Abstract Our existing WFPC2 F814W data provides compelling evidence that the luminous IRAS source FSC 10214+4724 at a redshift of z=2.3 is a gravitationally lensed quasar. Because of the high magnification of this source and its strong rest frame optical - -UV emission features, further HST observations provide the opportunity to study the continuum and ionized gas structures in this source on physical size scales previously reserved only for the nearest AGN. We propose to use the NICMOS 1 & 2 cameras and the F113N, F164N, F110M, F145M, and F204M filters to image FSC 10214+4724 in the light of redshifted NeV 0.3426Mum, OIII 0.5007Mum and the nearby continuum. Coupled with the planned GTO HAlpha+NII observations in the F215N NICMOS filter, these data will enable us to construct a picture of the Narrow Line Region over a wide range of excitation and density and map out the morphology of the line and continuum emitting zones on scales as small as 50--100pc at z=2.3 -- an order of magnitude finer scale than would be possible without the intervening gravitational lens. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7870( 3) - 03/05/98 14:59 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our NICMOS observations are specified to achieve high signal to noise images and allow us to carefully sample and precisely locate the features including the counterimage. Detection of the counterimage with adequate signal to noise ratio measures the lens magnification, thereby making the source model much more robust. The fluxes in the emission lines and the redshifts of the lines were taken from Elston et al. (1994) and Soifer et al. (1995). In each of the narrowband filters, based on the observed equivalent width, the line will contribute >80\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The continuum images were chosen to be in filters that are comparatively line free, and as close as possible to the corresponding narrow filter image so that they can be used for subtraction of the weak continuum contribution to the line image as well as for determining continuum structure. The spectra of Soifer et al. show that filters F145M and F204M contain only weak lines (HeII 0.4686Mum and OI 0.6300Mum respectively) over the portion of the filter range covered in the spectra. No strong lines in spectra of quasars are known to exist in the portions of the spectrum not covered by the spectra of Soifer et al. and so the estimated contribution of the lines to these images is ~ 5\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ No good moderate of broad band filters exist to directly obtain a line free image of the continuum close to the NeV line. However, we can combine the F113N image with an image in the F110M filter to obtain both continuum-only and line-only images. F110M contains both lines of the NeV 0.3346Mum,0.3426Mum doublet but no other strong emission lines. The ratio of these lines is independent of physical conditions, and will therefore be constant throughout the source. Since we know the response to line and continuum emission of both filters, we can form linear combinations of them that include only emission from the continuum, or only emission from the lines. In addition, we can obtain a high signal-to-noise image in F110M in a fairly short time, which we can compare with the F145M image to look for differences associated with the 4000Angstrom\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ break (We chose not to use the F145M exposure for this continuum subtraction because it is on the longward side of the 4000Angstrom\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ break in the rest frame, and thus might have substantially different structure.). We will obtain a 600 second exposure in the F110M filter, achieving a signal to noise ratio of 20 per pixel on the continuum source. Our calculations have shown that combining the F113N image with the F110M image will not degrade the signal-to- noise in the final line-only and continuum-only images, irrespective of whether individual pixels are continuum-dominated, line- dominated, or somewhere in between. Based on the photometry of Eisenhardt et al. (1996), the lensing galaxy will be detectable in all 5 filters with adequate signal to noise to be used as an astrometric reference for measuring the relative source positions and sizes (changes in positon and arc lengths of 0.05'' will be easily measured, and are typical of changing arc lengths as the emitting region changes location by ~50 pc in the source plane). The visibility of FSC 10214+4724 is 55 minutes which, after guide star acquisition, leaves us with 46 minutes for integrations and related overheads in the first orbit, and 49 minutes in successive orbits. In order to facilitate cosmic ray rejection, we will take all our observations in MULTIACCUM mode, which requires an additional overhead of approximately 1 minute per image. In the first 3 orbits, we can therefore obtain the F164N (1 orbit) and the F113N images (2 orbits). The telescope background is fairly high in the F204M filter, so we shall dither the source around the array (the angular size of FSC10214+4724 is much smaller than the 19.2'' NIC2 field of view) to enable accurate background subtraction. The overheads for this image will therefore be greater. If we split the observation into four 150 s observations, the total overhead will be 201 s, and we will be able to fit this, the F110M image and the F145M image into a single orbit. We will be able to fit 5 images into 4 orbits. Avoid scheduling during an SAA passage if at all possible. If that can't be done, the first two orbits are the ones which will have least impact on the overall science if they are affected, and the last orbit will most affect the science.
