Abstract We will study the distribution of circumstellar dust and molecular (H_2) gas around six classical T Tauri stars (cTTS). We will probe both the near circumstellar environment (the accretion disk) as well as the environment further out where strong winds from these stars may be interacting with remnants of the cloud material from which they formed. The primary goal is to map the distribution of the molecular gas around cTTS. All our proposed targets show UV fluorescent H_2 emission (Johns--Krull et al. 1997; Valenti et al. 1997), and are therefore expected to show IR molecular hydrogen emission. These images will reveal what fraction of the H_2 emission is produced in the warm circumstellar disks surrounding young these stars. The morphology of the extended emission will constrain collimation processes that focus the outflows from these stars. Combined with our UV data, these observations will allow us to test the thermal+fluorescent excitation model of molecular hydrogen (Black & van Dishoeck 1987). These data, combined with future HST UV imaging and long-slit spectroscopy (STIS and ground--based IR) will provide very tight constraints on the physical conditions and excitation mechanisms present in the gaseous circumstellar environments of these stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7829( 2) - 11/19/97 14:57 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe each of our target stars with the NIC2 camera and coronograph, using the narrowband 2.12 Mum filter (F212N) to measure the H_2 1-0 S(1) emission. We will also observe each target in the narrow band 2.15 Mum continuum filter (F215N) so that images can be subtracted in order to isolate the H_2 emission from the dust emission. Since much of the molecular hydrogen emission may be interior to the 0.3 arcsec (~ 45 AU) of the coronagraphic mask, we will take our target aquisition exposures in the F215N filter and equal length TWO-CHOP exposures in the F212N filter after our main science exposures. These final two images will be analyzed with the target aquisition images to measure the H_2 emission centered right on the star. To increase the dynamic range of our primary science observations and ensure that we avoid saturation problems, we will observe in the MULTIACCUM mode. For the main science exposures of all our targets except HD 319139 we will observe in the TWO-CHOP mode to remove background. The relatively crowded nature of the HD 319139 field requires that we observe in the FOUR-CHOP mode. We estimate we will achieve a S/N of ~ 40 per resolution element in fields with an H_2 flux in the central 5 arcsec comparable to that measured from the ground for T Tau. In regions where the surface flux is down by a factor of 10 we will still get a S/N of ~ 5.4. Even though T Tau has been well studied from the ground (van Langevelde et al. 1994), we choose to observe it again here due to the better resolution afforded by NICMOS and the possibility to directly estimate the level of variability that might characterize the 2.12 Mum H_2 emission. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. No coordinated or directly supporting observations are required for this proposal. However, we will try to obtain simultaneous optical spectra and photometry in order to help constrain such things as the mass accretion rate onto the star at the time the observations are made. As described in the scientific justification, these observations will be used with (and will be used to plan) future observing campaigns to better understand the physics operating in the gas around the target stars. Both CMJ and JAV have successfully applied for time at the IRTF using CSHELL and at Kitt Peak using Phoenix, so we do not anticipate any difficulties obtaining the IR long slit spectra of our targets. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The program has changed slightly since only half the number of requested orbits was awarded. In addition, the realization that the central star in each image will badly saturate the detector which will produce long lasting ghost images has lead us to use the coronograph for our main science images. Therefore, background subtraction should not be compromised. We will take our target acquisition exposures in one of the two narrow band filters and add short exposures at the end of each visit in the other filter so that we can still analyze the emissio centered right on the star. None of the originally proposed science will be jeopardized except the reduction in the target list brought on by the fewer number of orbits. I have also added some parallel exposures with the NIC1 and NIC3 cameras. The primary purpose of this is to reduce cross-talk and noise in my primary scince observations as advised by Al Schultz. I have elected to expose on the sky at whatever orientation we fall for each target in narrow band filters just to see what interesting science might result from these observations.
