Abstract The nearby (~200 pc) R Aqr symbiotic system is a well-known prototype for non- relativistic astrophysical jets. The R Aqr jet has been extensively observed in the ultraviolet, optical, and radio regimes, primarily by Hollis and collaborators. Infrared imaging observations have been attempted by others but have always failed because of the extremely bright Mira- like variable in the system. Hence, this jet has never been spatially observed at infrared wavelengths because it requires a coronograph with excellent rejection characteristics. R Aqr jet imagery in the ultraviolet, optical, and radio regimes indicate compact regions of gas and dust. Our IRAS data analysis suggests the system contains extended dust structure, indicating that the infrared jet signature is consistent with an ~1000 K blackbody. Jet formation mechanisms in astrophysical systems are not well understood, but proposed NICMOS coronograph observations should reveal the infrared jet in the R Aqr symbiotic system for the first time and would help confirm that the jet itself could be initiated due to accretion disk radiation pressure on dust grains. We intend to observe through a narrow band filter centered at 1.9 micron ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7828( 14) - 11/19/98 09:18 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe R Aqr with the coronograph in two separate visits. Each of the two visits will be at a different spacecraft roll angle (ORIENT) to allow for identification and removal of artifacts from the images. Besides OTA artifacts inherent in the point-spread-function and the potential for scattered light, artifacts expected in the undithered coronographic images include flat field residuals, debris on the detectors (``grot"), and small regions of higher background near the coronographic hole (``glint"). The exposures on the R Aqr jet will be obtained in one orbit at each roll angle. With R Aqr behind the coronographic hole, NICMOS can be well exposed without saturation using either MULTIACCUM or ACCUM mode exposures. We will obtain multiple images at each roll angle to improve the S/N in the final images. Because R Aqr saturates the NICMOS detectors in direct images, the normal coronographic onboard target acquisition will not work. Instead we must use a semi-real time target acquisition technique. In this well-tested technique images of R Aqr will be obtained and read down to STScI for analysis. After locating the star using centroiding algorithms for saturated images and locating the coronographic hole from lamp flats, we will uplink an offset command to the spacecraft. (Note: we will observe the star in both BRIGHTOBJ mode and standard MULTIACCUM mode to obtain both unsaturated and saturated stellar images. Centroids using both data sets and different techniques will be employed.) When R Aqr is reacquired several orbits later, it will be accurately placed behind the coronographic hole. Thus, with one orbit for target acquisition and one orbit for science exposures, each of our two visits require two orbits for a grand total of four orbits. The R Aqr Mira-like variable is very bright. For example, the normal minimum infrared magnitudes of R Aqr are: J ~ 1.16, H ~ 0.14, K ~ - 0.40, L ~ - 0.93 (Whitelock et al. 1983). This dictates that we observe through a narrow band filter to cut down the light. We choose one centered at 1.9 microns (1\\\\\\\\ R = 0.0" to 0.3" (defines the occulting hole) , R = 0.3" to 0.6" (a decreasing function from 15x to 4x rejection) , R = 0.6" to 1.4" (steady rejection at ~4x ) , R = 1.5" to 3.0" (steady rejection at ~2x ) , Thus, at least a factor of 15x rejection for the central pixels will allow us use a 0.2 second exposure for each image. We intend to take as many images as possible over an underlineentire orbit and co-add them to build up signal-to-noise for the expected weak signature of the jet. Moreover, in the first visit, we would position the jet (position angle of ~30^degrees) so that it would not coincide with the optical system obstructions (e.g. spiders).
