Abstract This proposal addresses two fundamental issues: the stellar content of elliptical galaxies and the calibration of the elliptical galaxy distance scale. The nearest normal giant elliptical galaxy is NGC3379 at a distance of 10--12 Mpc; individual red giant stars have already been detected with WFPC2 in its halo. With NICMOS, we can study in greater detail the stellar population of NGC3379 from observations of resolved stars. We propose to obtain images of three widely spaced fields using the F110W and F160W bandpasses to construct a J-H color-magnitude diagram of the red giant branch in the halo of NGC3379. These will be the first such data for a normal, luminous elliptical galaxy and will allow us to address a number of fundamental questions. Comparison of the position and width of the red and asymptotic giant branches with theoretical isochrones will measure the metallicity, metallicity spread, and presence of intermediate age populations in NGC3379. The luminosity function of the red giants can be compared to that inferred from surface brightness fluctuation measurements, testing the calibration of this distance indicator. NICMOS imaging will also help improve the red giant branch tip distance, which can be compared to the other distance estimates for NGC3379, which are all tied to Cepheids. Finally, candidate Mira variables can be identified by observing at 2 different epochs, providing another probe into the star formation history and present stellar population, and possibly an independent distance estimate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7878( 4) - 05/18/98 16:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose NICMOS imaging in F110W and F160W for three fields in the halo of NGC3379. Two fields will be at the inner and outer edges, respectively, of the WFPC2 region observed by Sakai et al.\ where the mean surface brightness is Mu_B=27.1mag/(square)"\ and Mu_I=25.2mag/(square)" (at ~ 360" from the nucleus.) In these fields, scaling from the number of stars found in the fields of Sakai et al., we anticipate finding 100 to 200 stars down to 1.0 magnitude below the RGB tip, and several hundred more another magnitude fainter. From the NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC), 5 orbits in F160W and 3 in F110W will produce S/N=8-10 (integrating over the PSF and assuming 512s/orbit) using Camera 2, our primary instrument, for stars with H=24.9 and J=25.8. This is 1 magnitude below the RGB tip. We have adopted a distance modulus of 30.3 for NGC3379, the high end of the distance estimates, and use the results of Frogel & Whitford to define the metal-rich giant branch tip luminosity. The third field is a region of higher surface brightness with Mu_B ~ 25.4 mag/(square)", at R ~ 180"\ from the nucleus. With five times the density of stars, crowding is expected to be the limiting factor in the photometry, especially below the RGB tip. However, this inner field is of great importance for a number of reasons. The inner field provides the opportunity to look at changes in some aspects of the stellar population including numbers of AGB stars and the location of the RGB. Theories of elliptical galaxy formation can be tested by establishing how these properties change with radius. Additionally, the inner region is of high priority because it offers the opportunity of ground-based observations to directly test empirical spectral synthesis and the SBF distance indicator by applying them in the NICMOS field. See the Supporting Observations section. The WFPC2 images produced about 10, 000 stars down to ~ 0.5 mag below the RGB tip. Scaling by the ratio of detector areas and allowing for the increasing RGB luminosity function down to 1 to 1.25 mag below the tip, we estimate finding 100-200 stars in each of the two outer NICMOS fields. For 200 total stars, this is roughly 1 bright RGB/AGB star per 15*15 pixels in NIC2; this is enough stars for a well-constrained measure of the mean metallicity. In these fields, crowding will not be a severe limitation. For the innermost field, with 5 times as many stars, there will be roughly 1 bright RGB/AGB star per 8*8 pixels in NIC2. Crowding from fainter giants will be a serious limitation, but the bright AGB and RGB tip stars will stand out well against the background and part of the motivation for observing the inner field is to improve the statistics of the bright stars, especially above the RGB tip. From the WFPC2 images, we estimate finding only 3-5 AGB stars in each outer NICMOS/NIC2 fields and 5 times this number in the inner. With the oversampled PSF of NIC2, many of the severely crowded objects can be weeded out. Since the RGB in an H vs.\ J-H color magnitude diagram is nearly vertical, blending of stars will not severely affect the location of the RGB ridge line, on which the mean metallicity estimate is based. Such blends, if undetected, may corrupt the luminosity function, we note. We also request parallel NIC1 and NIC3 imaging; although NIC1 will not go as deep, its finer scale will provide additional information on the degree of crowding in the adjacent NIC2 fields while also helping to boost the statistics by adding 33\ images will not be optimally focussed, but will be necessary for detecting sufficient numbers of the brightest AGB stars and Miras which are poorly represented in the NIC2 fields. To reduce the impact of flat-field and intra-pixel sensitivity variations we propose to dither the NICMOS observations at four positions for each pointing. This means that the readnoise becomes significant and we would therefore use MULTI-ACCUM mode (N_read=10) and CR-split the exposures at each dither position. We would schedule the observations over 2 epochs, 2 months apart, with nearly identical orientations to look for Mira candidates in all 3 NICMOS cameras. Two visits are required in this case.
