Abstract Until recently very little was known about the age the globular clusters of the Galactic Bulge, as a combination of crowding, differential reddening, and distance made turnoff photometry beyond the reach of ground based observations. Using WFPC2 we have been able to demonstrate that the two best resolved, least reddened, high metallicity clusters in the Galactic Bulge are at least as old as the inner halo cluster 47 Tuc. Extending the same dating procedure to other bulge clusters is now required to accurately reconstruct the star formation history of the Bulge, thus distinguishing among competing scenarios for its formation and helping to settle the issue as to whether the central or the outer regions of the Galactic Spheroid formed first. However, the differential reddening and crowding of the other members of this class are so severe as to require to combine high angular resolution and near IR sensitivity over an adequate field of view, something that only NICMOS is currently able to deliver. A sample of four clusters, selected from our systematic study of bulge clusters will be observed with NICMOS in J and H, thus determining the luminosity difference between the horizontal branch and the turnoff. This will allow relative ages to be determined for the program clusters. One bulge cluster (NGC 6528) for which we have already WFPC2 data will also be observed with NICMOS in order to ensure a link with our previous optical photometry, and connect this relative age scale to that of the halo clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7832( 4) - 03/20/98 08:33 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ To achieve the scientific goals of the proposal we intend to image the program clusters with NIC2 in MULTIACCUM mode through the F110W and F160W filters, reaching a S/N ~eq 40 for stars about 2.0 mags below the TO (from Table 1). MULTIACCUM readout mode is crucial as we have very deep exposures over fields with objects in a wide range of brightness. The NIC2 exposure time calculator indicates integrations of ~ 17 min and ~ 27 min to reach S/N = 40 in the F110W and F160W filters at J = 21.9 and H = 20.7, respectively. Both these exposures can then be accomodated within one single HST orbit. For such integrations Table 2 gives the resulting S/N ratios for stars two mags below TO. We consider that the S/N ratios that are reachable in one single orbit are satisfactory for all clusters. We estimate that only ~ 30 HB stars can be detected within a single NIC2 field. These stars will appear superimposed in the CM diagram to a comparable number red giants, thus making difficult to accurately determine the HB level. To cope with this problem we plan to observe two adjacent fields per cluster, covering the central area. The standard IRAF digiphot.apphot aperture photometry package as well as the digiphot.daophot and ROMAFOT PSF-fitting photometry packages will be used for data reductions. Ground-based V, I photometry for all the program clusters was obtained at the ESO NTT telescope, under excellent seeing conditions. In a parallel effort we are carrying out a detailed spectroscopic analysis of individual stars in all these clusters, at medium and high resolution, to get radial velocities and detailed elemental abundances. Our first results on NGC 6553 and NGC 6528 from high resolution spectroscopy show that the r-element europium is overabundant relative to iron (Eu/Fe ~ +0.3), indicating a dominant enrichment by Type II Supernovae (Barbuy et al., IAU Symp n. 189, 1997, in press).
