Abstract Stellar collisions and interactions in dense star clusters are fundamental to the evolution of globular clusters and galactic nuclei. The highest stellar collision rate suspected in the Galaxy is in the obscured bulge globular, Terzan 5. We shall identify compact binaries formed, and ejected, in this cluster with Paschen alpha (F187N) vs. continuum (F187W or F190N) imaging to identify emission line objects and CVs. By centering NIC1 on the bright eclipsing (1.8h) millisecond pulsar 32" from the cluster center, we shall also conduct a sensitive search for its counterpart and both constrain the pulsar spin up and cluster gravitational potential, while the highest resolution NIC1 field surveys the cluster core. Scaling from our successful H Alpha vs. R (WFPC1) and followup FOS programs in NGC 6397, we expect at least 30 emission line CVs in the cluster core. Ter 5 is both more massive and much more metal rich, enabling constraints on WD and NS production vs. original IMF of the cluster. This cluster can only be studied in the near-IR, and HST resolution is essential given its extreme crowding. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7889( 3) - 11/24/97 19:09 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ NIC2 will be the primary camera, with observations carried out at two different field positions per orbit: (1) "Target_Name: TERZAN5-CEN": at the beginning of each orbit, NIC2 will be positioned on the center of Terzan 5 (for 2180s) to carry out an emission line survey of compact binaries in the cluster core, and (2) "Target_Name: TERZAN5-POS1": at the end of each orbit NIC2 will be positioned on an offset field (for 512s) to perform a similar (but shallower) search just outside the core of Terzan 5. This offset field will be positioned so that using an ORIENT of 297 deg, NIC1 in parallel with be centered on the eclipsing MSP PSR1745-24A. This ORIENT of 297 deg will ensure that: (a) while NIC1 in parallel is centered on the MSP, NIC2 will be as close as possible, given scheduling restrictions, to cluster center, and (b) the slew between positions (1) and (2) will be small (<20") and fast with no problems maintaining guide star lock. We have confirmed using RPS2 that this ORIENT is attainable for a little over one month in 1998. The observations will be divided into two separate visits, since an 8 orbit visit given SAA constraints will impose overly tight constraints. The second visit will be constrained to being 4 HST orbits plus an integral multiple of MSP periods, minus 12 minutes later than the start of the (arbitrary) first visit in order to still achieve total phase coverage on the binary MSP (where 12min = MSP binary period - 96 min). For NIC2 we plan to use the F187N filter for the Paschen alpha emission line search where our goal is to go as deep into the CV (and quiescent LMXB) luminosity function as crowding will allow given the psf. The filter F187W will be used as a comparison continuum filter and F110W will give color information for CV candidates. For each of our 8 orbits, 320s will be devoted to both F187W and F110W and 1540s to F187N. We calculated these optimal exposure times with the ETC and by scaling from our measured R magnitudes and H Alpha equivalent widths for the CVs we have discovered in NGC 6397. Taking account of the distance of Terzan 5 and its large reddening the faintest CVs detected at R = 19.5 in our initial CV search in NGC 6397 would have an ``effective'' R = 22.7 in Ter 5. At our observed wavelength of 1.9Mum, the CV continuum spectrum is totally dominated by the low mass (<~0.7M_sun turnoff mass) cool secondary star, with typical K5 color temperature ~4000K, and an equivalent flux (at 1.87Mum) of 3.7MuJy. Using the ETC, the signal to noise levels reached will be: (1) F187W: S/N = 11 (one orbit) and S/N = 48 (8 orbits), (2) F110W: S/N = 14 (one orbit) and S/N = 57 (8 orbits), (3) F187N: S/N = 5 (one orbit) and S/N = 22 (8 orbits). We need good S/N for F187W so that it does not contribute (significantly) to the error in the emission line ``color'', F187N-F187W (similarly for F110W). (Note that these ETC S/N values are derived just from the central pixel and so using PSF fitting will give better results, however crowding will limit possible improvement). For the MSP with NIC1 we will use F140W to maximize S/N. Using reasonable estimates for the brightness of the companion the ETC predicts we will be able to reach a S/N ~ 12 in 500s (and with psf fitting significantly better than this since crowding will be much less of a problem at 38"). A different dither position will be used for each orbit when NIC2 is centered on the cluster core (using POSTARG's). The pattern adopted will consist of 8/9 points of a 3 by 3 square dither pattern in 3 pixel steps (to correct for image defects such as bad pixels and flat field errors), with sub-pixel offsets in 1/8 pixel steps superimposed on this box pattern (to improve the effective sampling of the images, for better resolution - the ordering of these sub-pixel steps is random to combat possible drift in HST pointing). For the MSP no dithering will be used to maximize the quality of the time series, but a different field position will be used for the final 4 orbits to guard against accidental positioning on a bad pixel. Note that with the reduced thermal backgrounds found on-orbit, as well as the bright cluster background, we do not consider it necessary to chop off cluster (and, in any case, the field star background and extinction in this part of the bulge is formidable; though not a problem within several core radii of the cluster center). Instead, we shall derive averaged backgrounds from the dither. NIC1 and NIC3 images will be obtained in parallel with NIC2 at all times (using the same MULTIACCUM sequences and the same filters, where available, with the obvious exception of NIC1 when centered on the MSP where, as explained above, F140W will be used at all times). For NIC3, F175W will be substituted for F187W, and for NIC1, F160W will be substituted for F187W. Real Time Justification ----------------------- As described above, this program MUST be executed with a HST ORIENT of 297 deg so that NIC1 is centered on the MSP in parallel with NIC2. If the ~month long scheduling window in the first half of 1998 permitting this ORIENT is missed for any reason, then the program *must* be reworked to allow both the cluster center and MSP to be successfully imaged. We shall obtain simultaneous x-ray coverage of the luminous LMXB in Ter 5 with the all sky monitor on RXTE to determine if it is in a high state and thus likely detectable (see below). This will also provide long-term coverage for the much higher sensitivity ASCA observations we shall propose (to be simultaneous with HST), which could detect the LMXB, with its highly absorbed spectrum, even in its low state.
