Abstract Are the differences between Seyfert 1s and 2s due to orientation of the central source relative to our line of sight (the Unified Models), or are do they represent different evolutionary states of AGNs? WFPC2 images of 40 Seyfert galaxies found by the CfA Redshift Survey reveal a striking difference between the general appearances of Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 2s at subarcsecond scales. On one hand, this is roughly consistent with the expectations of the Unified picture: the Seyfert 1 nuclei are all very bright and saturated, while the Seyfert 2s are considerably fainter. However, many of the Seyfert 2s have nuclei clearly being obscured by circumnuclear dust on 100 pc scales in the host galaxies. Are strongly stellar Seyfert 1 nuclei lurking behind these dust lanes? Or are they dusty because they are recently formed/rejuvenated, as suggested by the evolutionary picture? We propose to obtain J and H-band NICMOS Camera 1 images of the dusty Seyfert 2s in the CfA sample to resolve this issue. Combined with archival WFPC2 images, the VJH colors can be used to derive the total line-of-sight extinction (measuring the amount of cold interstellar material in the circumnuclear regions) and trace changes in the stellar population. These data will allow us to determine if the Seyfert 1/2 dichotomy is best explained by the unified model, the evolutionary picture, or a combination of both of these scenarios. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7867( 5) - 05/18/98 13:26 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our targets are 23 of the 24 Seyferts of type 1.8, 1.9, and 2 from the CfA Redshift Survey. The remaining Seyfert 2 is NGC 1068, which will be available in the data archives from a GTO program in progress. Unsaturated images of the nuclear sources are absolutely required to deconvolve the nuclear PSF and underlying host galaxy, and to eliminate confusion from the wings of a saturated nuclear image when measuring the low surface-brightness circumnuclear regions (a limitation of archival WFPC2 images of the bright Seyfert 1s). To achieve our science goals in the circumnuclear regions, we will need to have a good S/N match between the NICMOS J- and H-band images and the WFPC2 F606W images. A mismatch would result in false color gradients in low surface- brightness regions and introduce significant errors into our analysis of the isochromes. There are thus two competing exposure criteria: the total integration time to satisfy our circumnuclear S/N requirements, and the maximum single integration time that avoids saturating the active nucleus. To achieve this high dynamic range, we intend to use the MULTIACCUM mode with 1 read. To calculate the total exposure times needed to match our existing WFPC2 PC images, we measured the S/N of the lowest surface-brightness regions visible in each, and also estimated the limiting S/N for the 500s exposures used for all of our WFPC2 images. The PC data have S/N=10 in regions with V=20 mag/arcsec^2. Assuming typical colors for the bulges of spirals of V-J~2 and V-H~2.5 (Peletier & Balcells 1996, AJ, 111, 2238), this corresponds to surface brightnesses of J=18 and H=17.5 mag/arcsec^2, respectively. The NICMOS exposure time calculator gave total on-source integration times of 1000s per filter to obtain S/N=10 at these levels. Taking into account overhead for guide-star acquisition and dithering to eliminate bad pixels, this amounts to 1 orbit per target. To measure the nuclear luminosities of these Seyfert 2s, we require exposures short enough to avoid saturation. For this estimate we used the K_psf magnitudes of McLeod & Rieke (1995) to estimate an upper limit to the flux at K (assuming all of K_psf is due to the nucleus, an over-estimate). Assuming J-K and H-K colors of AGNs based on Neugebauer et al. (1987, ApJS, 63, 615) for the PG Quasars gives a conservative estimate of the J and H magnitudes to input into the NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator. The table below lists the estimated maximum exposure times for J and H in columns 2 & 3, respectively. These maximum times are upper limits, as the effects of extinction and/or a steeper nuclear power-law slope will decrease the flux in the F110W and F160W filters, making our estimates conservative, while still keeping the operational overhead reasonable. We have obtained and reduced WFPC2 broad-band F606W PC1 images from the HST Data Archive (AR-6380, PI: Pogge) for all of the target galaxies except NGC 4388 (for which there are no archival data). These data and those for the remaining CfA Seyferts have been described in Pogge & Martini, submitted to the ApJ on 1997 July 25. Additional archival WFPC2 images in other bands have also been collected and reduced, and are ready to be combined with the proposed NICMOS observations. Ground-based near-IR (JHK) long-slit spectrophotometry at a resolving power of 800--1300 of all of the CfA Seyferts will be carried out using the MOSAIC IR imager/spectrometer on the MDM 2.4-m Hiltner Telescope starting in the 1998 quarter. OSU astronomers are now members of the MDM consortium and have guaranteed access to 1/8 of the time from June 1997 through May 1998, with access to our full final share of 1/4 of the time beginning June 1998. We are also applying for KPNO 4-m time with MOSAIC to obtain spectra of the fainter dusty Seyfert 2s in the sample (proposal to be submitted to KPNO 1997 Sept 30 through the normal TAC, not as part of OSU's guaranteed time for providing the MOSAIC instrument for use at KPNO).
