Abstract The nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 4945 shows evidence for both a Seyfert nucleus and an outward propagating starburst. It is also characterized by a prominent cone--shaped cavity generated by a starburst driven superwind. We believe the nucleus of NGC 4945 is experiencing the earliest stage of an evolution from starburst to AGN activity, as predicted by some theories. We propose to use NICMOS broad band, PaAlpha, H_2 and FeII images to i) confirm the presence of an outward propagating burst, including a burned out nucleus and a circumnuclear ring of star formation, ii) trace the superwind evacuated cavity and the ionization cone in the close vicinity of the nucleus (where optical lines are completely obscured), iii) determine the location of the (optically hidden) AGN with respect to the nuclear star cluster and the cone- shaped cavity. Such observations will tackle the following issues: 1) the SB-->AGN evolution, 2) the connection between starburst driven superwinds and AGN light cones, and 3) the relation between SN driven cavity and AGN torii. The angular scales of these structures are below the resolution of groundbased observations and the intrinsic optical extinction is A_V ~eq 20, thus making NICMOS an optimal tool to tackle these issues. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7865( 3) - 12/17/97 10:57 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image central regions of NGC 4945 with NICMOS in the broad/medium band filters (F110W, F222M and F237M, camera 2) and the narrow band ones (F187N, F190N, F212N, F215N, cameras 1 and 2)., Ground based observations with an aperture of 6'' give J=12.6, H=10.6, K=9.3. Therefore, by using those values to estimate average surface brightnesses we will reach the following signal-to- noise ratios:, -- F110W S/N~100 in 1000 sec, -- F222M S/N~100 in 500 sec (+500s background), -- F237M S/N~100 in 500 sec (+500s background), These integrations are aimed at detecting even the faint extended structures. Taking into account the declination of the object, guide star acquisition and other instrumental overheads, about 3000s of exposure will be available each orbit. Therefore, these broad band observation will require 1 orbit. A snapshot observation with the filter F160M is already planned with HST: we will use these data once they are public. As for the emission lines, since the photon noise of the continuum will dominate, the S/N of the continuum-- subtracted line image is given by: beginequation left(\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\fracSN\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\right)_Line = frac1(square)rt2 left(\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\fracSN\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\right)_Continuum fracW_LambdaDeltaLambda endequation where W_Lambda is the equivalent width of the line and DeltaLambda is the width of the filter. By using our BrGamma map (Fig.1) we derive an equivalent width in the range 4--16 Angstrom . The PaAlpha line is about 10 times brighter than BrGamma. An integration time of 1500s in each filter (line and continuum) will achieve a S/N of 80 on the continuum (by using the average surface brightness in the central 3'' --see Fig.1-- that is the region of interest for line emission imaging), which results in a S/N of >10 for the continuum subtracted line image, for the lowest expected EW. A total of 2400s is then requested for PaAlpha imaging. The observed equivalent widths of H_2 and FeII have values similar to those of BrGamma, however such emission lines will be concentrated at the edges of the observed cone (Fig.2), in the nuclear (brightest) part of the ionization cone, and knotty emission tracing SNRs, while the continuum emission will be more diffused. Therefore, we can gain more than a factor of ten in the equivalent width at the HST resolution. As a consequence, an integration time of 1500s per filter (line and continuum) for H_2 will achieve a S/N of about 100 in the continuum which results in a S/N greater than 10 for the lowest EW structures in the continuum subtracted line image. In the case of FeII we will use an integration time twice longer because of the smaller pixel size of NIC 1. A total of 3000+6000s is then requested for H_2 and FeII imaging. When accounting for guide star reacquisition + other instrumental overheads, the narrow band images will require 1 orbit per PaAlpha, 1 for H_2 and 2 for FeII. During primary observations we will obtain parallels observations in the other NICMOS cameras with the same filters to study the circumnuclear regions. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None -- We have near--IR and optical groundbased broad and narrow band images (part of them are in Figs.1-3, others are in Moorwood & Oliva 1994 and Moorwood et al. 1996) that gave us clues on the properties of NGC 4945 and that motivated this proposal., -- High signal--to--noise optical spectra are also available (Moorwood et al. 1996), that we have used to study the ionization structure and abundances in the light cone., - - ISO spectra (SWS) and imaging spectrocopy (CAM--CVF), in the 5--30Mu m wavelength range, have just been obtained. These will be used to constrain the properties of the starbursting population in a spectral region relatively extinction-free., -- We will obtain high angular resolution spectra of the CO stellar band heads, by using the ESO near-- IR spectrometer SOFI at the NTT, to determine the kinematics of the nuclear stellar population, aimed at constraining the dynamical mass, hence the M/L ratio of the stellar population., -- We will apply for optical spectropolarimetry, by using EFOSC1 on the 3.5m--ESO telescope, aimed at detecting polarized broad lines. This will show whether a broad line region is already present at this early stage of the AGN activity and how it compares to more powerful AGNs. As well, it could further constrain the intrinsic AGN luminosity.
