Abstract Over the last decade there has been considerable debate on two major issues in the low-mass star literature: (1) the effective temperature scale for M dwarfs and its relation to mass and luminosity and (2) the conversion from an absolute magnitude in some passband to a bolometric magnitude. These issues are central to the important questions in the study of low-mass stars. In particular, is the object under scrutiny a brown dwarf and what are the luminosity and mass functions for low-mass stars? In order to effectively calibrate our understanding of the lowest mass stars and to be able to reliably tackle the above questions it is vital to have a library of the highest quality infrared spectra of KNOWN-MASS, binary components and the necessity to have reliable spectra through the water vapour bands it would be extremely difficult to obtain such high-quality observations from the ground, although such observations should be straightforward from space with the NICMOS instrument on the HST. I propose that 0.8 -- 2.5 Mum spectra be taken for a target list of known- mass M dwarf binaries. This will enable the reliable calibration of the relationship between temperature, luminosity and mass down to the hydrogen- burning limit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7830( 15) - 06/02/98 12:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This program is to take high signal-to-noise observations of predominately bright objects from 0.8--2.5 Mum using the grisms G096, G141, G206. Observations with the filter F187N are also requested in order to locate each object in the field and identify each spectrum. The targets range in brightness from 0.005-10 Jy, although apart from two of the targets they are brighter than 0.1 Jy and so this program is dominated by overheads.
