Abstract The local distance scale to galaxies is largely based on the Cepheid period- luminosity relation. Motivated by the goal of measuring an accurate value of the Hubble constant, HST has been used successfully to discover scores of Cepheid variables in each of about 20 galaxies. However, several studies have recently suggested that a large systematic error remains in these distances, and that the distance scale based upon them is in doubt. The source of this error is metallicity, and estimates of its impact on the Hubble constant range from ~5 available for most Cepheids. Thus, independently correcting the Cepheids for both reddening and metallicity remains problematic, and is now very controversial. However, removal of each of these sources of systematic uncertainty can be achieved at infrared wavelengths where both atmospheric line blanketing and interstellar reddening are negligible effects. We are therefore proposing observations of the extragalactic Cepheids using the NICMOS camera at H = 1.6 Mu$m. The importance of these observations cannot be overstated: without the addition of H-band data, the influence of metallicity effects on the extragalactic distance scale will remain in dispute without any obvious resolution. In combination with the existing optical data from HST, H- band data will bring the systematic uncertainties in the Cepheid distances derived to a level below 5 determination of H_o to <10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7849( 7) - 03/02/98 12:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Integration times required range from 1 to 3 orbits, depending on the distance of the galaxy. For our total sample of 20 fields in 17 galaxies, the observing can be completed in 41 orbits. The basic plan is to use the F160W filter (~H band) and Cameras 1 and 2 in parallel mode to observe galaxy regions where large numbers of Cepheids are known. This strategy optimally exploits the combination of high spatial resolution with the necessity to maximize the field of view. Although the two cameras are not presently confocal, an intermediate focus position is being implemented for NICMOS to accommodate such observations. The loss of resolution and S/N using the intermediate focus is less than 10 is bound to improve as the two cameras slowly come back to confocality. In the F160W filter both Cameras are diffraction limited (FWHM=0.16 arcsec ~2 pixels in Camera 2). The exact observing strategy and number of orbits/galaxy is a strong function of the galaxy distance and the observed surface density of Cepheids. For instance, for the closest galaxies it will be possible within a single orbit to take short integrations (500 sec, to reach SNR = 10 for Cepheids with H~21 mag V~23.2 mag for a blackbody of 4500 K in Camera 1, and H~22 mag in Camera 2, for example); and this can be done for multiple NICMOS fields without re- acquiring guide stars. For the most distant objects three orbits will be invested on a single region in the galaxy found to have the maximum number of Cepheids within the combined field of view of the NICMOS 1 and 2 Cameras. Inspection of our HST Key Project Cepheid fields indicate that Cameras 1 and 2 can be maneuvered into positions that will image up to 8-10 Cepheids per exposure. The background, given by the combination of zodiacal light and the tail of the thermal background from the telescope, reaches its minimum value in the F160W bandpass, making this filter perfectly suited for deep photometry. Despite the added pillar of light due to the unresolved galaxy background light in our fields, we expect that our science exposures will all be read-noise dominated (R.N. simeq30e^-). The MULTIACCUM readout mode will be used for these observations because it offers the advantage of a large dynamic range, in addition to an automated cosmic-ray removal built into the calibration pipeline. Even for the most distant galaxies, where multi-orbit observations are required, each single exposure will not be longer than ~1000 seconds to ensure proper cosmic-ray removal. The appropriate MULTIACCUM STEP sequence will be employed for the observations, with multiple exposures of typical length 500 and 1,000 seconds for nearby and distant galaxies, respectively. We note that if on-orbit experience with NICMOS reveals that the MULTIACCUM MIF sequences yield a lower combined readout noise plus amplifier glow relative to the STEP sequences, we will adopt MIF512 and MIF1024 sequences for our observations. We are proposing to use a SPIRAL-DITH pattern, and 4 positions (to ``design" a square), separated by ~5 arcsec ( i.e.. less than 1/2 the size of Camera 1). The pattern will help compensate for flat-field variations, and for the presence of ``grot'' (small regions of very low QE) on the detectors. For such a dithering pattern, the slewing overhead is about 25 sec, which multiplied by