Abstract The JVAS/CLASS surveys have been the most successful to date at finding arcsecond- scale gravitational lenses, almost doubling the known number (11 lenses found of which 10 are new discoveries). A surprising result of the survey is the relatively small number of double as opposed to ``quad'' configurations---of the 11 JVAS/CLASS systems currently confirmed only 3 are doubles. The doubles are under-- represented by a factor five on the basis of conventional models of the lensing galaxy population. This is a proposal to observe the best candidates (six in total, five of which are doubles) from our final phase of radio follow--up observations for observation with NICMOS. These observations will play a major part in confirming or refuting these candidates and will increase our knowledge of the types and ellipticities of lensing galaxies. When we have established the total number of lenses in 8000 JVAS/CLASS sources we will be also able to place significant contraints on the cosmological constant. Based on the current lensing rate in JVAS/CLASS (1:500) we expect that the majority of the six candidates in this proposal will be confirmed as lenses. Our cycle 7 NICMOS observations of the 11 known JVAS/CLASS lenses are proving spectacularly successful. With the observations proposed here we will have a complete set of NICMOS images of all the lenses in JVAS/CLASS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7873( 3) - 04/16/98 08:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ These observations are aimed at detecting and imaging relatively faint (estimated V~23) galaxies in the presence of point sources of similar magnitude. We require a resolution of <0.2 arcsec and request the same wavelength as that adopted for our Cycle 7 NICMOS observations i.e. 1.6Mum. This choice of wavelength is a tradeoff between reducing the effects of dust extinction compared with V and I band observations with WFPC2 and unacceptable penalties in resolution and thermal background. We propose to use the F160W filter with camera 1 in order to fully sample the PSF. We have so far received data from NICMOS Cycle 7 for 6 out of the 11 confirmed JVAS/CLASS lenses. These were all observed for 2 orbits and in each case we detect the lensing galaxy and lensed images with high signal--to--noise ratio. For the present proposal therefore we are requesting only a single orbit per candidate.
