Abstract Very young late-type dwarfs at distances closer than 30 pc are excellent sites to provide a direct detection of extrasolar planets. The combination of youth and proximity makes feasible the detection of giant planets of 1-5 Jovian masses orbiting at several astronomical units from the star. According to current models, giant planets with masses 1 to 5 M_Jup and age of 100 Myr may have absolute magnitudes M_J, M_H ~ 19--24, much brighter (by ~ 5-10 mags) than at the age of the Sun. Such short ages, therefore, substantially increase their detectability. We propose to use the NICMOS coronagraph to search for substellar objects around six stars with likely ages of ~100 Myr or younger which are located within 30 pc of the Sun. Companions with DeltaH=10-13 mag can be detected at angular separations as close as 0.5 arcsecs, implying in the case of our two nearest stars physical separations of 4-5 AU. Much fainter ones can be detected at larger separations. Our choice of NICMOS filters will provide key information on the surface temperature of any detected substellar object. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7834( 6) - 03/11/98 11:35 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We are proposing the use of NICMOS Camera 2 in Multiple-Accumulate Mode and the Coronagraph with filters F110W, F160W, F180M, and F207M for the search of extrasolar giant planets orbiting 6 nearby young late-type stars. We will use two orbits per object (a total of 12 orbits), being one orbit per visit. Observations during the second visit to the target will be taken at a different roll angle by at least +/- 45 degrees, to facilitate identification and removal of artifacts from images. For 3 stars in our sample, those with the largest proper motions, we request the second visit to take place at least 3 months after the first visit, which allows a proper motion measurement of any faint companion, crucial to confirm it as physically bounded to the primary. At a given visit the total integration times per filter are ~ 250s for F110W, ~ 450s for F160W, and ~ 610-760 and 600-700s for F180M and F207M, respectively. According to the Exposure Time Calculator they yield a SNR of ~ 10 for very cool objects with J=22, H=22 and K~20. For the reddest filter we will expose in an empty region (20 arc seconds away from the target) for background substraction. The use of the 4 filters will provide color information which can be compared with model atmospheres in order to learn about the nature of the companions. The targets will be acquired using the NIC2-ACQ aperture and the narrow band filter F187N with typical exposure times of 0.23-0.33s, depending of the brightness of our primary stars. Since they have H magnitudes in the range 4-8, no saturation problems are expected according to the results from SMOV #7157 (draft report by Schneider et al. 1997 ).
