Abstract This program is to obtain parallel NIC2/F160W and NIC1/F110W images of NGC 5128 and hence resolve the stellar population of early-type galaxies in the infrared for the first time. These data, in combination with existing WFPC2 F814W and F555W observations of NGC 5128, will yield the first infrared luminosity functions for the stellar populations of giant ellipticals as well as unique optical/infrared color- magnitude diagrams for individually resolved stars. From these data we will: (1) measure the spread in ages and metallicities; (2) detect stars above the tip of the red giant branch, and (3) provide a sensitive search for an intermediate-age populations; (4) determine the dominant contribution to surface brightness fluctuations at infrared wavelengths in a giant elliptical galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7877( 4) - 05/18/98 13:41 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The photometric errors set a limit on the minimum integration time that is required to obtain a significant signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Crowding raises stars to brighter magnitudes and also makes the LF looks smoother. The number of stars in the first magnitude interval below the TRGB sets an upper limit on the surface brightness level that can be observed at a given distance and a given resolution. To estimate integration times, and assess the problems of doing photometry with crowded fields we have simulated NICMOS observations of NGC 5128. A synthetic image was generated based on the Baade's Window luminosity function (LF) of Frogel & Whitford (1987). The image was convolved with the instrumental PSF. We added the appropriate (constant) sky level, the Poisson shot noise from sky, and the read noise. The photometry was done on the image using DAOPHOT and the extracted LF was compared with the input LF. We calculated the exposure time required to produce a luminosity function that goes down from the TRGB by 3.5-4 mag. This interval was chosen so that it is possible to compare the measured color- magnitude diagrams with globular clusters red giant branches. The surface brightness level was chosen upon previous estimates of crowding effects by Madore & Freedman (1995) and based on these simulations. For NGC 5128 the optimum surface brightness is 21.0 mag/sq arcsec in F160W and this infrared (IR) surface brightness lies within the existing WFPC2 field (Soria et al. 1996). Thus it will be possible to construct optical IR-color magnitude diagrams for this galaxy. We need to fit NIC1 and NIC2 inside the field of WFPC2/CHIP-3 without specifying an ORIENT. The best way to do this is to locate the mid-point between NIC1 and NIC2 at the center of the WFPC2/CHIP-3 field. To accomplish this we will set the NIC2 Target Position equal to the center of WFPC2/CHIP-3 and then move the target to the mid-point of NIC1/NIC2 using the POS TARG command. We will observe NGC 5128 using NIC1+F110W and NIC2+F160W in parallel for the first two orbits, and NIC1+F160W and NIC2+F110W in parallel for the last orbit. The observations will be done in MULTIACCUM mode. On each of the first two orbits, we will obtain 2 frames, dithered with respect to each other by ~ 1 arcsec, to take care of bad pixels and cosmic ray persistence. Images will be dithered 4 times during the last orbit to reproduce the same dither pattern for the two different filters of each camera. The visibility period for NGC 5128 is 55 minutes. For the first orbit, we incur an initial overhead of 367 s (guide star acquisition); in each subsequent orbit, there is an initial overhead of 316 s (guide star reacquisition). There is an additional overhead for the first two orbits of 102 s (= 2 * 26 s + 2 * 25 s) dither 1'' within each position MULTIACCUM and for the last orbit of 77 s (= 2 * 26 s + 1 * 25 s). Thus the first two orbits will net 5631.8 s, and the last orbit 2815.88 s. Thus the three orbits will accumulate a total of 8447.68 s. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Real_Time_Justification Additional Comments ------------------- TELESCOPE POINTING- The spacecraft pointings have been chosen to image the existing WFPC2/CHIP-3 field observations with the NICMOS cameras. Another proposal (Id: 7874) is studying the stellar population in the shells of NGC 5128. To interpret their data they require information on the underlying stellar population -- which we are measuring. The Soria et al. (1996) WFPC2 field is the natural control field which we explicitly requested to observe in our original approved proposal. We are coordinating our observations to eliminate the possibility of redundant observations and to maximize the data on the underlying stellar population. We have agreed to observe the same field (WFPC2/CHIP-3) but with different filters. As originally proposed, we will observe in F110W and F160W using NIC1 and NIC2. It is agreed that proposal Id: 7874 will observe this same field using NIC3+F222M. Therfore, we would prefer that our observations be scheduled together with the proposal Id: 7874 so that we can measure simultaneous F110W/F160W/F222M magnitudes without systematic errors due to long period variables.
