Abstract We propose to combine NICMOS images with existing WFPC-2 images to search for underlying, old stellar components in 20 faint blue compact galaxies at z ~ 0.2 to 0.8. These galaxies are excellent candidates for spheroidal galaxies (such as NGC 205) caught in the act of undergoing a major star-forming event: Keck spectra reveal velocity widths Sigma ~ 50 km s^-1, WFPC2 images show extremely small sizes and high surface brightnesses (half-light radii of order 0.3 arcsec, or 1.5-5 h^-1_50 kpc), and ground-based photometry yield very blue optical and near-infrared colors. Combined, these measurements suggest masses 1000 times less than typical L^* galaxies, yet these galaxies lie within one magnitude of L^*. Their colors and luminosities can be understood to result from a recent burst of star formation. Without additional prior or subsequent star formation, these galaxies will fade by several magnitudes after a few Gyrs. Are we witnessing, in-situ, the last major episode of star formation of today's low surface brightness spheroidals? The answer hangs critically on the amount of fading. Hence it is essential to determine the number of old stars lurking beneath the young population. We have compelling evidence from WFPC2 images that these galaxies have optical colors gradients. The near-infrared is necessary, however, to reveal color gradients large enough to separate young and old stellar populations. Only NICMOS imaging provides enough spatial resolution and depth to resolve these gradients. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7875( 3) - 07/20/98 09:26 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We request 26 orbits to image 20 very faint, compact, very blue galaxies in the F160W filter using Cameras 1 or 2 of NICMOS. For these sources we already have a wealth of data: emission-line velocity profiles from Keck echelle (HIRES) spectra; complex optical image structure, size and shape measurements from WFPC -2 images; optical and near-infrared colors and redshifts from ground-based imaging and spectroscopy. The F160W filter is chosen to maximize S/N (minimum background) while going as red as possible. Compared to the existing WFPC-2 F606W and F814W images which provide rest-frame B to V for most of our sample, the NICMOS images will sample a factor of 2 longer in wavelength near the rest- frame 1 micron portion of their spectral energy distributions. Each galaxy will placed on the optimal center of Camera 1 or Camera 2 (depending on target size) and imaged between 500-5700 sec in F160W, split between two positions offset by ~2.25 arcsec. Offsets nominally shift the image by integer+1/2 pixels in x and y. We have selected the optimum focus for the NICMOS camera used as the primary aperture since spatial resolution on par with WFPC2 is critical to the science. Exposure times take into account the extreme blueness of the galaxies, and aim to achieve a S/N=6-10 per pixel within the half-light radius of each galaxy using MULTIACCUM mode (with SPARS or STEP sampling sequence) to improve cosmic ray rejection. Such S/N is a minimum necessary to reliably search for color gradients in these galaxies. To make exposure estimates, half-light radii have been measured directly from the GO 5994 optical data; H magnitudes have been estimated from our extensive optical and near-infrared ground-based photometry. Average surface brightness in H within the half-light radius is typically 18.5 mag arcsec^-2, although as much as 1.5 mag fainter. Given the compactness of our targets, Camera 1 is essential to retain the highest spatial resolution and match the sampling of PC2 optical images. Two CNELG at lower redshift will be imaged with Camera 2 to gain field of view. The targets are separated enough that a single pointing will not be able to image more than one, but are are close enough (< 20 arcmin) so that some objects will share orbits. Hence the orbits will be well packed. However, we have been careful not to overpack the orbits. There are also no roll constraints since there will be only one primary target per pointing, even though coordinated parallel images are requested (see below). As a result, most visits are scheduable at 50% or greater. Coordinated parallels have been requested so that all three NICMOS cameras will be in operation. This will reduce or eliminate the "bars" effect, which will be useful for our study of the surface-brightness distribution of the CNELGs at low levels. However, the principal reason for the parallels is to obtain serendipitous targets for astrometric alignment of our CNELGS with the WFPC2 data. Our fields enjoy deep, high precicision astrometry. Since we are looking for color gradients between WFCP2 and NIC1 or NIC2 images, it is critical to have accurate astrometric alignement. The depth of our reference data and the NIC1 observations should be sufficient for a few additional reference sources to be detected. While we have been informed that no coordinated parallels may be requested using WFPC2 or STIS in parallel with NICMOS, we would like to request that should this become available (as pure or coordinated parallels), that we have the opportunity to request them. The increased field of view of WFPC2 would guarantee our ability to accurately astrometrically align our NIC1 and NIC2 images with on-target WFPC2 images already in hand. In the event the full program cannot be completed, we prioritize our data into two groups (by visit #) as follows: First group 10-13, 15-18; second group 1-9, 14. Targets in both groups are scientifically equally as important, but while WFPC2 images will ultimately be obtained for all 20 targets, they are already in hand for the first group.
