Abstract Recent HST images confirm that Uranus is undergoing atmospheric changes as the planet inches toward equinox in 2007 (parts of its northern hemisphere are now moving into sunlight after being in darkness for many years). GO 6818 (Hammel et al.) yielded excellent PC1 imaging of Uranus (NICMOS provides even better discrimination for vertical aerosol distribution than PC1, but was not available in Cycle 6). The data revealed strongly wavelength-dependent latitudinal structure and the presence of visible-wavelength cloud features in the northern hemisphere - the first ever so detected in the modern era. One orbit of GO 7429 (Tomasko and Karkoschka) was devoted to Uranus NICMOS imaging in six filters. Like the PC1 images, the NICMOS images show strongly wavelength-dependent latitudinal banding and reveal several discrete features near 30 degrees north - these features have the highest contrast ever seen for a Uranian cloud. The timescale of the changes on Uranus is unknown, but some models predict it could be rapid. Furthermore, this is the first opportunity to detect some regions of the northern hemisphere on Uranus. NICMOS will be used to image Uranus during this unique epoch of change. Adequate sampling of all longitudes in the northern hemisphere, where the newly detected features appear, requires 3 orbits. When possible, observations will be coordinated with ground-based imaging, spectroscopy, and photometry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7885( 4) - 05/27/98 08:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Selection of Filters: Our choice of filters is dictated by lessons learned from the single Cycle 7 NICMOS orbit of Tomasko and Karkoschka. The six filters of GO 7429 revealed the complexity of Uranus in the near infrared. Though WFPC2 images displayed primarily a bright South Polar Haze and a darker Equatorial Region, the NICMOS images displayed a number of belts and zones varying significantly from filter to filter. The 14 filters of our proposal are designed to pin down the vertical aerosol distribution that creates this diversity. We propose to use 10 filters in every visit, three of them twice per visit. The remaining filters are used in pairs in alternate visits. Description of each Filter: F090M, F110M, F160W, and F187W cover complete methane windows. F108N and F190N probe the continuum only. F095N probes very weak methane absorption. F097N and F113N probe deep methane bands; in combination with F095N and F108N, respectively, these are better, closer pairs of (near) continuum and strong methane band than any WFPC2 pair. F171M and F222M probe yet stronger methane bands. F170M, F204M, and F207M probe wings of methane bands and are important links between very different latitudinal structure seen in continuum and deep methane band filters. Timing in each Orbit: The proposed exposures for each visit fit into one orbit according to RPS2 7.1.2. Exposure Sequence: In each visit, we run through all our NIC1 filters, then through all our NIC2 filters. Finally, we repeat three NIC1 filters on another position. NIC1 and NIC2 are used in parallel recording the background while the other camera is exposing Uranus. In order to fill the available parallel time, two short exposures are added with filters providing important spectral information on surface composition in case a Uranian satellite is in the field of view. Visit spacing: Uranus rotates once every 17 hours. We want to space our visits by two or three full rotations in order to determine rotational periods for cloud features. Shorter spacings would yield less accurate periods. Longer spacings may be longer than the lifetime of some cloud features. We want the spacing to be slightly more than two or three full rotations in order to probe different longitudes while conserving sufficient overlap of longitudes between successive visits. Column 2 (Visit) shows the positions we expose the filter in each visit (A-C are on NIC1, a-c on NIC2). Albedo (Column 3) is based on images of GO 7429 and on the shape of Uranus' spectrum. Column 4 is the flux per pixel in milli-Janskies, followed by sensitivity from the NICMOS Handbook (Column 5) and exposure time (Column 6). These three values multiplied yield the expected signal in electrons per pixel (column 7). Column 8 lists the thermal background from the NICMOS Handbook. The final column 9 indicates whether the filter was used in GO 7429. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Observing window: Our recent PC1 and NICMOS images show that the latitude band near 30 degrees north is currently the most interesting region on Uranus due to the presence of multiple high-contrast discrete features. The sharpness of the NICMOS images will yield very good center-to-limb photometry for most southern latitudes, but northern latitudes--particularly the band of interest--are more challenging. The sub-solar latitude will be further north next year, improving northern hemispheric visibility. The apparent separation between the band and the limb varies by some 40% due to the changing viewing angle, and to a small degree also due to the changing apparent size of the disk. The optimum time is near the end of May 1998 (the worst is at the end of October 1998). Therefore, we request to schedule our observations within six weeks of 21 May 1998. However, we recognize the limitations of the HST scheduling, and would rather have the data at a non-optimal time if the alternative is no data at all.
