Abstract We propose to observe in the near-IR broad bands 2 nearby radio galaxies, NGC 4261 (3C 270) and M84 (NGC 4374, 3C 272.1), that have gas disks and spectroscopic evidence for ~ 10^9 M_\odot black holes. In these galaxies the gas disks have provided a direct estimate of the black hole mass. In both of these galaxies there is evidence for offsets between the black hole and the galaxy center; in velocity (M84) and in position (NGC 4261). Some models for shallow cuspy light profiles in luminous ellipticals require that black holes spiral into the galaxy center. We estimate that a massive black hole, if offset from the center of the galaxy, should distort the stellar distribution over a region large enough that we should see a wake or asymmetry in the isophotes. However study of the stellar distribution in the nuclear regions is complicated by the presence of the dust itself. Near-IR images will provide more accurate measurements of the surface brightness profiles in the central arcsec of these galaxies, allowing us to see directly how the black hole is affecting the stellar distribution. Study of shape and symmetry of the stellar profiles in the central regions should determine if they are consistent with the gas disk/black hole systems moving with respect to the stellar component of the galaxy and allow us to test models for how the black hole spirals into the center of galaxy. Near-IR colors maps will determine the location of dense gas responsible for the obscuration and fueling of the AGNs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7868( 2) - 11/20/97 08:20 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ NICMOS images of M84(NGC4374) and NGC4261 will be taken with filters F160W, F110W, and F205W using Camera 2 to obtain nearly diffraction limited sampling. These filters correspond roughly to atmospheric window associated J,H, and K broad band filters. We require 3 infrared broad bands so that color differences can be used to descriminate between extinction and emission from the central source and background stars. An overhead of ~ 9 minutes for guide star acquisition will be required per orbit. The orbital visibility for these two objects is 52 minutes. This results in a total on-source time of 43 minutes where we would spend 1 orbit on each object. Using the NICMOS exposure time estimator we estimate with 14 minute integrations at F110W, F160W, and F205W on Camera 2 we achieve a signal to noise of ~ 130 -180 per pixel for M84 with a central K band surface brightness ~ 14 mag/''^2 (Pahre & Mould 1994, ApJ, 433, 567) and H-K ~ 0.25 and J-K ~ 1.2. These high signal to noise values will allow us to measure colors accurately in faint dust features at high spatial resolution. Deviations in the shapes of the isophotes would also be accurately measured at the faintest positions most distant from the nucleus. For both visits the three filters are observed at each of 4 positions rather than doing 3 spiral dither patterns. This gained about 10 percent in exposure time with the current version (7.1.2) of RPS2. The NGC4261 position is an HST one from Ferrarese et al. 1996, ApJ, 470, 444. The M84 position also an HST position from Jaffe et al. 1994, AJ, 108, 1567. Real Time Justification ----------------------- G. Bower has STIS spectra of the disk in M84.
