Abstract We propose to use Camera 3 of NICMOS in order to study the distribution of molecular hydrogen in the circumnuclear ring that engulfs the inner 2 parsecs of the Galaxy. These observations will be combined with approved Cycle 7 FeII line observations of a similar region using the same camera to address the roles played by UV and shock excitation of the gas. The H_2 observations will provide a direct measure of the degree of clumpiness within the ring. The proposed observations will be able to resolve the individual clumps and will have powerful implications in our understanding of the sources of outflow, dynamics and formation of the ring within the inner two parsecs of the Galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7844( 9) - 05/22/98 09:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We intend to image the inner 3'*3' (Alpha*Delta) of the Galactic center in emission principally in the 2.12Mum 1-0 H2 S(1). The FeII line observations with the camera 3 has already been approved as part of another program in Cycle 6 (proposal 7320; J. Haller who is replaced by S. Stolovy, Yusef-Zadeh and Melia). The proposed filters F212N and F215N of NICMOS camera 3 with pixel size 0.2" will cover a region of 51''. This setting will cover H2 continuum at 2.15Mum and the 1-0 S(0) of H2 line at 2.121Mum. The transmission of Br Gamma line is about 0.01% for the camera 3 H2 filter, thus the leakage is minimal when the same filter is used to subtract off the background. The SW of the ring has the highest surface brightness in H_2 line. A typically bright feature to the NE has H2 line flux 2.0times10^-18 W m^-2 arcsec^2. This estimate is based on AAT observations as seen in Figure 1 (Burton and Allen 1992). From the estimated contrast in H_2, we desire a signal to noise of about 15:1 on this surface brightness level to exploit the full information content. The WWW NICMOS simulator requires a total integration of 1500 seconds. An equal time needs to be devoted to the continuum image using F215N in order to remove the confusing sources and background. We would place these frames to include the possibly shock excited feature observed in the 34.8Mum SiII line 85" N of the Galactic center down to the southern part of the ring as well as Sgr A East, covering roughly 3'*3' of the Galactic center. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We do NOT require this proposal to execute during a camera 3 campaign, but of course, it is desireable to observe the Galactic Center with the highest spatial resolution possible. **As of 2/98,*** we have changed the orientation from 90 degrees to 270 in order to enable earlier scheduling so that the NICMOS data will be obtained before a related ground-based spectroscopic run. In order to maintain the original pointing and dither strategy, we are using a pattern- orient of 225. ***As of 5/13/98*** This proposal was scheduled to execute on May 10 and 11, 1998, however, NICMOS went into safe mode at this time (possibly as a result of a cosmic ray hit) and the proposal (visits 1 and 2) did not execute. 7844 is being resubmitted with an orient of 90 instead of 270, to be executed in late June-early August. For an orient of 90, the dithers go SE, SW, and NW. This is the same dither strategy as the (most recent) 2/98 proposal with an orient of 270 and a pattern orient of 225. I'm leaving the pattern orient parameter in for simplicity. Below is the new proposal, with visits 1 and 2 renumbered 51 and 52 at the request of the PC. I have not included the original visits here. We require that both orbits have the same orientation, thus the SAME ORIENT command in visit 52. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- We have added parallels in cameras 1 and 2 in order to image diffuse line emission in FeII and Pa alpha (basically, this is a detection experiment) as well as to minimize the "bars" that appear in the dark current.
