Abstract With the advent of 10--m class telescopes combined with the high spatial resolution of the HST, it is now possible to study the internal kinematics and structural properties of galaxies out to a redshift of z ~ 1. For the first time we can derive the fundamental structural parameters (e.g. disk scale length R_d, rotation velocity V_c and mass M) and use them to directly trace the structure evolution for classes of galaxies. Recent models of galaxy formation contain predictions which can be directly tested with such observables. We propose to obtain NIC2 F160W images of a sample of 21 galaxies in the redshift range 0.4 <= z <= 1 for which we have previously obtained rotation curves on the Keck Telescopes, and for which WFPC2 F814W images already exist. The I flux comes from restframe UV and B for these galaxies, though, and thus the images are heavily weighted by young star formation regions and very sensitive to the effects of dust. We propose to use the NICMOS images to map the surface brightness of the underlying long-lived quiescent stellar population to measure the fundamental disk scale lengths. Combined with rotation curves from Keck, this will be used to verify the theoretical prediction that, at a fixed V_c, R_d should increase by as much as a factor of two from z=1 to z=0. In addition, we will subtract NICMOS images from blue WFPC2 images to reveal the young stellar population whose flux and spatial distribution will be compared to young populations in local spirals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7883( 5) - 08/28/98 09:11 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Sample Selection: This sample of 21 galaxies contains all sources with published rotation curves at redshift z >= 0.4 to date (Vogt et al. 1996, 1997). The galaxies were selected on the basis of disk structure with no evidence for recent or current interactions, and represent a unique study of the velocities/masses of normal disk galaxies at high redshift. A sample size of 21 permits robust statistical analysis. NIC2: The 19arcs2 coverage of NIC2 is more than sufficient to cover our target galaxies, and the 0arcs075 pixel scale provides the critical spatial resolution for characterizing substructure and mapping luminous star-- formation regions within the images. Exposures and Depth: The sample is magnitude limited at I = 22.5. We expect to be able to achieve a SNR ~ 1 per pixel out to 3 disk scale lengths for 16 of the galaxies in a single orbit, a signal level adequate for our image analyses (the faintest 4 sources require 2 orbits). Note that a number of the galaxies (especially the faintest) are very red (V - I > 1.3), and thus are stronger in the IR than a simple examination of V magnitudes would indicate. As our sources are concentrated in three fields we will be able to observe all 21 galaxies with only 13 HST visits, an efficient mode of observation. Team Expertise and Contributions: Our full team has considerable experience with the Keck Telescopes and HST. Vogt and Phillips have published the only samples of spatially resolved rotation curves and analyses of the Tully--Fisher Relation at high (z >= 0.4) redshift to date (Vogt et al. 1996, 1997). Simard is the author of a sophisticated surface photometry analysis package which has been proven to be effective at HST high--resolution image processing ( c.f. Guzm'an et al. 1997), and Faber has extensive knowledge of local stellar populations, kinematics, and galaxy properties. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Spectra: Our 21 sample galaxies come primarily from three fields (HDF, GSS, SA68) with extensive optical ground--based and WFPC2 imaging available to us. We have already obtained spatially resolved rotation curves from strong emission lines ( e.g. Lambda3727 ionO2 for all, and also H Beta and Lambda5007 ionO3 for the lower redshift portion of the sample) for the entire sample on the Keck Telescopes. We are committed to a multi--year program of Keck spectral observations in these fields, and so well positioned for any supplemental spectral observations that might become of interest as a result of the NICMOS data ( e.g. improved spectral coverage, minor axis spectra). HST: Two of our 21 galaxies have Cycle 6 WFPC2/F814W observations pending, projected to be completed by February 1998. Faber is a CoI on this program (6838).
