Abstract The origin of the rich variety of morphologies observed in planetary nebulae (PN) is one of the major unsolved problems in stellar evolution. While major progress has been made on the shaping of PN by the interacting winds theory, the cause of the asymmetry is not understood. Observations of proto- planetary nebulae (PPN) may hold the key to this problem. By studying the shapes of PPN, we can determine the extent of shaping in this early phase of evolution. In the past ten years, we have identified many new candidates of PPN, some of which have been found to have bipolar morphologies based on our previous ground-based (CHFT) and HST WFPC2 observations. In this proposal, we wish to obtain high resolution H and K band images of these bipolar nebulae to reveal their inner and outer (halo) structures in greater detail, and to use polarimetry to determine the distribution of dust grains and to reveal the location of the central stars. Some of the objects show great resemblance to the Egg Nebula, which has recently been observed by NICMOS to have a remarkable cross- like pattern of molecular H_2 knots. We propose to obtain an H_2 image for 3 PPN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7840( 6) - 10/05/98 16:28 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to use the NICMOS Camera 2 in the wide H band (F160W), medium K band (F222M) and the K polarimetric filters (P0L, P120L, and P240L) to obtain images of 7 PPN found to be bipolar by previous HST WFPC2 observations. We also propose to image 3 sources in H_2 (F212N) and adjacent continuum (F215N). The MULTIACCUM mode will be used to serve the purposes of removing cosmic rays, repairing possible saturated pixels in the central disk, and enhancing the dynamic range. We have used the NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) to compute on-source exposure times for each object based on the sizes and the magnitudes measured from the ground. We hope to image extended, low surface brightness regions of these nebulae (which may only be 5-10\ in the continuum filters. The expected brightness contrast between the reddest disk and the bluest lobes can be large, and we would like to obtain images of as high dynamic range as possible. Our S/N estimates for the K band filter include overhead time for background subtraction. However, for the H band filter we believe that the background emission will be neglible and can be ignored. For the H_2 observations we expect that subtracting the narrowband continuum from the line observations will also subtract the background quite effectively; hence additional time for background subtraction is not included in our estimates. For the 2Mum polarimetry we are primarily interested in the polarization field closer in to the central star (i.e. regions of high surface brightness). Based on previous NICMOS results (The Egg Nebula; Sahai et al. 1987), we believe the telescope and sky background levels will be significantly lower than the source emission in these regions and can therefore, safely be neglected. Our time estimates presented below take into account the degradation in S/N as a result of continuum subtraction (for H_2) and background subtraction (for F222M). 4-position dithering mode will be used in all observations. Take as an example IRAS17150-3224, which is a bipolar nebula with arc-structure in both polar lobes. The source has the surface brightness of 5.94 * 10^-4 Jy/arcsec^2 in H band and 7.42 * 10^-4 Jy/arcsec^2 in K band. An exposure of 800 seconds with F160W filter will achieve S/N = 75; and an exposure of 3600 sec (30 min ON + 30 min OFF) with F222M filter will achieve S/N = 50. The total time needed for the H and K filters is therefore 4400 sec, or 1.5 orbits including overheads. For each of polarimetric filters (P0L, P120L, and P240L), a S/N ~ 45 can be obtained in 1500 sec, or a total of 1.5 orbits. In addition, we propose to obtain images of 17150-3224 in F212N (molecular hydrogen line) and F215N (adjacent continuum). IRAS17150-3224 has 4.18 * 10^-6 Jy/pix^2 in the continuum. Assuming a line surface brightness of 5.0 times10^-15 erg/cm^2 sec arcsec^2, an exposure of 1200 seconds will achieve S/N = 23 including the overhead in the continuum plus line image. After the continuum, which is taken with the same exposure time as the line filter, has been subtracted, we can get a S/N ~ 5 in the continuum-subtracted image. In total, 2 orbits are required For IRAS17441-2411, exposure times of 800 sec and 3600 sec (30 min on + 30 min off) in F160W and F222M filters respectively will achieve S/N of 100, requring a total 1.5 orbits. For P0L, P120L and P240L, we can obtain S/N = 82 in 1500 sec each, or a total of 1.5 orbits to observe all 3 filters. For IRAS16594-4656, one orbit can complete H (400 sec) and K band (1000 sec x 2) imaging with S/N ~ 150 and 170 