Abstract We have identified what may be a low luminosity companion to the closest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri (dist. ~1.3 pc). The candidate companion was discovered during Cycle 6 using the FOS as a coronagraphic camera (Program ID: 6059). The candidate companion is within ~0.4"\ of Proxima Cen, too close to be detected with WFPC2. It's apparent motion on the sky is similar to the parallactic motion of Proxima Cen, which makes its effect upon Proxima Cen difficult to detect with FGS astrometry. If the candidate companion is in orbit about Proxima Cen, modeling indicates the orbital period would be ~1 year. The ideal time to image the companion is during the latter half of the year (September-December) when it is farthest from Proxima Cen. We propose HST NICMOS camera 1 observations to confirm the companion, determine IR magnitudes, and to constrain orbital elements. Due to the small spatial separation and large magnitude differences, direct image detection of the companion cannot be done from the ground. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7847( 4) - 12/31/97 09:34 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We request NICMOS NIC1 imaging of the nearby star Proxima Cen and Ross 248 as a PSF comparsion star. The stars will be observed with the F160W, F165M, and F170M filters in MULTIACCUM mode. The F160W filter was chosen to sample the near-IR spectrum of Proxima Cen and the suspected companion in the spectral cross over region where the flux from the star is decreasing while the flux from the companion is increasing. Hopefully, this will reduce the difference in magnitude between the M5 star and the suspected companion. We plan to use POS TARGs to define a a 2x2 dithering pattern. We expect to find the companion in the wings of the PSF, not at a large separation from Proxima Cen. We will saturated the images of Proxima Cen to beable to detect the companion. Persistence images (residual charge) of Proxima Cen will be a problem. We need to readout the detector to flush out residual charge between each filter image. Existing dither patterns do not allow readouts between dither step positions. Nor, do they allow obtaining different filter observations at each dither step. The 2x2 dithering patter is needed to fully sample the wings of the PSF, to minimize ``banding'' in the reconstructed image, and to be able to remove the effects of ``grot'' from the image. The best way to remove the effects of ``grot'' from NICMOS images is to combine many images with the object of interest positioned at different locations on the detector. A separation of 0.4" (10 pixels) will place the companion on the second diffraction ring of the Proxima Cen PSF. The Proxima Cen PSF will be removed by ratioing with a comparison star (Ross 248). We have asked for one orbit to obtain images of Ross 248 as calibration for PSF subtraction. Proxima Cen is in the Milky Way and near-IR imaging of this region of the sky will yield many background objects. Due to proper motion, Proxima Cen will move relative to the more distant background stars which will remain fixed. We request three visits to Proxima Cen, with the first visit scheduled as soon as possible during 1998. The next two visits to Proxima Cen will be on hold until the first image have been obtained, reduced, and analyzed and should be scheduled in the September- December 1998 time frame. The two visits on hold should be separated by ~100 days to allow confirmation of a proper motion companion. If possible, we request the observations of Ross 248 be scheduled close in time to visit 1 to Proxima Cen. NIC2,NIC3 parallel darks will be obtaned at each dither position to reduce the effects of "bars". Four point dither usining POS TARGs to allow ACCUM persistance abatement before each MULTIACCUM. Each offset in X/Y is 40.5 pixels, which is 5 Airy ring separation (overlap) in longest filter. We want 0.5 pixel fractional offsets in X/Y for PSF resampling. Plate scale asumed: 0.0432"/pixel (average X/Y). Displacement from point to point (along X/Y) is: 1.7496". We want to offset the pattern onto a location onthe detector which has relatively shallow QE gradients. This will be *TBD* pixels. [NOTE: for the moment the POS TARGS start the pattern at the array center, this will be updated). Total Primary Orbits: 4 Real Time Justification ----------------------- The best time to observe Proxima Cen is the latter portion of the year, September-December. We base this on the 13-Oct- 1996 FOS coronagraphic image of Proxima Cen when the suspected companion was farthest from the occulting bar. Depending upon the predicted roll of HST during the September -December time frame, we may need an orient requirement to avoid diffraction spikes. NICMOS detectors retain an image of a bright source following over-exposures. This characteristic of the detectors has been labeled ``persistence''. Due to the expected saturation of the NIC1 detector while imaging Proxima Cen, persistence images will be a problem. We need to read out the NIC1 array between each filter observation. The simplest method to remove the persistence images is to obtain a dark ACCUM, reading out the detector multiple times. Since dark ACCUMs are approved only for engineering programs, we request a series of dark ACCUMs during our observations of Proxima Cen.
