Observations of SNe Ia spanning a large redshift range are key to decoupling Omega and Lambda. For Cycles 7 & 8 we proposed a measurement of Omega and Lambda with uncertainty ~11\ z~0.9 with WFPC and NICMOS; we have already embarked on this program with the Cycle 7 allocation and the results have more than met our expectations. Given the shortened lifetime of NICMOS, we are seeking orbits now for the remaining required NICMOS part of the project. NICMOS data are necessary because extinction correction, both at the SN host galaxy and foreground, is currently the largest part of the error budget. SN-host-galaxy extinction can be measured with rest-frame B-V data; at z~0.9 this requires NICMOS observations. The NICMOS observations bring uncertainties in the foreground extinction below the error budget for both z~0.9 and z~0.5. We therefore propose adding NICMOS observations to our Cycle 7 WFPC2 time for 3 additional SNe at z~0.9 (completing the original goal of 6 SNe at z~0.9) and 3 already planned SNe at z~0.5. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7850( 23) - 10/28/98 09:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Optimal Redshift Distribution for Measurement of Omega_M, Omega_Lambda, and Omega_k: To determine the cosmological parameters Omega_M, and Omega_Lambda within a fixed finite observing program it is vital to determine the optimal redshift distribution for the SNe to be studied. A wide-area detector is needed to efficiently discover a large number of SNe; the product of falling CCD sensitivity, increasing sky brightness due to OH airglow, and the k-correction of SNe Ia spectra makes searches most effective for z < 1. Our simulations show that the best results are obtained for equal numbers of SNe in two redshift ``bins'' at z~0.5 and z~0.9, with each set of SNe having similar uncertainties in magnitude. This is preferable to having a set of SNe distributed over the range 0.5< z < 0.9, which would reduce the redshift ``lever arm.'' Three well- separated redshifts, e.g. z < 0.1, z ~ 0.5, and z ~ 0.9, are optimal given SNe discoveries constrained to z < 1. Our search strategy targets these intermediate- and high--z SNe. Six SNe at each redshift is a minimal number for a statistical sample that allows the identification of outliers. In addition to measuring the cosmological parameters independently, the high--z SNe peak magnitudes can better determine Omega_M and Omega_Lambda for the case of a flat universe. The uncertainty in Omega_M and Omega_Lambda decreases at higher z for a given uncertainty in magnitude (e.g. for Omega_Lambda=0, Delta Omega_M ~ 2 Delta m / z), so the high--z SNe are extremely useful for this measurement. Optimal Sampling of the Lightcurves: We plan to observe the 6 SNe with NICMOS at five epochs soon after discovery. For the z~ 0.5 SNe the observations will each be separated from the next by 7+/-1 days, and for the z~0.9 SNe we will increase the separation to 9+/-1 days to account for the increased time- dilation of the light-curve at these redshifts. After the SNe have faded, observations will be made of their host galaxies. We have run extensive Monte Carlo tests of this sampling strategy on sample light curves (randomized with respect to discovery date) and found this timing to be close to optimal for a given amount of observing time. In particular if follow-up commences within seven days of discovery, observations evenly distributed over the ~ 35 day period (~20 days in the SN rest frame) are optimal to parameterize the light curve. Four photometry points sampled over the peak of the light curve are the bare minimum needed to use the SNe for cosmological measurements, because three data points determine the peak and four data points determine the width of the light curve. For this definitive measurement of SN light curves at the HST, it would be optimal to use five data points over the light curve peak, since this sampling improves the measurement for the slightly earlier or later discoveries (with respect to maximum light). Choice of Filters: Our choice of filter is set by the need to obtain a large wavelength lever-arm so that extinction can be accurately determined, while confining ourselves to the rest- frame VRI spectral region for which there is extensive comparison data from nearby SNe Ia. The latter point is doubly important because it allows us to supplement the B and V templates, which are the current standard, with R and I lightcurve templates to capitalize on the smaller total extinction in the rest-frame VRI. The limited amount of rest- frame NIR lightcurve data precludes working at even longer wavelengths. A further constraint on our filter choice is that our sources are faint and therefore the use of broad filters is desirable. These needs can be satisfied quite well using filters F140W or F110W for z~0.5 SNe and filter F110W for z~0.9. The choice of the F140W filter is not independent of the choice of camera, and we discuss the