Abstract We propose to extend our IR survey of gravitational lenses and gravitational lens candidates by obtaining NICMOS images of 14 additional lens systems or candidates (11 small-separation, 3 large-separation) and of the 4 wide-separation lens candidates that we excluded from our ongoing ``CfA-Arizona Space Telescope Lens Survey'' (CASTLES, GO-7495). As with GO-7495, we plan to waive any proprietary period for our data. Our goals are: to confirm cases of lensing, for example by discovering lens galaxies that have previously escaped detection; to produce accurate models, particularly of lenses suitable for determining H_0 from time delays; to estimate photometric redshifts for lens galaxies lacking spectroscopic redshifts; to measure the mass-to-light ratio and its evolution for the lens galaxies out to z~ 1; to compare the dark and luminous matter distributions of the lenses; to probe the interstellar medium in distant galaxies using differential extinction between the lensed images; and, to use the lens redshift distribution and optical properties to constrain the cosmological model. The extended CASTLES will potentially quadruple the current sample size of lens candidates that are useful for cosmology and for studies of galaxy evolution. By including wide-separation lenses, we will also circumvent the biases of small-separation lenses against lensing by very massive galaxies, groups, or clusters of galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7887( 7) - 02/25/98 15:19 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to obtain NICMOS images of the systems indicated in Table 1. To maximize our sensitivity to lens galaxies, we will use the F160W filter for the NICMOS observations. The faintest known lens galaxy (Q 2345+007) has an R magnitude of ~25. Typical elliptical lens galaxies at z = 0.5 will have an R-H color of 3. Even H = 22 can be reached at a S/N=10/arcsec^2 in 2500 sec, or 1 orbit. We chose the critically sampled NIC2 pixel scale to allow good PSF fitting, while still preserving a reasonable field-of-view to look for outlying galaxies. Ellipticals in the anticipated redshift range will produce a strong detection in the central few pixels, and S/N = 20-30 within an effective radius. This is sufficient to measure lens centroids to a fraction of a pixel, and structural parameters (ellipticity, position angle) to about 5\\ L_* at z = 0.5, allowing easy detection of foreground concentrations of matter, or of galaxies that might cause shear near the lens redshift. For the very bright lenses, for which a half-orbit will suffice, we will use the remaining time for a J band observation. We chose to dedicate 2 orbits to the few systems with no visible lens (Table 1), to maximize our chances of detecting the faintest galaxies, or to set the faintest possible limits. Based on our experience with NICMOS, we will use fairly large dither sizes (~ 4'') for removal of hot pixels and bad columns and for background determination. We will use a slightly skewed box dither pattern, with fixed orientation on the detector, specified by POS TARG instructions.