respectively including overhead. The fainter structure, which has a flux ratio of 0.04 of the averaged surface brightness, can also be observed. One orbit can complete the three polarimetric filters (900 sec in each of P0L, P120L, and P240L) with a S/N ~ 135, giving a total of 2 orbits for this object. Similarly, for IRAS17245-3951, one orbit can complete H (500 sec) and K band (100 sec x 2) imaging with a S/N = 140 and 140 respectively. Again, the fainter structure, which has a flux ratio of 0.07 of the averaged surface brightness, can be detected. A S/N of 100 can be achieved in 900 sec observations in each of the polarimetric filters, requiring another 1 orbit. For Hen 401, we calculate 9e-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 in the H_2 line, or S/N ~ 13 in 1800s in F212N and 1800s in F215N. Therefore H_2 line and continuum can be done within 1 orbit. For the broad--band continuum: we estimate a S/N ratio of ~ 200 in 900s integration time in the F160W filter, and a S/N ~ 90 in 1800 sec (15 min ON + 15 min OFF) in F222M. For each of the 3 polarization filters: we expect to achieve a S/N ~ 130 in 1200 sec per filter. The broad--band continuum and polarization filters together require 105 minutes of integration time. Including some overhead, this means 2 orbits for the continuum and polarization observations. Therefore we request a total of 3 orbits to complete observations of Hen 401. For Roberts 22 we estimate that we will achieve a S/N ratio of ~ 8, in 1800 sec in the H_2 line and the same time in the adjacent continuum. Therefore 1 orbit needs to be dedicated to imaging in H_2. The H band continuum observations will yield a S/N ratio of ~ 400 in 600 sec integration time and a S/N of 250 in 1200 sec (10 min ON + 10 min OFF) in the K band. Such high peak S/N ratios will ensure that we obtain useful information on the fainter, more extended nebulosity, that surrounds the bright core. Thus about 30 minutes will be used for the continuum observations. The remainder of the orbit can be used with the polarizers. 10 minutes per polarizer will yield a S/N of ~ 300 in each of the three filters. Thus we expect to complete both continuum and polarization observations with high S/N in 1 complete orbit, even if actual integration times are reduced somewhat to allow for overhead. For the Boomerang Nebula, we expect to achieve a S/N ratio of 250 in 900 sec integration time in the H band continuum filter (F160W) and a S/N of 150 in 1800 sec (15 min ON + 15 min OFF) integration time in the K band (F222M) filter. We expect to get a S/N ratio of about 190 in 1200 sec integration for each of the 3 polarizers. Thus, including time for overhead, we expect to complete our observations of this source in 2 orbits. vspace0.2in Real Time Justification ----------------------- Kwok and Hrivnak have been active in the search and identification of PPN since the early 1980s and have been widely credited as having pioneered the field of PPN research. Starting from a list of cool IRAS sources, we have identified over 30 new PPN candidates and have obtained optical, infrared, and millimetre- wave photometry and spectroscopic measurements using a variety of telescopes (CFHT, KPNO, CTIO, JCMT, UKIRT, etc) (cf Kwok 1993, Hrivnak 1995). In Cycle 6, we have imaged a number of these PPN candidates with WFPC2 and have successfully revealed bipolar structures of a number of PPN. Sahai has been carrying out an extensive multi-wavelength program of studying PPN and PN. An extensive program of millimeter and submillimeter-wave molecular line observations has been underway using the Swedish-ESO-Submillimeter-Telescope (e.g. Sahai et al. 1991, 1994) to study the cold dense progenitor AGB envelopes in these objects. Long-slit imaging spectroscopy of the 2Mum molecular hydrogen lines is being conducted at the IRTF. We are using JPL's mid-IR camera MIRLIN, on the Palomar 5-m to image the dust continuum in VLE-PNe at mid-infrared wavelengths. The UNSWIRF Fabry-Perot imaging camera is being used on the AAT to carry out a program of near-IR velocity- resolved imaging of PPN and PN to study the kinematics of shocked gas in these objects. Observations of PPN and PN using the WFPC2 and NICMOS instruments on HST are also being carried out (Sahai et al. 1997, 1998, Bujarrabal et al 1998). We also have eight approved experiments on ISO to do infrared spectroscopy of PPN and PN. Since PPN emit a significant fraction of their energy in the infrared, ISO spectroscopy will determine the infrared continuum and the presence of dust features, therefore providing useful complementary data to the imaging data from HST that we are proposing. On the modelling side, our group has developed one of the most sophisticated 2-D dust transfer codes which can model not only dust emission by scattered light by dust in the visible and near IR.
