Abstract The underlying causes of the rapid cosmological evolution of the quasar population are a mystery around which are woven many different strands of contemporary cosmology. Progress on this problem would have important implications for understanding the early heating of the IGM, the formation and early evolution of galaxies, and of course the quasar phenomenon itself. The time is now ripe for a major attack on this problem with the HST. First, the addition of NICMOS allows us for the first time to make a rigorous differential comparison at the same rest wavelength between the host galaxies of high-z (z ~ 2) and low-z quasars. We have also carefully selected a sample of high-z radio-quiet quasars that have the same absolute magnitudes as the low-z quasar sample imaged with HST by Bahcall and collaborators. We will therefore be comparing apples to apples. More generally, our deep NICMOS images will be able to detect host galaxies having sizes and (rest- frame) optical luminosities of typical present-day (L_*) galaxies. Second, the recent discovery of a field population of high-z star-forming galaxies gives us an important benchmark to which we can compare the properties of high-z quasar hosts. NICMOS images of our sample of quasars will allow us to detect host galaxies having the sizes and luminosities of these high-z field galaxies. Our team has a combination of experience in the use of HST to study quasar hosts and a deep involvement in the characterization of NICMOS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7864( 10) - 09/01/98 16:07 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ sectionGeneral Considerations As stated above, our observational goals are to use NICMOS to: 1) Detect host galaxies having the same (rest-frame) optical luminosities and sizes as average present-day galaxies. 2) Detect host galaxies having the same luminosities and sizes as the field population of UV-dropout star-forming galaxies at comparable redshifts. We note that our targets are all at the extreme edge of the CVZ (11 to 15 total orbits per field over 12 months) and therefore we do not request using CVZ time. Our ability to detect a host galaxy depends on signal-to-noise considerations and on our ability to subtract off the light from the quasar by accurately characterizing the point-spread- function (`PSF'). After careful thought, we have decided not to use the coronograph. Using this facility would restrict our analysis of the host galaxy to radii > 0.4 arcsec. The quasars we intend to image are so faint (H ~ 19.5), that the background dominates quasar light at these radii. Moreover, either a typical present-day L_* galaxy or UV-dropout galaxy placed at z = 2 will have a surface brightness at r > 0.4 arcsec that is similar to the surface brightness of the quasar light (without the coronograph). Thus, the use of the coronograph does not significantly improve our ability to detect the host galaxy at large radii, and makes it impossible to detect the host at smaller radii. We will therefore obtain deep (6 total orbits per quasar) images without the coronographic mask. As noted above, the F165M filter is an ideal compromise between high throughput, low background, and our desires to exclude bright emission-lines from the bandpass and to match the rest-frame wavelength to the low-z quasar sample. NICMOS Camera 2 represents the best compromise in terms of sampling of the PSF (NIC2 is diffraction limited at 1.6 microns), sensitivity, and field- of-view. The goal of detecting the equivalent of a present- day L_* galaxy (i.e. a host galaxy similar to the hosts of present-day quasars) is more technically challenging than our second goal, so we will discuss its feasibility first in some detail, and then briefly discuss the detection of a host that is similar to the UV-dropout galaxies. sectionDetecting a Present-Day L_* Host Galaxy For h = 0.75, an average present- day (L_*) galaxy has an absolute V magnitude of -20.9 and a half-light radius r_e = 5 kpc. Placing such an object at z = 2 yields a total flux of 1.55 microJy at 1.65 microns and r_e = 0.7 arcsec (q_0 = 0.2). For NICMOS Camera 2 and F165M the total detection rate will then be 1.6 s^-1. A quasar with B = 22 and a typical quasar spectral energy distribution (nuP_Nu Alpha nu^0.5 between the UV and optical - cf. Elvis et al 1994, ApJS, 95, 1) will have a flux of 13 microJy at 1.65 microns or a total count rate of 13 s^-1. Within the assumed galaxy half-light radius r_e = 0.7 arcsec there are 275 pixels, so the total background plus dark count rate is 39 s^-1. The quasar light (12.4 s^-1 inside r_e) can be considered as an additional background noise term. The read-noise is 28 per pixel. For a signal of 0.8 s^-1 (inside r_e only) from the host galaxy, the total signal-to-noise summed over these 275 pixels will be 4.0 per orbit. Thus, in 6 orbits per quasar, we would obtain a total signal-to-noise of 10 inside r_e for the host galaxy. Within r_e the host would supply about 6\\\\\\\\ photons as the quasar, so we would need to be able to subtract the quasar light (characterize the PSF) at a level of better than 2\\\\\\\\ To further insure that we will be able to detect the host galaxy even in the face of uncertain PSF subtraction, we will also need to obtain adequate signal- to-noise at larger radii where the host light is as bright as the the quasar light (so that PSF subtraction need not be very accurate). For typical galaxy photometric growth-curves, the annulus between 0.6 to 1.5 r_e (0.42 to 1.05 arcsec) would contain about 50\\\\\\\\ pixels. Over this annulus, we would detect about 0.6 s^-1 from the quasar (similar to