Abstract The discovery of a circumstellar disk orbiting Beta Pictoris as well as the discovery of other similar IR-excess Vega-like systems have provided compelling evidence that our solar system, or at least many of the processes which are thought to have created it, may be far from unique. These ~ 100-800 Myr disk systems are thought to harbor cometary and/or asteroidal planetesimals which replenish the disk material through collision processes -- under ordinary physical conditions these disks otherwise would not survive. These disks very well may represent a precursor to or a contemporary stage of planetary formation. While some tantalizing indirect evidence for the existence of at least one planet in the Beta Pic disk has recently been presented, no planetary-class objects have yet been directly imaged in a circumstellar disk. Here we propose to use HST/NICMOS with a unique observing concept in an attempt to resolve embedded superplanets for a modest-sized sample of disk systems. Direct imaging of even one such superplanet would be an important discovery for HST and could provide the first direct evidence for an evolutionary link between these disk systems and planet formation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7835( 17) - 07/31/98 08:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We could use either camera NIC1 or NIC2 for these observations. NIC2 appears to be the best choice since it has the best filter availability, the widest field of view (19.2x19.2 arcsec), and occulting capability (0."6-diameter focal-plane occulting spot; although direct imaging is a possibility for extreme saturation on the primary star). NIC1 could be used as a backup with direct imaging (only) and a more limited field of view (11x11 arcsec) using its narrowband filters. Use of the occulter will also depend on the NICMOS instrument status over time. The following 4 NIC2 filters will be used: F165M, F171M, F180M, and F207M. The F165M/F171M pair is the only one available in NICMOS that can be adequately used for methane band imaging. The F180M covers the water band absorption feature at 1.8 micron, and the F207M covers the Gl229B-like brown dwarf ``continuum'' bump around 2.1 micron (e.g., RGH96). This filterset will allow detection of companions from methane-rich and water- rich extrasolar giant planets and brown dwarfs to low-mass red stellar companions. For backup plans with NIC1, the following 4 NIC1 filters will be used: F108N, F113N, F166N, and F187N. The F113N covers the water-band absorption feature at 1.13 micron, and the F108N covers the Gl229B-like brown dwarf and low-mass M dwarf ``continuum'' bump around 1.08 micron (see RGH96). As with NIC2 above, this on/off band filter pair will allow detection of companions from extrasolar giant planets (at ~ 5+ Jupiter masses) and brown dwarfs to low-mass red stellar companions. The F166N covers Gl229B-like methane absorption while F187N covers the water absorption band around 1.8 micron. These two filters are best matched to Gl229B -like brown dwarfs (e.g., compared to F164N and F190N). The following S/N estimates assume camera NIC2 and use of the occulting spot. Our typical target visibility period will be 53 min. Assuming a 7-min initial guide star acquisition for FINE-LOCK mode, we will be left with roughly 46 min per star. In order to achieve the dynamical range required for this project, we will use MULTIACCUM STEP32 readout mode. In this mode, we will readout non-destructively the first three images at 0.3, 0.6, and 1.0s time intervals. Most of our target primary sources will not be saturated at this stage, and these pixel values can be used (at a later processing stage) to calculate fluxes (in ADU/s/pixel). We will then continue to integrate and readout at time intervals of 32s to reach our required S/N ratio. This readout method should provide the most efficient way of detecting faint sources while still allowing construction of the complete primary star psf. To further improve the spatial sampling, we will use three half-pixel dithers for each of our fields. This method will also help to cover the bad pixels and the coronagraphic hole in NIC2. Allowing for overheads for telescope motion, filter motion, and detector readout, we will then have roughly 10 min per filter. We will ensure using the above readout strategy that for our individual exposures we avoid high saturation on the psf wings of the primary star (worst case V ~ 0). The NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) yields the following S/N estimates for companions to V ~ 0 primary stars at 1" separation (a modest angular separation): for a 10-sec exposure we will achieve a S/N ~ 4, after factoring in the photon noise from the psf wings of the primary star. The net S/N for the companion will then be 4xsqrt(60)=31. The above calculation is for the F165M (brown dwarf ``continuum'' filter) and for an ~ 20 MJup companion. The lowest S/N would be obtained in the methane absorption feature (F171M) for the lowest mass brown dwarf for which we would be sensitive (about 5 MJup); this corresponding companion S/N would be roughly 10 (Burrows et al. 1997; Geballe et al. 1996, ApJ, 467, L101; NICMOS Instrument Handbook and ETC). Obviously the companion S/N ratios would improve given wider angular separations from the primary stars. Obscuration of any companions by these optically thin disks should not be an issue and has not been factored into the S/N calculations. