Abstract Ground and space based observations over the last years have revealed a complex structure in the jet in 3C 273. The optically faint compact radio hot spot, the optically quiet radio lobe/halo and the low brightness level in the inner part of the jet are morphological features not yet understood in terms of our standard picture of extragalactic radio sources. Most puzzling is the fact that we have to invoke particle acceleration all over the jet and not only in the strong hot spot or compact knots. This is due to the short life time of optically radiating relativistic particles. As we know from our ground-based infrared imaging that the jet's spatially resolved synchrotron continua show a strong turnover in the infrared, it is infrared photometry which gives the most stringent constraints on the continuum shape and thus the particle acceleration mechanism(s) at work. We propose to obtain a deep infrared image (F160W) to construct the synchrotron continua at 0sec point15 resolution from our HST and new VLA images. This map will allow a detailed analysis of the synchrotron continua and especially a comparison between the knot and inter-knot regions. As the cut-off frequency is a sensitive indicator of changes in the maximum energy the radiating particles acquired, a detailed map of the turnover frequency will point to places where the efficiency of particle acceleration mechanism deviates from its mean. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7848( 6) - 02/18/98 14:34 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ An accuracy for the spectral index on the order of 0.05 is needed to see e.g. the spectral differences between knots B23 to DH3 in the cut-off range. It is feasible to achieve such an accuracy also for the inter -knot region between the R band and the infrared. From this requirement on the error of the spectral index between F106W and F622W it follows that for F160W (F205W is inferior in the end for typical spectral indices) a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 16.6 per resolution element (0arcs15 diameter = 4 pixels in Camera 2) is needed. A typical flux in the inter- knot region is given by knot B1, which in K' has 5 microJy in a beam of 1.3" FWHM diameter. For a typical spectral index of -1.6 we calculate a flux in F160W of 2.9 microJy/square arcsec and derive an exposure time by means of the exposure time calculator of 36.8 ksec. For astrometric purposes we will also obtain a short exposure in each visit (not to saturate the quasar nucleus). With a useful time of about 42 min per orbit, these exposures require a total of 15 orbits which could be acquired in several separate visits.
