Abstract We propose studying massive young and intermediate aged clusters in the spiral galaxy M33. We will use these clusters as a stellar laboratory to study the bright asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars expected in their fields. Similar studies can not be done in our galaxy because massive young and intermediate aged clusters (and the luminous AGB stars they produce) are not found in the Milky Way. While no direct observations of AGB stars in M33 clusters have been reported, a survey of AGB stars in Magellanic Cloud (MC) clusters has produced results which conflict with theory, leaving many questions unanswered. Also, our WFPC2 observations of the reddest clusters in M33 have revealed the presence of extremely red horizontal branches (HBs) in 9 of 10 clusters surveyed, suggestive of intermediate ages. Confirmation of this by observing luminous AGB stars would be a stunning result since all other (albeit weaker) evidence points to cluster ages > 10 Gyr. NICMOS is superbly suited to these cluster studies because: (1) NIC2 has excellent resolution with sufficient field of view to observe entire clusters, (2) NIR photometry is the best wavelength range for measuring bolometric luminosities and temperatures and (3) the M33 giants can be observed efficiently in the NIR. These observations will also be used to test an important distance scale technique, will serve as a template for age estimates of general stellar populations in distant galaxies, and can be used to study cluster evolution and the age-metallicity relation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7888( 6) - 06/23/98 17:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The MULTIACCUM readout mode will be used for these observations, and a simple square-wave dither pattern will be undertaken (using, in most cases, 4 dither positions) to help with background subtraction, mosaic construction and reduction of flat field uncertainties. We will observe each cluster for two orbits, using NIC2 as the primary camera, obtaining exposures in F110W (512s), F160W (896s) and F222M (3744s), the three NICMOS filters closest to the ground- based J, H and K. We have used the NICMOS exposure time calculator (ETC) to show that, with our exposure times, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ~10 will be reached with NIC2 and the F222M filter for giant stars with K=20.2 lying 1.5 mag below the estimated tip of the RGB. We will go considerably deeper in F110W and F160W, reaching SNRs of 45 and 40 respectively for such stars. Since good K data is important and the depth of our CMDs are clearly limited by our F222M images, we have checked the values from the ETC by hand, using the standard equation for aperture photometry and the latest values for the background, read -out noise and NIC2 sensitivity. We find that the aperture photometry SNR is 12.0, agreeing well with the ETC value. Note, that the NIC2 camera field of view is slightly larger than the largest cluster size. The proposal is separated into two visits because 10 orbits exceeds the limit for no interruptions by the SAA (3 clusters are observed in the first visit and 2 clusters in the second visit). Both NIC1 and NIC3 will be used in parallel to study the field star environment near the clusters. Besides helping us understand field star contamination these parallel observations will be important for estimating the potential of ground-based observations of the field AGB population in M33 (the degraded resolution of NIC3 will restrict the results, but NIC3 may provide useful data depending on the focus at the time observations are taken). Real Time Justification ----------------------- None required for these observations. We intend making a detailed study of the field star population in M33 from the ground, both for intrinsic interest and to understand field star contamination (a substantial problem for the MC study of FMB). Followup spectra will be taken of luminous AGB stars in clusters and the field.