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We request an EARLY ACQ observation of Gl229B for use in calibration and as proof of concept for our filter selection. This EARLY ACQ will only be required if not done as part of any of our other Cycle 7-NICMOS proposals (if accepted). We will request ORIENT requirements for some of our targets in order to align the disk axis along the diagonal (longest segment) of the camera. This requirement would be most necessary for NIC1 due to its limited field of view (11x11 arcsec). At this time we forsee no other requested special requirements. We have obtained supporting groundbased images for about 20 NICMOS targets at Keck I (NIRC) during Feb 1997. We used differential methane band imaging with the available NIRC filterset (using Kshort and a methane absorption filter centered around 2.3 micron). We will obtain additional groundbased supporting observations (differential methane- band imaging and possibly broadband near-IR imaging) over the next couple of years at Keck I and/or IRTF in order to have a complete groundbased supporting dataset for all of our NICMOS circumstellar disk systems. There will be no need for any coordinated observations for this proposal. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- >>>>> NEW COMMENTS as of 23 Feb 1998 <<<<< ** SPECIAL COMMENT FOR BETA PIC (HD39060) OBSERVATIONS. ** The position angle (PA) for the Beta Pic disk is 30D. This PA is defined in the usual sense, i.e., measured from North through East on the plane of the sky. The primary goal of these HST/NICMOS observations is to search for massive Jupiters (down to 5 MJup) as close to the primary star as possible and within the flattened, edge-on disk itself. Therefore it is critical to avoid superposition of the disk on the HST diffraction spikes. Since an ORIENT of 225D will put N at the top for the NICMOS cameras, an ORIENT of 225D + 30D = 255D will properly position the Beta Pic disk between the diffraction spikes. In the absence of other systematic effects, any integer multiple of 90D added or subtracted to this 255D value should have the same effect (accounting, of course, for the range of values actually accepted by the ORIENT requirement). In order to allow scheduling of the first 3-visit block of Beta Pic observations in as timely a manner as possible, an ORIENT of 255D - 180D = 75D +/- 5D has been specified as ORIENT 70D TO 80D. According to RPS2, this ORIENT constraint will force scheduling in the late-March/early-April timeframe, IF STScI is willing to allow a suitable off-nominal S/C roll. Otherwise, the next available scheduling opportunity would be for ORIENT 160D TO 170D in the late-May/early-June timeframe. ** BASIC OBSERVATIONAL PLAN. ** We have 24 TAC-allocated orbits for this GO-7835 observing program. Our plan is to spend 1 orbit (=visit) for the Gl229AB system for filter calibration for filters that do not overlap with SNAP-7420. We will then spend 9 orbits on Beta Pic, as outlined below, and 3 orbits on Zeta Lep (IRAS-excess disk calibrator), leaving 11 orbits ON HOLD for followup observations. The 11 ON HOLD orbits will later be used for one or more of the following: Beta Pic followup (giant planet/BD found?); additional IRAS-excess target calibration (Zeta Lep disk imaged?); psf/color standard star observations (TinyTim NICMOS psf models sufficient? NICMOS psf library status?); 1-orbit target acquisitions for NIC2- CORON for these bright targets (NIC2 coronagraphic acquisition flight software status?) ** 9 ORBITS FOR BETA PIC ** Our 9 orbits for Beta Pic will be divided into 3 3-orbit blocks. The first 3-orbit block is described above and must be done using a specific ORIENT range to avoid the diffraction spikes from the primary star. The 3 orbits will be as follows: 1-orbit NIC2-CORON target acq, 1 -orbit for NIC2 observations, 1 orbit for NIC1 observations. While we can dither spatially for the NIC1 observations, such dithering is not possible for NIC2-CORON. We will "dither" for NIC2-CORON and NIC1 by changing the orientation of the disk with respect to the diffraction spikes (i.e., the roll angle). This method will require 2 additional 3-orbit blocks (for 3 3-orbit blocks total): the offset orientations should be roughly 25D +/- 5D to either side of the nominal disk orientation for Beta Pic. These orientations can be achieved either by ORIENT requirements (LINKs) or, more preferably, by off- nominal S/C rolls where possible. This overall setup assumes a 1-orbit NIC2- CORON target acq will be required for each of the 3-orbit blocks. ** ADDITIONAL ORIENT REQUIREMENTS. ** Since no disk has ever been imaged for Zeta Lep and Zeta Lep has no known faint companions, no ORIENT requirements are necessary for this target, and there are no other such special requirements for this star. Gl229AB has an ORIENT requirement so that Gl229B does not fall on a diffraction