Abstract We have discovered a star with an optical spectrum unlike any ever observed. Deep, narrow absorption lines of non-photospheric TiO, AlO, and VO riddle the optical spectrum, and indicate a rotation temperature of ~700 K. This cold gas is well below the grain condensation temperature, and it takes an unusual circumstellar environment to retain Ti and Al in the gaseous phase. AlO and VO are sometimes seen in the photospheres of only the coldest (~3000 K) M stars, but the underlying spectrum of U Equ seems to be that of a warm mid-G star (~4800 to 5000 K). The IRAS 25/12 micron colors are consistent with optically thin dust, yet the LRS spectrum shows moderate silicate absorption which is normally associated with optically thick material. Based on the IRAS data, we suspect that the star has an edge-on disk, with extended material giving rise to optically thin emission. We recently obtained an infrared spectrum (1 to 2.4 micron) that includes prominent H2O absorption bands and shows the CO 2-0 overtone band without the bandhead structure normally present in spectra of cool stars, indicating that the material is cold. The absence of CH4 in the spectrum further indicates a low, non-photospheric density. Although there are other warm stars with edge-on disks, none has the cold molecular absorption that U Equ displays. Ground based J and K band (7") images suggest a bipolar symmetry. With NICMOS we will be able to clearly identify the nature of the circumstellar material around this unusual star. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7825( 2) - 11/17/97 09:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image the circumstellar environment of the evolved star, U Equ. We plan to image with NIC1 and NIC2. Although U Equ is faint in the V band, it is bright in the infrared (K=8.3 mag, H=10.4 mag, J=11.6 mag). We will sample the CO and H2O absoprtion bands and their nearby continuum using a number of different filters. We expect extended emission to ~2" based on our imaging in J band at Lick Observatory. Since we are looking for faint, extended emission near a bright source, we plan to take short exposures to avoid saturation, with multiple exposures to build up S/N in the extended material. The existence of H2O bands of moderate optical depth (tau ~0.4) provides a decided advantage in attempts to image circumstellar material. The H2O band at 1.15 micron is observed only in very cool stellar atmospheres and, in the case of U Equ, is most likely associated with the cool circumstellar material. The F113N filter in NICMOS falls completely within the deepest part of this band and is, therefore, ideally suited to a search for circumstellar material. By choosing a short-wavelength filter and NIC1, we will obtain the highest possible spatial resolution for our search. We will obtain 16 exposures in this filter in a spiral-dither pattern for a total of 480 sec on source. For comparison with the F113N images, we will observe an equal number of positions in the nearby continuum using the F090M filter. We also will observe in several other filters both in and out of H2O bands and the CO 2-0 overtone band. If the circumstellar material around U Equ is complex as we suspect it could be, imaging over a range of IR wavelengths will help to define the structure. Accounting for overhead time, one orbit will yield a total of 2000 sec on-source. In total, we request 1 orbit with NICMOS.
