Abstract Our proposed NICMOS observations combined with our multiwavelength observing program will finally provide us with the data we need to build a picture of how powerful radio galaxies evolve. We propose to image matched samples of compact GHz Peaked Spectrum, intermediate scale Compact Steep Spectrum and large scale classical double 3CR FR2 sources with NIC2 in the F110W ``J" and F205W ``K" filters. The J and K bands will give us a baseline in wavelength over which to determine accurate colors and which is still within the most sensitive bands in NICMOS. The 0arcs075 pixels in NIC2 will give us the needed resolution for accurate determination of stellar population color gradients and the proper isolation of the AGN colors. Model fits with stellar synthesis code will yield metallicity and ages of the underlying stellar population. The accurate determination of the nuclear near-IR flux enables us to compare the AGN output as seen by the nearby hot dust as a function of radio source size and age. The range of radio size scales in our sample corresponds to a range in radio source ages of ~ 10^4 - 10^7-8 yr. We therefore will be able to study the evolution of the AGN output relative to the total radio luminosity over the entire range of radio source ages. This is a critical constraint on the current evolution model which requires strong luminosity evolution of radio sources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7855( 5) - 04/22/98 11:28 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image each source for 1 orbit using NIC2 in MULTIACCUM mode, with the F110W (J band) and F205W (K band) filters. Including overhead (target acquisition and filter changes), this amounts to about 1000 seconds per band. The exposures per band will be split in two. Since the sources will only be a few arcsec in size, we will not need to chop off the field and can use a two position dither with an offset large enough to avoid source overlap, while still retaining the source in the field of view. This optimizes the tradeoff between S/N in the individual frames and removal of detector defects (grot) and the sky background (which is necessary at K band). Cosmic ray events and saturation will be taken care of using the MULTIACCUM mode, with a time spacing small enough to prevent saturation of the nucleus by the first read-out. However, a rapid sampling is not needed, since the contrast between nucleus and underlying galaxy is not extremely large, none of the sources harbor extremely dominant point sources (like quasars). If we assume a 2*500 s exposure per frame, the ETC yields for a source with a total K band magnitude of 16, a typical nuclear flux fraction of 50% with a source diameter of 4": F110W F205W F110W F205W S/N S/N Sat.time Sat.time ----------------------------------------- ----------------- Extended region 4 2 >10^5s 6000 s Nuclear region 300 200 2000s 2000 s For our brightest sources (K14.0), saturation of the nucleus occurs around 200s (F110W) and 400s (F205W). For our purpose a SPARS64 MULTIACCUM mode would be adequate sampling, while still keeping the data volume per frame as low as possible. Since we will be using radial averaged color profiles, the resulting S/N as a function of radial distance will be significantly higher (a factor of [3.1415*dR(2R+dR)]^0.5). The actual S/N will depend on the source profile, but a S/N of ~2 in the outer parts is more than sufficient for our purposes. In the brightest sources we may be able to test for azimuthal color gradients, especially in the sources with an alignment effect.