spike. **** The data for Gl229AB and Zeta Lep are needed to properly reduce and calibrate the Beta Pic observations, and it is therefore requested that these data be obtained in as timely a manner as possible with respect to the Beta Pic observations. **** The PAR WITH parallel specs may not be set up properly (?) Please set these up in the same vein as has been done for Gl229AB below and for the targets in proposal 6767 (they will HAVE to be set up for Beta Pic and Zeta Lep, i.e., ALL targets). The idea is solely to eliminate the fixed pattern noise (horizontal bars) that otherwise will be present in the images. If, as I fear may be the case, *each* exposure needs to have an associated exposure-level parallel (which would involve a ludicrous amount of additional typing) let me know if STScI can't do this and I will make a best effort. Some additional filters have been added not in the Phase I proposal. These filters keep the spirit of this proposal and are not DUPs for any other proposal. If this is a problem, delete these "spurious" filters and increase exposure times to round out the orbits appropriately. Filters specifically listed in the Phase I proposal: NIC2 (F165M, F171M, F180M, F207M); NIC1 (F108N, F113N, F166N, F187N). I note that the essential methodology and explanation of filter choice is clearly noted in the Phase I proposal, so that it appears that adding a few additional filters to increase the color information for the differential imaging technique seems reasonable. Alpha Pic would be a great psf and color standard (A7 IV star near Beta Pic) for this proposal. It would be used ONLY as a calibrator. However, it was not listed in the original Phase I proposal. I hazard a guess that it would be too late to add to this program now? (it is not listed in this RPS2 submission) ***************************************--------------------------------------- UPDATE FOR SUBMISSION ON 02 MARCH 1998:--------------------------------------- *************************************** The PI could not set up parallels to eliminate the fixed pattern noise (horizontal bars) due to proposal submission time constraints. The NIC2-CORON acq orbits have been set up by the PI -- these should be checked for correctness. They were set up to the best of the PI's ability based on ISR-031 and similar proposals published on the STScI Web page. The ORIENT reqs for Beta Pic and Gl229AB are required and were specifically noted in Phase I. Some additional filters, not specifically noted in Phase I, would be of great help for this program. They greatly increase the science potential and are not DUPs for any other program. The PI will investigate this matter with STScI. Such unapproved add'l filters are not contained in this current version. NIC1 observations were noted in the Phase I proposal but not specifically on the logsheet for Phase I. These observations would also be of great use for this program. Such NIC1 observations are not contained in this current version. An add'l target, ALPHA-PIC, not noted in Phase I, would be very fruitful as a psf and COLOR standard. It is not included here. We currently have no color standards for this proposal. Due to the NIC2-CORON acq orbits required for bright targets, the number of targets has been reduced at the discretion of the PI. We would prefer more time for beta Pic, at different roll angles to eliminate systematics, but we have been told that this is too far out of line with our Phase I submission. This RPS2 submission represents our best attempt to keep in line with Phase I and eliminate target duplication problems with other programs. Specific target duplication potential problems would be for programs with PIs: Henry/Golimowski; Smith; Clampin. Any potential target DUP problems should be investigated by STScI as quickly as possible. We have requested ON HOLD orbits but have been told this would be unwise due to time constraints of NICMOS LRP implementation. No ON HOLD orbits are now listed here. It would be particularly useful if the Institute and PI could converse on science issues during the week of 02 March 1998. After this time the PI will be on travel for a period of roughly 3 weeks, during which time it is likely no further work could be done on the program by the PI and/or Co-Is. We request that STScI conduct a feasibility review of this program. Comments on the science content would certainly be appreciated. In summary: specific science issues to be resolved: NIC1 observations could be allowed? Add'l filters could be allowed? Add'l rolls for beta Pic allowable? Color standard allowable? We note the first 2 issues presumably would have no effect on the LRP. No time constraints. other than ORIENTs, are submitted for this proposal, bearing in mind the NICMOS implementation time constraints. This proposal is ready for the LRP, although it would be extremely helpful to fully resolve these last science issues as soon as possible. >>>> This proposal, assuming the acq orbits are set up properly, is a complete submission to STScI for the 24-TAC approved orbits and should be schedulable on the LRP <<<< The NIC2-CORON observations are those specifically listed in the Phase I logsheet.
