Abstract We propose deep, high resolution continuum, line and polarization imaging of the two best candidates for recent mergers amongst the low-redshift radio galaxies: 3C 305 and 3C 293. Our primary aim is to obtain a deep IR image to locate the true nuclei and clarify the structure of the galaxies in order to test merger models, since our optical view is confused by dense dust lanes, scattering, and strong emission lines associated with the kpc-scale radio jets. The results will help assess popular models in which mergers trigger AGN activity. Our secondary aim is to image the shock-excited 1.64 micron\ Fe ii line to trace fast shocks and hence help understand the relationship between the radio jets and the (possibly collimated) ionizing continuum. These two galaxies provide a very rare opportunity to study the impact of the jets on their environment, because they are interacting directly with the cold interstellar medium (absent in normal elliptical radio galaxies). The extended optical emission lines are already well studied, but interpretation has been hampered by confusion between shock- and photo-ionization. Our tertiary aim is to obtain 2 micron\ polarimetry to trace regions of electron scattering, to check the apparent 90degrees\ misalignment between the jet axis and that of the scattering ``cone'' in 3C 305, and to ensure location of even deeply-buried nuclei, either by picking up direct long- wavelength emission, or by locating the centre of the scattering pattern. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7853( 4) - 04/15/98 11:04 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose begindescription em(A) Deep imaging of the two galaxies with the F160W filter; em(B) Imaging of the Lambda1.64 Mum Fe ii line using the F171M and F180M filters for on-line and off-line respectively; em(C) 2micron\\ polarimetry using the three long-wavelength POL filters, which also gives a useful 2 micron\\ image. enddescription 3C 293 has measured H and K magnitudes of 12.08 and 11.68 respectively in a 12'' aperture (Lilly & Longair 1984). Near IR data is not available for 3C 305, but the B and V imaging by Smith & Heckman (1989) shows that the two galaxies have very similar brightness in the inner 10''. We therefore assume an average brightness of about 1* 10^-4 Janskys per square arcsecond. From the NICMOS exposure time calculator this implies that 1- orbit (~50 min) integrations will reach signal-to-noise ratios per resolution element of 49:1 (F160W). We use the NIC2 camera even though the PSF is very slightly undersampled at 1.60 Mum, to improve brightness sensitivity and field of view, and to make direct comparison between our images easier. For both targets (which differ in redshift by only 0.004), the 1.64 micron\\ line is redshifted close to the centre of F171M. We use F180M for continuum rather than our F160W image because of the strong colour gradients in the galaxies (Smith & Heckman (1989). We have estimated Fe ii intensities by scaling from NGC 1068 (Blietz et al. 1994). The HAlpha flux of our targets is 1\\ respectively of NGC 1068 (Yee & Oke 1978, Dahari & De Robertis 1988); all three have Sy 2 type spectra dominated by a narrow-line region on approximately the scale of the jets. The angular size of the bright radio components are 14\\ associated with the radio components is expected to have 30-- 50\\ surface brightness seen in NGC 1068, or roughly 9 * 10^- 18W,m^-2arcsec^-2. The NICMOS exposure time calculator shows that the line and continuum signals are in the ratio 1:1 in F171M, and the sensitivity of F180M is identical to F171M. Thus the noise in the continuum-subtracted image will be sqrt3 greater than if only the line were present; we therefore request 2 orbits in each of F171M and F180M to get 15:1 signal-to-noise. We request one orbit per target with each of POL0N, POL120N and POL240N. We expect up to 30\\ are only interested in detecting polarization in the high- intensity region of the inner 2'', where our WFPC2 photometry shows the signal is >3* the average for the inner 6'' used above. By binning pixels 2*2 we can therefore get >20:1 SNR, allowing for the lower throughput of the POL filters. The summed intensity image will give a similar SNR over the whole inner regions, without binning.
