Abstract Our analysis of WFPC and WFPC2 images of Saturn yielded powerful constraints on Saturn's vertical haze structure due to the availability of measuring center-to-limb variation very close to the limb of Saturn's disk. We propose to image Saturn in 12 NICMOS filters to extend our study to longer wavelengths. These wavelengths are more sensitive to probing variations of aerosol sizes than observations at visible wavelengths. The deeper methane bands in the near infrared will allow us to probe higher atmospheric levels more accurately than at visible wavelengths. The presence of pressure dependent hydrogen dipole absorption near 2 micrometer wavelength provides a valuable tool to vertical atmospheric sounding. Several open questions of Saturn's vertical atmospheric structure can be addressed within only one orbit due to Saturn's brightness. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7823( 8) - 11/25/97 09:59 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Selection of Filters: Filter F095N is similar to filter F953N used in our WFPC2 images and thus helpful to compare both data sets. Filter F108N probes the continuum while F113N probes a deep nearby methane band. This filter pair is a better pair probing continuum and nearby strong methane absorption than any pair available on WFPC2. Filter F165M probes the last continuum region unaffected by hydrogen dipole absorption; Saturn's albedo peaks here at a higher albedo than at other wavelengths. Filter F171M probes the core of the following very deep methane band while filter F180M probes a side peak. Filter F187W probes the whole methane window containing the hydrogen dipole absorption while filter F190N probes the peak of this window and filter F204M probes its long-wavelength wing. Filter F212N probes the methane band on the other side of the hydrogen dipole absorption. Filter F215N is centered on a small side peak. Filter F237M probes the lowest albedo and the highest atmospheric level. It is sensitive to haze optical depths of less than 0.01. The first three filters are imaged with NIC1, the other nine with NIC2. (1984). Following are the sensitivity from the NICMOS Handbook and exposure time. These three values multiplied yield the expected signal in electrons per pixel. The signal-to-noise ratio is expected near 100-300 in each pixel allowing detections of low-contrast features. The last column lists the thermal background from the NICMOS Handbook Timing: All 30 exposures fit into one orbit according to RPS2 7.1.2. Exposure Sequence: The disk of Saturn is 18*16 arc-seconds in January 1998. We take a mosaic of four images for each NIC1 filter with 11 arc-seconds field of view. For each of the NIC2 filters with 19 arc-seconds field, we take two images shifted by 3.5 pixels horizontally and 15.5 pixels vertically to improve sampling and to record data missing due to the coronographic hole or bad pixels in the other exposure. Cycling through all filters of each camera before moving on to the next position costs less overhead than cycling through all positions of a filter before selecting the next filter. Both cameras are used in parallel. While one camera is exposing Saturn, the other is recording dark frames. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Size of Saturn: Imaging Saturn's limb with the nine NIC2 filters works only if Saturn is smaller than the 19" field of NIC2. Leaving a 0.5" margin for pointing accuracy, the size of Saturn must be smaller than 18". Due to Saturn's oblateness, a size up to 18.5" can be accomodated for certain orientations. This gives an observing window from 20 December 1997 to 15 August 1998. Ring Tilt: The rings obstruct part of Saturn's disk. The obstruction is roughly proportional to the ring tilt. Observations in the winter with a ring tilt near 9 degrees are far superior to observations in the summer or fall with a 16 degree ring tilt. Phase Angle: In the strongest methane bands, Saturn is some 100 times fainter than the rings at opposition. Scattered light from the rings will somewhat compromise the observations. Because the rings show a strong opposition effect, the problem of scattered light decreases at phase angles well away from zero. We prefer the observations being scheduled at a phase angle of more than 5.5 degrees. This constraint only excludes a few days in February and June which otherwise would have been possible. This constraint is not essential and may be dropped. Split orbit: Saturn rotates once in 10 hours. During 96 minutes, features move a significant part over the disk. If the visit were scheduled during the South Antlantic Anomaly and split onto two successive orbits with roughly half the exposures in each orbit, center-to-limb variation for discrete features could be measured. This would significantly enhance the scientific return.
