Abstract The surfaces of Centaurs and Trans-Neptunian Objects contain potentially unique records of early evolutionary processing (accretional and dynamical) in the outer solar system. The red colors (V-K~2-3) of the few objects observed to date facilitate observations in the 1-2.4um region which is also especially sensitive to absorption features of likely surface frosts and primitive organic materials. Because these objects are faint, near-infrared colors/spectra are available only for the ~5 brightest ones (V<=20.5) and progress remains slow. We propose to measure the spectral properties (R~10-20) of 8 unobserved Centaurs and TNOs from 1-2um using NICMOS grism B. By co-adding pixels, we will improve signal-to-noise at the expense of spectral resolution and can operate with NIC3 at its present focus. We will coordinate with our ongoing Keck and NICMOS GTO observations to measure spectral (R~10-20) properties from 1-2.4um, resulting in a total sample of 13 objects. The performance of the NICMOS grism both extends and complements our ongoing spectroscopy with the Keck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7822( 16) - 05/29/98 09:37 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ sectionExposure Times We will obtain low resolution spectra (R~10-20) of the brighter Centaurs and TNOs in the 1-2um region using the G141 grism. As demonstrated by the spectrum of 1993 SC, our scientific goals do not require the full, R=200, resolution of the grism. By effectively co-adding as many as ~20 adjacent spectral points, we can trade resolution for improved signal-to- noise, gaining as much as a factor sqrt20 in the latter. The resulting wavelength coverage of G141 remains much more continuous and more easily interpreted than the fragmented coverage provided by the NICMOS filter set alone. Since we are willing to sacrifice the natural grism resolution, our observations do not require any further improvement in NIC3 focus. At its present focus, NIC3 produces images with FWHM of 0.25 arcsec, compared to the 0.2 arcsec pixels. Exposure times have been estimated by the Exposure Time Calculator (ETC). An object of solar color with an H-band (1.6um) magnitude of 20 requires an exposure time of 500 sec to reach a SNR of 3 per pixel. By coadding 20 adjacent spectral points, this SNR becomes ~15, again comparable to that in our spectrum of 1993 SC. From existing photometry (Weintraub et al. 1997; Brown et al. 1997), a typical color for the known Centaurs and 1993 SC is V-H=~2. Thus, the above signal-to-noise and spectral resolution can be achieved for objects with V<=22. For several reasons, we believe the above signal-to- noise is conservative and that we can achieve at least another 0.5 magnitudes in sensitivity, allowing three of the brighter TNOs to be observed (1994 JV, 1996 RR20, 1997 RQ20). First, historical experience with NICMOS has shown that the ETC signal-to-noise estimates are conservative. Second, the ETC times refer only to a single pixel. Since 38% of the light from a point source falls outside a single pixel (with NIC3 in focus), there will be some benefit in coadding pixels spatially to compress a two-dimensional spectrum into one dimension. Third, it is possible, perhaps likely, that the typical V-H for our TNOs is redder than 2.0. For example, for the Centaur Pholus, V-H=~3. Fourth, it will be possible to combine at least three spectra per orbit to improve sensitivity. Finally, even if the above exposure estimates are accurate, we can continue to sacrifice spectral resolution to improve signal-to-noise if necessary. sectionObserving Strategy & Calibration We request one orbit per target to obtain grism spectra with G141 as well as photometric measurements with F150W and F196N. The F150W filter is necessary for calibrating the grism spectrum but requires only ~30 sec per target. Observations in F196N will cover the important absorption feature observed in 1993 SC at 1.9um where the grism sensitivity falls rapidly. The F196N data will also help connect the NICMOS spectrum to the longer wavelength spectrum obtained at Keck and provides data where telluric absorption is significant. An F196N observation requires about 700 sec per target. Assuming a conservative 2400 sec of observing time per orbit, it should be possible to obtain three grism spectra per target together in combination with the two filter measurements. We will dither HST between each grism observation in order to help remove the effects of 'grot' and bad pixels. Observations will utilize the MACCUM mode to provide lower read noise and to assist in removal of cosmic ray events. Since all but one of our targets lie at high galactic latitudes (>~+/-20 deg.), we may not need to roll HST significantly between grism exposures to help disentangle spectra in crowded fields. However, this will be necessary in the case of 1993 HA2 (i.e., 7066 Nessus). We will study the expected effects of crowding using CCD images of the fields obtained through our coordinating observations (see below). Since we propose to observe eight objects, we request a total of eight orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- As described in the scientific justification, an emphasis of our program is to coordinate with spectral observations obtained at the Keck telescope at somewhat longer wavelengths where NICMOS is relatively insensitive. NICMOS spectra will provide essential coverage of shorter wavelengths and of regions where telluric absorptions at 1.4 and 1.9um reduce the sensitivity and accuracy of ground-based spectra. NICMOS observations in filter F196N will help connect the two types of spectra and provide observations in the important absorption feature at 1.9um. The orbits of many TNOs have ephemeris uncertainties which are large enough to influence the placement of the spectrum on the detector array. Orbital uncertainty is not a problem for the Centaur targets. For the three TNO targets, we will obtain new astrometric information using the wide- field CCD cameras on the Steward Observatory 61" and 90" telescopes. We are already using this equipment for similar support of our GTO observations (e.g., 1995 QY9). Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The STScI TAC recommended that this program be done with NIC3 IN FOCUS. All these objects will require updated orbital elements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7822( 16) - 05/29/98 09:37 - [ 3] Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: Don McCarthy, University of Arizona, Steward Observatory, 933 N., Cherry Av., Tucson, AZ 85721-0065 Ship Via: Email: dmccarthy@as.arizona.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7822( 16) -
