Abstract As part of our ongoing investigation of the M87 jet, we propose to add concurrent NICMOS observations to our already- approved Cycle 7-9 suite of optical (WFPC2) and near-UV (FOC) observations. Our cycle 4-6 monitoring program reveals striking evolution in the jet structure over a 2 year period. A number of superluminal components are seen, with speeds between 2c and 6c; and many components vary significantly with time, with new ones emerging and others fading from view during this short timespan. The proposed observations will give us the unique opportunity to track the secular evolution of the synchrotron spectrum of superluminal components in the jet. The turnover frequency and spectral index of these components is expected to respond sensitively to the acceleration and energy loss mechanisms at work in extragalactic jets. As superluminal components are born, the synchrotron component should become harder and the turnover frequency should increase. Later evolutionary stages should see a gradual softening of the spectrum and a decrease in the turnover frequency as the components fade and synchrotron losses dominate. Models based upon non-simultaneous ground- based data predict that the turnover wavelength of most or all jet components should be between 0.5 and 2 microns. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7866( 9) - 03/30/98 08:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose 2 epochs of monitoring of the M87 jet with NICMOS. In order to provide physically meaningful information on the secular evolution of the spectra of jet components, these epochs should be separated by several months. Over such timescales, our ongoing FOC monitoring program has shown that the superluminal components in the M87 jet vary strongly. We have specified this in the program with "before" and "after" constraints which effectively limit the range of scheduling dates (the two schedulable windows for the orientation we have requested are separated by about 9 months). It is equally important that the 4 visits we have proposed for each epoch be done sequentially, so that the spectrum we obtain can be as close to simultaneous as possible, thus ensuring (as much as possible) that none of the knots will have varied significantly between exposures within that epoch. This has been specified in our phase 2 proposal with two SEQ WITHIN commands. We have requested an ORIENT range which will place the jet along a diagonal of the NICMOS chips. This will ensure that we can observe the entirety of the M87 jet (which is over 20" long) in each filter at each epoch. This is important to the success of these observations, since superluminal components have been observed at a very large range of distances from the nucleus (up to 15"). ALTERNATE ORIENTS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. If these orients are unsuitable or otherwise difficult to schedule, please contact the observers; we are willing to be flexible. Because superluminal components have been found over a very wide range of distances from the jet, our observing strategy is complex. The first two orbits of every epoch (visits 1-2 and 5-6 respectively) utilizes NIC1 (for maximum angular resolution) and the F110W and F160W filters to obtain images of the entire jet. Since the jet is over 20 arcseconds long, we are utilizing two pointing positions at each epoch, and have requested an ORIENT that will place the jet along a diagonal of the NIC1 chip. The integration time is longer (by a factor 2) in the inner jet because higher signal to noise is required in that region. We are also dithering at each position in the y direction by 1.4 arcseconds (approximately the full width of the jet) to facilitate both cosmic-ray removal and flat-fielding, as well as minimize the impact of the bad column near the center of the NIC1 chip). The last two orbits utilize NIC2 and the F205W filter to image the jet. The larger field of view of NIC2 will allow us to observe the entire jet at once. We will chop to a position 650" away from the source which has been carefully selected as a background field, to subtract out thermal background. We also dither both the on-source and background exposures by 2" (for reasons similar to those for the NIC1 exposures). In all cases, we are specifying dithers with POS TARGs and chops with separate point positions, so that the position of the jet is well determined. Each exposure will use MULTIACCUM mode and STEP64 sampling both to increase dynamic range and cope with the problem of saturation at the galaxy's center. Root N noise from galaxy subtraction will be the main source of background for these observations (except in F205W, where thermal background will dominate). We have assessed the feasibility of these observations, and estimate that we will be able to achieve signal-to-noise ratios >20-40 in both the inner and outer jet -- comparable to that already being achieved in our FOC and WFPC observations. Real Time Justification ----------------------- It would be ideal if these observations could be scheduled concurrently with (or within +/- 1 month of) our ongoing Cycle 7-9 FOC and WFPC2 monitoring observations, and we are attempting to to get those observations (currently scheduled for November 1998 and December 1999) moved back so that the maximum amount of information can be gathered regarding both the motions in the jet and the physical state of the emitting material. If it is not possible to schedule these observations close to the WFPC2 and FOC observations, we request that 2 epochs of observations be scheduled in early 1998 (January-March) and near the end of the year (November-December), as indicated by the schedulability guidelines. The observations we have proposed will still allow us to gain (for the first time) very useful information on the variability of the spectrum of individual superluminal jet components in the region where they are expected to peak. This information will be critical to constraining synchrotron loss rates, magnetic fields and other physical parameters. In addition, we have already- approved VLA, VLBA and MERLIN observations in the radio, and ROSAT observations are approved in the X-ray. Our future plans include proposing for AXAF monitoring of M87 concurrent with our already approved WFPC2 and FOC and proposed (this proposal) NICMOS observations, beginning in late 1998.
