and the 2 Coma galaxies to lie at V~ 25.8, 27.5, and 27.8, respectively. Note that these galaxies are at high galactic latitude and that the reddenings are E(B-V)<=a 0.04 (Burstein and Heiles 1982 AJ, 87, 1165 and above references). For V, we will use the existing WFPC2 and F555W or F606W data, as detailed in the Scientific Justification. From existing WFPC2 studies (e.g. Baum et al. 1997 on IC4051), previous ground-based studies of the spatial distribution and total cluster populations in these galaxies, and a knowledge of the GCLF, we estimate that 1 PC field will contain ~ 490 GCs in NGC3311, 415 GCs in NGC4073, 1030 GCs in NGC4874 and 300 GCs in IC4051 to a limiting magnitude of V=26 in each case. Here we have assumed the PC is centered on the galaxy, which is the case for existing data and will be the case for scheduled observations. From the known central surface brightness of each galaxy (Schombert 1986, ApJS, 60, 603, 1987, ApJS, 64, 643; McLaughlin et al. 1995) and the exposure times, we will have no problem in obtaining our required precision in V (S/N=10 at the above mags) except for NGC4073. Here, only a total of 1700s in F555W are available. The WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator for point sources plus stellar background indicates we will only obtain S/N~ 7, or Sigma~ 0.14, at our limiting mag, for a surface brightness of Mu_V~ 20 mags/sq. arcsec. For the H data, we will use NIC2 and the F160W filter. A typical GC should have V-H~ 2.5, so we require S/N~ 10 for a limiting H magnitude of 23.5 in each galaxy. We will utilize the fact that the area of NIC 2 is almost exactly 1/4 the area of the PC so that in order to cover the entire PC field and take best advantage of the existing V data, we will observe 4 adjacent NIC 2 fields. The NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator shows that we achieve the desired S/N in one orbit per field, with the data taken as decribed below, for most of each field. For the very central regions, the accuracy is reduced. Specifically, for V~ 20 mags/sq. arcsec (expected only within ~ 1 arcsec of the center), S/N figures are reduced by a factor of 2. We will use MULTIACCUM and 10 reads per exposure and will take a series of 5 dithered exposures, using 0.75 arcsec steps. Each orbit will be broken down as follows: 6m guide star acquisition (6m subsequent orbits) +12s setup time +5* 512s exposures +5* 12s MULTIACCUM readout time +4* 12s dither time +90s data management time. It will then take 4 orbits total per galaxy to cover the area of the PC. We will also observe with NIC 1 which will give us some additional clusters if oriented properly but our primary camera will be NIC 2. If NIC 3 could be used, it would provide greater sensitivity (and areal coverage.) in regions of low surface brightness, but reduced performance in the high surface brightness regions of the galaxies, where the coarser pixels would force the use of larger apertures for the digital photometry. Thus, at the faint limit of the sample used to derive our metallicity distribution, a cluster will have S/N=10 in V and H, or Sigma (V-H)=0.14. This translates to a random metallicity error of only 0.23 dex. The rest of our MD sample will have even smaller metallicity errors. In NGC4073, Sigma (V-H)=0.17, or 0.3 dex at the faint end of our sample, still sufficient for our requirements.