the three steps needed to cover the 4 positions, gives an overhead of 75 sec. The read-out overhead for MULTIACCUM sequences is 27 sec, and there will be 4 read-outs per observations, for a total of 108 sec. The total overhead one expects in this case is: 18 sec (instrument set-up) + 108 sec (read-outs) + 75 sec (dithering maneuvers) = 3.4 min. This excludes the guide- star acquisition at the beginning of the orbit, but it is still clear that instrument-induced overheads are certainly a small fraction of the total exposure time, and should not represent a concern for this proposal. \\\\medskip par The Infrared Error Budget on Distance Moduli The uncertainty in the apparent modulus obtained by applying the Cepheid PL relation to random-phase observations can be expressed as the quadratic sum of three dominant terms: (i) the photometric uncertainties associated with the individual phase-point observations, (ii) the amplitude-induced scatter of a randomly observed Cepheid phase point about its star's time-averaged mean magnitude, and (iii) the scatter of the time-averaged magnitude of an individual Cepheid about the mean ridge line of the PL relation. We have optimized our observations such that the total error in the apparent H-band modulus (from these three identified sources) will be less than +/-0.05 mag. We are planning to obtain observations with a signal-to-noise ratio of 7:1 or better (i.e., +/-0.14 mag). This is identical to the equivalent sigmas attributable to both Cepheid amplitude and strip width. We find that all H-band Cepheid observations can be limited to 1 and 3 orbits per galaxy. (As a point of comparison, in order to discover these same Cepheids between 16 and 40 orbits (per galaxy) have already been invested as part of the H_0 Key Project and Sandage et al. programs.) The current proposal is a comparatively modest investment of observing time for a critical gain in systematic certainty. Crowding is likely be the limiting factor in stellar photometry in nearby galaxy fields. The asymptotic-giant-branch stars and even the red--giant populations will be the main contributing sources of confusion in the near- infrared. Our ground-based experience with similar observations of known Cepheids in NGC 300 suggests that we will lose no more than 10 crowding, when we pre-select our fields to include primarily those objects having no significant I- band companions within a 1-arcsec radius of the variable star. We now consider the amplitude-induced scatter: Cepheids discovered during the HST Key Project typically have V-band amplitudes of Delta V ~ 1.0 mag. For these stars amplitude-scaling relations (such as Freedman 1988, Ap.J., 326, 691) predict H-band amplitudes of Delta H < 0.33 mag. These amplitudes in turn imply an equivalent sigma with respect to mean light of sigma_ = +/- 0.095 mag per star for a single random-phase observation. Finally, we must consider the width of the PL relation: At V the full width of the time-averaged PL relation for Classical Cepheids is 1.0 mag, and this width drops to less than 0.5 mag when measured at H. Indeed, the H-band PL relation (in our ground-based LMC sample, for instance) has an observed dispersion of only +/- 0.15 mag (see Figure 1). Combining the amplitude and strip width errors in quadrature means that in order to obtain an apparent H-band distance statistically good to +/-3 Cepheids. In most Key Project target galaxies, within the footprint of one WFPC -2 field, we have 40 to 100 variables per galaxy to chose from, and usually these samples encompass the entire period range of 10 to 60 days. Extinction- induced uncertainties in the extragalactic distance scale present at the 10 uncertainties after the incorporation of H-band data. \\\\medskip The Case for HST Because of crowding, confusion, and sky background considerations the proposed near-infrared follow-up observations of even the brightest objects in this study cannot be made from the ground. Indeed, part of the early scientific justification for an infrared capability on HST was to secure the Cepheid extragalactic distance scale in the manner proposed here. We close by noting that metallicity-induced errors remain systematic and controversial. Problematic as the situation may be in the optical, recent theoretical studies, including atmospheric analyses ( e.g., Kurucz 1990), or interior solutions ( e.g., Chiosi, Wood & Capitanio, Ap.J.Suppl., 86, 541, 1993) are each in agreement on one aspect: long-wavelength (near-IR) observations of Cepheids are virtually unaffected by, and independent of, metallicity effects. Having successfully found the Cepheids and measured their periods, optical magnitudes and colors as part of the Key Project and other related programs, HST is uniquely equipped to finally determine true distances with a rapid and efficient follow-up program of targeted H-band imaging.
