Abstract The small bodies recently discovered in the outer solar system appear to be unique both in composition and diversity compared to other classes of solar system objects. Existing observations of Centaurs and Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) at visible wavelengths show a wide range of broad band colors and, in the very few cases where spectra exist, a variety of new and unidentified spectral features. This diversity, if a general characteristic of the KBOs and Centaurs, may document the collisional processing of the primitive surfaces of these objects and/or differences in the composition and formation conditions of these bodies. At present, the number of objects for which accurate infrared observations exist is too small to allow general conclusions about their surface composition to be reached. We propose here to obtain infrared spectra and spectrophotometry of a significant number of KBOs, including smaller and fainter objects that are, possibly, less dynamically altered. The sensitivity of NICMOS offers the only opportunity to measure a statistically significant number of KBOs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7858( 16) - 07/31/98 17:34 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is to obtain the highest resolution spectral information over as wide a spectral range as possible with NICMOS using the grisms, medium band filters and wide band filters. To accomplish this we have devised three separate observing sequences, one each for ``bright'' (V <= 21.5), ``moderate'' (21.5 < V <= 22.5), and ``faint'' (22.5 < V <= 24). For the four bright targets, two KBOs and two Centaurs, we will use the NIC3 grisms, G096 and G141, to obtain a complete spectrum from 0.8 - 1.9 \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\um . Integration times of 1500 and 1100 seconds can be completed in one orbit with images in F110W and F160W to identify objects in the field and to provide calibration check for the grism data. We will Real Time Justification ----------------------- There are no special requirements for this proposal. Luu and colleagues will obtain coordinated ground-based optical spectrophotometry of the targets to be observed by HST to extend the wavelength coverage down to 4000 Angstrom . Ongoing ground-based astrometric observations will be used to provide the most up-to-date ephemeris information possible for each of the targets. Except for 1996 RQ20, all targets have been observed at multiple oppositions and therefore are expected to have positional uncertainties of less than 5" . 1996 RQ20, has been observed over a 125 day arc at the time of this proposal and is fully expected to be recovered during fall 1997.
