Abstract We propose to obtain broadband 2.2 Mum images of the compact cavities illuminated by Herbig-Haro energy sources, and to obtain narrowband H_2 images to study how the HH jets originate at their sources. The sources that drive HH jets are among the youngest stars known, with ages of less than 1-2 * 10^5 yrs. These extremely young stars are deeply embedded, and therefore we will study them indirectly via their associated infrared reflection nebulae. It is not clear if these nebulae outline massive flaring disks, or are holes punched by the jets, or are cavities resulting from the envelope collapse process. The proposed NICMOS images of a statistically significant source sample will be used to determine characteristic features of the cavities at the highest achievable resolution so as to compare with model predictions. In order to interpret such images we need to know the location of the embedded source relative to the infrared reflection nebula far better than IRAS positions allow, so a key element here is that we have detected all the sources with the VLA, and therefore know their positions to a fraction of an arcsecond. The NICMOS images will also help reveal if some of the sources are binaries, as would be statistically expected. Finding such extremely young binaries is a first step towards understanding the origin of binaries and their role in outflow evolution. Finally, comparing the broadband continuum images with the narrowband H_2 images allows us to study the jet origin region at hitherto unprecedented resolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7890( 4) - 02/03/98 10:46 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The following changes have been made with regard to the original proposal: 1) We have changed the F212N filter for the F160W filter. This will alleviate possible problems with low signals for some objects, and still allow us to identify where the H2 emission is by subtracting F160W and F205W images, plus we will get information on the extinction distribution. This will fail the RPS2 verification check but we have received word from our backup CS that this is okay. 2) Four objects from the original source list have been dropped (in order to improve s/n for the others) and one has been added. Because actually changing the object in the Phase II proposal will result in a failing verification check, we have _commented_ out the Fixed_Target=3 that we really want, and have re-inserted one of our _old_ targets, HH24-IRS, in its place. This will allow the Phase II processing to go through without any problems. However it is our intention to eventually submit the target and visit information in the commented out lines after approval by the CS and/or TTRB. For six objects we will make visits which are one orbit long, starting with an exposure in F160W, then in F205W and then a sky in F205W. For the remaining three objects our visits are two orbits long, with one orbit for F160W and one orbit for F205W (half on-source, half on sky). Because we wish to do all of our F205W on-source frames consecutively followed by all of our F205W sky background frames consecutively, we wish to make the sky exposures by using a move with POS TARG. Do note that we do NOT make backgrounds in the F160W filter. For READ-OUT we will in all cases use FAST read-out. With regard to ORIENTS, please note the following three points: 1) We give our ORIENT as a range from e.g. 10D to 30D. What we really would have liked to specify is the optimal ORIENT, which is always the middle of the specified range, e.g. 20D +/- 10D. So when scheduling the observations, please try if possible to use the middle value of the range indicated, rather than the limiting values. 2) The reason we have chosen the particular ORIENTS is that we place an elongated object along the diagonal of NIC2. However, any diagonal is equally good, so in addition to the ones we have specified, we can use three others that are 90, 180 and 270 degrees shifted from the one indicated. E.g. if we write an ORIENT=10D-30D, then we are equally happy if you choose an ORIENT of 100D-120D or 190D-210D or 280D-300D. 3) We can in principle accept any orient, in case the ones we have specified limit the scheduling too much. Any data are better than no data, but obviously our science is optimized if the specified orients can be scheduled. We want our sky-background fields to be chosen perpendicular to the axis of the outflows we map.