influence of camera choice in the next section. Choice of Exposure and Camera: At peak we expect J~22.2 (~2\ MuJy) for SNe Ia with z~ 0.5 and J~23.1 (~1\ MuJy) for SNe Ia with z~ 0.9. Based on results obtained to date by other NICMOS observers, we have assumed a high limiting readnoise of 20 electrons in estimating exposure times. Given the reported cosmetic problems on the NICMOS array, we will break each orbit into at least three dithered exposures. With these parameters, readnoise is comparable to, or larger than, the typical SN signal in a 0.15 arcsecond aperture. Our targets are point sources, so NICMOS Camera 2 offers the best trade-off between resolution and readnoise-limited sensitivity. SNe Ia fade much less rapidly in rest-frame V than at B or U up until 40 days after peak, so a single orbit observation using NIC2+F110W will give good photometric accuracy (3--5\ spanning -10 to +30 days around peak brightness for all of our target SNe. Note that the NICMOS exposure-time calculator gives more optimistic values since it reports a lower effective readnoise, so our estimates may seem more conservative than expected. If the readnoise performance of NICMOS improves over that seen in the most recent observations, we would then prefer to use Camera 1. Camera 1 properly samples point sources in the J-band, whereas Camera 2 is undersampled. Moreover, filter F140W is available on Camera 1; this filter provides a somewhat better wavelength lever-arm for determining extinction and it has the same rest-frame spectral coverage at z~0.9 as does F110W at z~0.5 making differential color measures between our sets of intermediate- and high--z more robust. The rest-frame B-band extinction is about 1.8* the observed WFPC2+F814W minus NIC2+F110W color excess. With 3--5\ at peak brightness with ~6 datapoints should be less than 3\ error in the extinction correction of roughly 0.05 mag for rest-frame B -- well below the intrinsic dispersion in de-reddened SNe Ia peak magnitudes. By using rest-frame V, R, or I templates, the uncertainty in the extinction corrections will be further reduced since the total extinction is smaller. Galactic foreground extinction at J is 65\ will guarantee that the uncertainty in Galactic extinction corrections will be below other sources of uncertainty. Note that since the SN lightcurve is fit to a template for each bandpass, NICMOS observations do not need to be coordinated with WFPC observations to yield accurate colors (although such coordination is important for minimizing HST acquisition overhead and maximizing HST scheduling efficiency). Synopsis In summary, 7 orbits each are requested for NICMOS Camera 2 observations of three high--z (z~0.9) and three intermediate-z (z~0.5) SNe Ia in the F110W or F140W filters. This results in a total request of 42 orbits. Only NICMOS can provide the deep NIR imaging at high spatial resolution with a stable PSF needed to accurately measure intrinsic luminosities for high--z SNe and determine the cosmological parameters. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None, but we note that our search strategy guarantees the date of discovery of the SNe, their lightcurve phase, their redshift range (0.5-0.9) and even the possible sets of coordinates. Thus we can specify our observing plan well in advance of the actual discovery of the new SNe. Except for exact coordinates, we can provide the detailed observing plan as soon as the proposal is approved. Based on past results, our international campaigns should discover >40 SNe in 1998 using the CTIO 4-m telescope. By design, and as demonstrated by our most recent runs targeted for high--z SNe, at least 20\ Optical spectroscopic and photometric follow-up will be obtained at Keck, CFHT, CTIO, WIYN, WHT, ESO, and CFHT. However, only the HST can provide the precise photometry at NIR wavelengths needed to accurately determine the lightcurve shape and SN extinction independently, while minimizing the amount of host light superposed on the SN. The search technique works as follows: Just after new moon, we observe many tens of high-galactic- latitude fields (including known high- redshift clusters when possible) using a wide-field CCD array on a 4-meter class telescope (e.g., BTC on the CTIO 4-m). Each image contains thousands of galaxies at redshifts 0.5 -- 1. Just before the following new moon, we observe the same fields again. Examination of the tens of thousands of high redshift galaxies on average yields twelve SNe on the rising part of their lightcurves. Preliminary analysis of all the images is completed within hours of the observations so that follow-up photometry and spectroscopy can begin immediately. All SNe with z > 0.35 discovered with this technique have been SNe Ia, and we have followed more than 50 SNe selected from a larger pool of SNe discovered to date. Because of the scheduled nature of the SNe discoveries, HST follow-up can be scheduled in advance, as required for efficient use of HST.
