Abstract Of the two thousand gamma-ray bursts detected in the last twenty-five years, only two have identified optical counterparts. Recent ground-based and HST observations suggest that both of these bursters lie in host galaxies with apparent magnitude \R >~ 25. Here we propose to obtain J and H band images of these objects. These observations will allow us to place constraints on the star-formation rates and redshifts of the hosts as well as on the long-term behavior of the optical transient. This information is crucial for understanding the physical nature of these extraordinary outbursts. Because of possible confusion between the optical transient and the faint underlying host galaxy, the only telescope with sufficient resolution to undertake these observations is HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7863( 14) - 09/17/98 11:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image both GRB970228 and GRB970508 using NIC2. This camera gives us the angular resolution necessary to separate the optical transient (OT) from the host galaxy, while avoiding the increase in readnoise that would result from using the finer pixelation of NIC1. GRB970228: This object has been imaged using the F814W and F606W filters on the WFPC2 PC camera, and the 50CCD clear filter on STIS. The apparent AB magnitude of the nebula, based on our STIS observation, is \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\R = 25.5. It is reasonable to assume that the object will be no bluer than a flat spectrum in f_Nu, (indeed measurements of the optical and infrared colors of faint galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field suggest that this is a quite conservative assumption). Therefore we wish to measure the color of a 0.25 MuJy galaxy with an area somewhat less than one-half square arcsec. Us ing the exposure time calculator, and a reasonable assumption of a readnoise of 20 e- (the lowest noise NICMOS images we have seen are probably those we produced of GRB970508, which had the equivalent of a 17 e - readnoise), and assuming two 1024 s MIF exposures per orbit (to allow dithering to reduce the effect of detector defects on the final results), we calculate that in 4 orbits we will obtain a signal-to-noise ratio per pixel of ~ 1.0 in both the H and J bands, for total signal-to-noise ratios in both colors of approximately 10. Of course, a redder intrinsic spectrum would produce a correspondingly greater S/N, but this calculation shows that the exposure time is reasonable and appropriate. GRB970508: As discussed in the scientific justification, ground-based observations by members of our group at the NOT telescope reveal a deviation from a power-law fall-off in the intensity of this source, suggesting the possibility of an underlying galaxy with magnitude R ~ 25.2. While we will delay these obser vations as long as possible, if th e OT continues to fall-off as the power-law, it will have a magnitude of perhaps H_AB ~ 26 (or 0.15 MuJy) at the time of the observations in mid to late 1998. This implies that a PSF subtraction will be necessary to accurately measure the color of the underlying galaxy. Again, if we assume that galaxy is flat in f_Nu (and thus is quite blue), we will require an exposure time of 4 orbits to reach an S/N of 10 - 15. Our previous NICMOS observations on this target suggest we should be able to subtract the point source (which will be fainter than the galaxy) with less than a 10\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Thus readnoise, not PSF subtraction, will be the main limitation on this observation. In order to allow time for the GRB970508 Optical Transient to fade below the expected magnitude of the host galaxy, we request that the observations of it be obtained sometime in the interv al May - August 1998, inclusive. As NICMOS will have a half-year of cryogen left after this date, we do not believe this restriction will hinder scheduling of these observations. Furthermore, RPS2 shows 4 substantial windows during this interval, based upon 30% schedulability. To minimize Zodiacal Light background during observations of the low ecliptic latitude target GRB970228, we request that they be obtained as soon after January 1, 1998 as practicable. This target enters the Solar Exclusion Zone Apr. 16, 1998 and for the preceding 1.5 months the Zodiacal Light background will be significantly increased. Therefore, the preferred interval is Jan. 1 - Mar. 1, 1998. To improve the signal to noise ratio of the images of the background- limited targets studied here, we request that the exposures be scheduled to minimize persistence of cosmic ray tracks. Large numbers of CRs are recorded by NICMOS during passage of HST through the SAA, and remnant images of those tracks persist in subsequent science images . Therefore we request that each o f the 4 visits are scheduled so that no SAA passages occur during each visit, nor in the orbit immediately preceding each visit. Revision April 21, 1998: The former Visit 3, which obtained F110W images of GRB970508, has been replaced with F160W observations of a new GRB, GRB980329. The observing strategy has been slightly modified. The MULTIACCUM exposures now use SPARS64, rather than MIF1024. This better utilizes the target orbital visibility and recent experience suggests the read noise is little different. The dither pattern is comprised of 2 parallel lines that fill a ridge of higher NICMOS sensitivity, rather than the single line previously employed. This reduces the overlap of the images of the extended host galaxy. Revision May 19, 1998: Modified Visit 4, which obtains F160W images of GRB970508. The SAMP-SEQ and the dither pattern selected for Visit 3 (described above) will now be used. A PSF star (also used in proposal 7966 for STIS observations) is also obser ved. To fit this into the allocat ed orbits the previous MIF512 exposures of GRB970508 are deleted. Finally, the scheduling together of the 7966/STIS and 7863/NICMOS observations of GRB970508 is requested.
