Abstract Using NIC2 we will obtain deep images of 20 high--z damped Ly- alpha galaxies at 1.86, as close as 0.4" (~ 1.5 h^-1 kpc) to the quasar line of sight. The damped Ly-alpha (DLA) galaxies contain nearly all the neutral gas in the Universe, so at high redshift they are the reservoirs from which today's stars formed. However the quasar absorption--line studies do not provide their sizes or morphologies, so they could be large e.g. the disks of today's spiral galaxies already formed, or small e.g. more numerous proto--galactic subunits. Deep imaging can resolve this issue, and HST is required because the galaxies are very faint m_V~ 26, m_H~ 23, and lie typically within 1" of the quasar. Our current program of STIS imaging will measure impact parameters, UV continuum sizes, and star--formation rates of a sample of high--z DLA galaxies. With NICMOS we will extend this study to the near--IR with deep H--band images of 20 DLA galaxies. These observations will provide the crucial rest-- frame UV--optical colors and optical sizes and morphologies, vital for quantifying the effects of dust, and measuring ages and stellar masses. The HST imaging together with ground-- based spectroscopy will unify absorption--line studies and faint galaxy imaging studies, providing a comprehensive picture of the history of assembly, star formation, gas consumption, and chemical enrichment in the DLA galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7824( 5) - 08/05/98 09:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ To reach H=23.5 at S/N=6 we will use NIC2, spending three orbits on each target with each orbit split into two exposures to provide 6 dithered pointings in all -- as dithering appears to be highly desirable. The observational procedure and integration times were arrived at based on the latest NICMOS observations and following discussions with the NICMOS team. We require small pixels so that the psf is well sampled, so that the quasar image may be subtracted reliably. This rules out the use of NIC3. NIC1 is also unsuitable, even with the F140W filter, because of the severe read--out--noise penalty of the smaller pixels. In any case NIC2 is preferred because of the larger field of view, allowing dithering. For the magnitudes of our quasars the coronograph offers no great advantage. We have used ETC to compute the S/N and assumed NREAD=1. Using Tiny Tim to create psfs we find that for a point source 60 percent of the light is contained within a radius of 2 pix. We suppose that the sources are compact, and that 40 per cent of the light is contained in this aperture. The quasars have average V=18.3, which implies H=16.4. At the target minimum impact parameter of 0.4" each pixel receives a fraction 4.5 X 10^-4 of the total quasar light. Under these assumptions, in a 2-- pix radius aperture, in 1024 secs, the object, quasar, sky, dark, and r.o.n. photon counts are 333, 3205, 1136, 1287, 9855 respectively. Therefore the S/N achieved in 6 exposures (i.e. 3 orbits) is 6.5. For comparison a 500 sec SNAP observation reaches 1.6 mag less deep.