the galaxy count rate) and about 74 s^-1 from the background plus dark current. The total signal- to-noise for the host summed over this annulus would then be 3.0 per orbit. In 6 orbits per quasar, we would then obtain a signal-to-noise of 7.4. sectionDetecting a UV-Dropout Host Galaxy A typical UV- droput galaxy placed at a redshift of 1.9 would have magnitudes of V = 24 and K = 21 (M. Dickinson, private communication) and a half-light radius of r_e = 0.3 arcsec. The total flux density at 1.65 microns is 2.2 microJy, leading to a count rate of 2.2 s^-1 in the F165M filter. Within r_e = 0.3 arcsec there are 51 pixels, so the total background plus dark count rate is 7.2 s^-1. The quasar light (12 s^-1 inside r_e) is now larger than the background. The read-noise is 28 per pixel. For a signal of 1.1 s^-1 (inside r_e only) from the host galaxy, the total signal-to-noise summed over these 51 pixels will be 10.4 per orbit. Thus, in 6 orbits per quasar, we would obtain a total signal-to-noise of 25 inside r_e for the host galaxy. Within r_e the host would supply about 9\\\\\\\\ photons as the quasar, so we would need to be able to subtract the quasar light (characterize the PSF) at a level of better than 3\\\\\\\\ In the 152 pixels in the annulus from 0.3 to 0.6 arcsec (1 to 2 r_e), we would detect about as many counts from the host galaxy (0.9 s^-1) as from the quasar (1.2 s^ -1). Thus, in this annulus, the detection of the host does not critically depend on a very accurate subtraction of the quasar light. Within this annulus the count rate from the background plus dark current is 21.5 s^-1. The signal- to- noise for the host galaxy summed over the annulus is then about 6.2 per orbit, or 15.2 over 6 orbits. sectionCharacterizing the Point-Spread-Function To detect the inner parts of the host galaxies, it is vital that we accurately characterize the PSF of our observations. We are aware that the PSF changes from orbit-to-orbit due to the `breathing' of the telescope. Our extensive analysis of a library of HST PC2 images taken of star clusters (and comparison of these images to TinyTim simulations) shows that PSF variations limit the detection of `fuzz' around quasars to cases in which at least 5\\\\\\\\ the total light within a radius of about 1.5 arcsec around the quasar is due to the `fuzz'. Reaching these levels entails using a PSF measured near the same location on the detector where the quasar is imaged. With care (see below) we believe that detecting the `fuzz' under our quasars is feasible with NIC2: through the F165M filter an L_* galaxy under one of our target quasars would provide about 10\\\\\\\\ while one of the UV-dropout galaxies would provide about 16\\\\\\\\ To make the appropriate tests of the reproducibility of the PSF with NIC2 and the F165M filter, we will need a mini-library of PSF observations. The F165M filter does not have such a library, so we will use the equivalent of one orbit per quasar to obtain observations of a bright PSF star with the same camera and filter, placed at the same locations on the detector, with the same roll angle (see below), and with the exposure time chosen to deliver approximately the same total number of electrons per pixel in the star and the quasar per exposure. We will obtain more PSF star exposures than quasar exposures, and the background will be negligible in the former. Thus, the signal-to- noise in the summed PSF will be significantly better than for the quasar. We will also use the extensive library of stellar PSF's generated on a monthly basis by the Photometric Monitoring Program (7607) with the F160W filter on NIC2. These images will place a bright star at three locations on the NIC2 detector. While there will be subtle differences between the F165M and F160W PSF's, these images will be invaluable for characterizing the stability of the PSF. As a further step to minimize our sensitivity to subtle PSF problems, we will request that each 6 orbit allocation for quasar imaging be split into two segments of 3 orbits each, separated by several months. This will allow us to observe the quasar (and associated PSF star) at different telescope roll angles. Thus, we will be able to distinguish between subtle PSF features (that will roll with the telescope and stay fixed in the detector coordinate system) and actual structures in the host galaxy (which will stay fixed in the sky coordinate system). Finally, we will use a standard dither pattern in our observations, to minimize the effect of any bad pixels or residual flat-field problems that occur on intermediate spatial scales. Each observation will consist of a number of MULTIACCUM exposures of about 2, 000 sec each for effective cosmic ray removal and to exploit the large dynamic range provided by the MULTIACCUM readout mode. sectionSummary In summary, we will require 7 total orbits per quasar (including the equivalent of one orbit per quasar for the PSF star). For 5 quasars, this results in 35 total orbits. While our proposed observations are challenging, they are feasible and have a high potential scientific pay-off. We also emphasize that one of us (DC) is a NICMOS Instrument Scientist at STScI, and is deeply involved in characterizing the scientific performance of this instrument. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We plan to obtain deep optical and near-IR images of these five quasars using the facilities at the European Southern Observatory and CTIO. These images will be used to search for structures whose surface brightness is lower than can be reached in the HST images (but whose angular size is > 1 arcsec). The images would complement the HST data.
