Abstract We propose to obtain multi-wavelength infrared images of the old nova shells of QU Vul, QV Vul, V1974 Cyg, and V723 Cas. The angular expansion rates and spatial distribution of the ejecta in both the continuum and emission lines of ionized gas will be determined. The objectives of our observations are to utilize HST's unique angular resolution and wavelength coverage to compare current observations of the shell of these unique novae with the angular expansion rates predicted from radio, optical, and infrared measurements made in the early phases of their eruption, and to determine the ionization and density structure of the clumpy ejecta. From the flux of the free-free continuum emission shell masses will be derived. The proposed HST NICMOS observations offer the unique possibility to significantly improve our knowledge of basic physical parameters such as luminosity and shell mass and the structure of nova shells. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7831( 3) - 12/08/97 11:45 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image the shells of the four novae in both line and continuum filters using the NICMOS/NIC2 camera with a Spiral -Dither pattern (5.5" step) for background suppression and flat field generation. Due to the small angular size of the shells (<2") this observing pattern increases the net on-source integration time (as opposed to a Two-Chop pattern) by always having the souce on-chip for each science exposure (increasing the S/N). Images should be obtained in the following filters: F 187N, F190N (Paschen-Alpha), F216N, F215N (Brackett-Gamma), and F237M, F222M (CO). Unfortunately only very marginal flux information is available for the nova shells to be observed. For QU Vul Shin et al. (1997) obtained a K-band flux of 2.2 10^-4 Jy arcsec^-2. So, for principal reasons only rough estimates are possible for the calculation of the exposure time. With the above number we get by using the NICMOS Web Time Estimator for e.g. the F215 continuum filter a S/N=10 (per pixel) in about 19 minutes (MULTIACCUM). For the other filters similar numbers can be derived. For the other novae we expect a comparable shell brightness. Thus, our strategy will be to obtain one set of line and continuum images per orbit which will give us for each image a S/N around 10. For each nova we need 3 orbits, for the whole proposal a total of 12 orbits is needed. Real Time Justification ----------------------- N/A Although detailed measurement of the ejecta morphology cannot be conducted from ground-based facilities, we will continue our multiwavelength spectrophotometric observations of these novae from our University facilities, satellite platforms, and national observatory sites (NOAO and ESO).
