Abstract Models of the evolution of massive binaries predict that a few such objects should survive the common envelope phase and result in systems containing a compact object plus a Wolf-Rayet star (c+WR). According to these models, a vast amount of stellar material is lost during the common envelope phase prior to the c+WR phase. We propose to test these models by searching for the presence of this circumbinary material around the only known c+WR object: Cyg X-3. Since the large reddening towards Cyg X-3 prevents any investigation in the optical, deep exposures with NIC-2 and the PaAlpha narrow band filter centered on Cyg X-3 will be used to image the system at high spatial resolution. By exposing NIC-1 and NIC-3 in parallel, we will simultaneously cover spatial scales up to 100" . (Although NIC-3 will be out of focus its PaAlpha images will still be superior to ground-based images.) We have already attempted to image Cyg X-3 from the ground using adaptive optics techniques on a 4m telescope. Our exposure yielded a marginal detection of extended nebular emission. While further ground based observations will not significantly inprove upon these images, observations with NICMOS will yield much deeper images. Our goal is to obtain a clear detection of the nebular PaAlpha emission, the strength of which can be used to estimate the initial mass of the WR star; its morphology can be used to constrain models of the mass loss during the common envelope phase. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7838( 4) - 06/22/98 09:02 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We are searching for 4 types of emission: 1) nebular emission close (< 1") to Cyg X-3; 2) nebular emission in the vicinity of Cyg X-3 (~ 5"); 3) extended nebular emission in the general area of Cyg X-3; 4) continuum emission from a source closer than 0.5" to Cyg X-3. Each of these items corresponds to a possibility discussed in the science justification. We believe item #2 has the best chance for a successful detection because we think there is a good chance that the extended emission seen on our ground based image is real. Item #4 will be automatically satisfied by the planned NIC-2 exposures (see below). Item #3 can be searched for using parallel exposures of NIC-1 and NIC-3. For item \#1 it would be more advantageous to use NIC-1 for a better definition of the PSF. However, we prefer to use NIC-2 for the initial search (first visit) because that camera covers a larger area and also, the larger projected pixel size is better for detecting faint emission expected to be in the read-noise limited regime. Our plan is to get a deep exposure of Cyg X-3 region in a first visit of 3 orbits and after analysis of these images, revisit the target for an observation of 4 orbits. We anticipate that for an optimum detection of nebular emission we have to deconvolve the image and most probably, we will have to subtract a point source image of Cyg X-3. Therefore, we do not want to saturate the image of Cyg X-3. On the other hand, breaking the total exposure time into smaller units is a disadvantage because the weak emission are expected to be in the read-noise limited regime. Cyg X-3 has K~ 12. Its broad WR PaAlpha line -- actually a blend of He, ii 5-6 and 6-8 -- is twice as bright as the WR continuum and we expect a flux of 0.02 Jy (the WR line is about as broad as the F187N filter; see 3); thus a 20 min exposure is optimum. The NIC-2 image will include star Z and D (see Fig. 2), both with K~ 12 and no expected PaAlpha emission. Thus these stars will not be saturated, and we can use their images for the definition of the PSF. 1st visit - orbit-1:NIC-2 (parallel NIC-1& 3) 2 * 20 min F187N (all 3 cameras) orbit-2:NIC-2 (parallel NIC-1& 3) 4 * 10 min F190N orbit-3:NIC-2 (parallel NIC-1& 3) 2 * 20 min F187N The continuum exposure in F190N is necessary to discriminate unresolved nebular knots from stellar objects. In the direction of this highly obscured region there is the possibility of diffuse dust emission (scattered light). The F190N exposure will also allow to correct for this contamination. We plan four F187N exposures of 20 min in order to have an improved image quality with a dithered image. The centers of the parallel exposures by NIC-1 and 3 are offset by 32arcs6 and 80arcs4. Thus, with NIC-3 we cover distances up to 100"\ from Cyg X-3. Even though NIC-3 is out of focus we still have the advantage of observing in the light of PaAlpha and the low background. Thus, the NIC-3 images will be substantially better at detecting extended nebular emission than anything possible from the ground. The second visit should be scheduled at least 3 months later than the first. This will allow us to analyze the images of the first visit and to optimize the scientific return of the second visit. We intend to obtain information on the excitation condition of the nebula and its spatial distribution by observing in the Hei, Feii, and Siii bands. We also plan to cover one orbital period in PaAlpha in order to search for a variation in the flux induced by the 4.8 h period of the ionizing X-ray flux (the ``lighthouse'' effect). The use of NIC-1 is dictated by the availability of the filters. However, the higher sampling of the PSF by NIC-1 is an advantage in case we detect structure on a scale <1" in the close vicinity of Cyg X-3. 2nd visit - orbit-1:NIC-1 (parallel NIC-2& 3) 20 min F164N; 20 min F187N orbit- 2:NIC-1 (parallel NIC-2& 3) 20 min F187N; 20 min F108N orbit-3:NIC-1 (parallel NIC-2& 3) 20 min F187N; 20 min F095N orbit-4:NIC-1 (parallel NIC-2& 3) 20 min F187N; 20 min F097N An alternative plan for visit 2 is to map emission more extended than the coverage of the detectors or to concentrate with un-degraded spatial resolution on structure detected by NICMOS-3.
