Abstract We propose to image the densest parts of the nearest young cluster, in the L1688 dark cloud in Ophiuchus, using the NIC 3 camera on HST at J and H. The L1688 cluster is unique in its proximity to Earth, only 125 pc away; and in its high proportion of optically invisible protostars. When observed with the superior HST/NIC 3 resolution (0arcs25 or 30 AU) and sensitivity (J_ max = 22.5, H_ max = 21.6), we believe this cluster will provide three ``firsts" at once -- the first image of a cluster of protostars, the first population of protobinaries, and the first population of protostellar disks, resolved by their scattered starlight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7841( 4) - 03/12/98 11:48 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ HC: updated on 12/8/97 We use NIC3 to image the central regions of L1688 Cluster in a total of 13 fields. To avoid the SAA complications, the 13 orbits are grouped into three visits which can be executed individually. Each field is imaged in 1 orbit through both F110W and F160W. Each field is mapped in a 3x3 spiral-dither-chop mode, starting from the field center with a 48" dither. Since NIC3 has a FOV of 51", there are 3" overlaps around the frames. To eliminate the effect of the bad pixels, we obtain two images at each position with a 3" chopping offset. Due to the difficulty in finding guide stars in these regions, we will use GYRO mode for telescope tracking. In this mode, HST will slew to our norminal center without target aquisition (a saving of 6min per orbit). Although this could cause ~5arcsec random position errors, we should have enough stars from each map to register images. There will also be a <1/3 pixel drift during each exposure (40s and 32s), assuming a drift speed of 1.4 milliarcsec/sec. This drift is much smaller than the psf we will have. We use STEP8 MULTIACCUM for readout. This mode reads out images non-destructively at time intervals of 0.3,0.6,1.0, 2.0,4.0,8.0,16.0s and then in increments of 8s. We currently set exposure time to be 2x40s for F110W and 2x32s for F160W per position, yielding a 10 Sigma per pixel point source sensitivities of J = 22.6 and H = 21.4. We do not specify the spacecraft orients at which the observations should be carried out. As a result, the target should be observable from mid-Jan. through mid-Oct. of 1998. We do not have NIC1 and NIC2 parallels since they would produce too many data dumps within useable time, making it impossible to reach the expect sensitivities. Our experiences have shown that the readout interference would increase the background noise by just a few ADU, not a siginificant effect for this project. We do not need separate background measurements, since the wavelength regime of interest (1-1.6um) has little thermal emisison. Calibration images (dark fields, flat fields, and photometry standards) will be provided by STSCI. Although NIC 3 is not at optimal focus, its current point source FWHM of 0"25 is quite adequate for our scientific objectives. This program is ready for execution now.
