Abstract Extensive observations have established that binaries are twice as common amongst pre-main sequence stars than older solar neighborhood G-dwarfs. The origin of this dramatic decrease in multiplicity is not known, but disruption of multiple systems through interactions is a possible mechanism. The predicted decline in multiplicity with age should be more pronounced among low mass stars, due to their lower binding energy. We propose to test this hypothesis by conducting a J- band companion search with NICMOS1 of 35 low mass stars in the young (50-80 Myr) cluster Alpha Persei which has an age intermediate between the T Tauri stars and the solar neighborhood. Given the young age of Alpha Persei, the J-band data are capable of detecting companions with masses as low as $/sim$40 M_J, thus, the HST observations will probe the frequency of both stellar and substellar companions. Additionally, these data will place observational constraints on models of star formation and will clarify the role of companion stars in the timescale for disk dissipation. HST offers the only means of obtaining high sensitivity, high resolution images of the lower mass stars. HST images of these stars will allow us to (1) investigate the existence and the mass dependence of an evolutionary trend in the binary fraction, (2) test mass dependent predictions of binary star formation models, and (3) study the importance of companion stars in the dissipation of circumstellar disks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7833( 9) - 06/25/98 09:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Since the stars and any companions are very red, relatively short exposures (~2 min) are sufficient to detect all possible stellar companions, as well as any more massive substellar companions. Using the MULTIACCUM mode, images at a range of exposure times will be obtained in order to increase the dynamic range of the observations. The short exposure times and angular separations of <1 degree between targets will allow 4 stars to be observed each orbit for 9 orbits. During 1 of the orbits, only 3 stars will be observed With the declination of the Alpha Persei targets, the visibility period is 55 to 56 minutes. Because the range of J-H color is not large enough to discriminate between Alpha Persei members and background objects, only images through the F140W filter will be taken. The F140W filter will be used because it provides higher resolution with a minimal loss in sensitivity compared to the F160W filter. Follow-up observations at a shorter wavelength with the Planetary Camera will provide a test of membership, but the small angular separation range considered for this survey (0arcs15 - 5arcs0) lowers the probability of a chance superposition. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None The brighter, higher mass stars of Alpha Persei will be studied using high angular resolution imaging techniques from the ground to complement our proposed HST observations of the fainter, low mass members which are inaccessible to ground- based telescopes. By employing two observational techniques, we plan to construct a comprehensive study of the binary statistics of the young cluster. Observing a wide range of masses is especially important to check for a mass dependent evolution of the binary fraction and to test the predictions of several star formation models. High resolution K-band speckle images of the brightest 120 stars in Alpha Persei will be obtained with the 3m IRTF begining in October 1997. The short exposures required for this technique, combined with the readnoise of the infrared array, restrict the speckle observations to stars with apparent K magnitudes brighter than approximately 10 mag. The HST provides the only means of obtaining images of the lower mass stars which match the spatial resolution and sensitivity of the speckle images of higher mass stars. All of these observations, ground-based speckle and the proposed HST images, will form the data set for my thesis project, a survey of young clusters designed to identify binary stars and to examine their properties as a function of age.
