Abstract The geometry of BAL QSOs is highly uncertain. One class of popular models suggests that the broad absorption line material arises in a wind driven off the accretion disk or obscuring torus surrounding the QSO. An alternative model has the absorption produced by material in a jet directed along our line of sight. In the first case, we view the BAL QSO at high inclination through the wind with our line of sight near the plane of the disk or the torus. In the latter model, the inclination is low, and our line of sight through the jet is near the pole. We will obtain snapshot images of broad absorption line QSOs (BAL QSOs) in narrow band filters containing redshifted [O II], Hbeta, [O III] or Halpha to search for line emission indicative of extended narrow-line regions. If the geometry of the first hypothesis is correct, the line emission would appear as extended structures lying in the plane of the sky, similar to nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies. If the absorption arises in a jet, then presumably we are viewing the QSO along the axis of symmetry, and any extended emission would either be absent or distributed more symmetrically about the central source as is seen in nearby Seyfert 1s. If we scale the expected NLR of the typical BAL QSO to a size where the nuclear flux would have a comparable dilution in NGC~1068, we would expect it to cover 3 kpc with surface brightnesses of 2 to 60e-15 ergs/cm^2/s/arcsec^2 at z=2. For H_0=75 and q_0=0.5, the angular scale at z=2 is 5.46 kpc/arcsec, so any extended emission would cover ~0.5'', and this would be well sampled by the NICMOS PSFs. The detection of extended emission-line gas structures in BAL QSOs would offer another means of investigating the BAL QSO phenomenon as well as establishing a new probe of material in galaxies at high redshift. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7892( 6) - 12/31/97 11:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our observations of the selected BAL QSO candidates will be snapshots using an appropriate NICMOS camera and filter combination that covers a bright emission line typical of narrow-line regions--- [O II] 3727, Hbeta, [O III] 4959,5007, or Halpha--- together with a broad-band exposure in the same camera to measure continuum emission. We waive the normal proprietary period of 1 year, and request that the snapshot exposures be released after 30 days. Because of the small fields of view of the NICMOS cameras, particularly cameras 1 and 2, a guide star acquisition will be required. Assuming that a typical snapshot observation garners a 20 minute slot in the schedule, allowing for guide star acquisition and instrument overheads leaves ~ 700 s for the science observations. Assuming 600 s for the narrow band image, comparable sensitivities in the broad-band image are achieved in ~60 s. Observations with NIC3 are only useful if the camera is brought to an optimum focus, and should only be attempted if a special campaign is scheduled. As an example of the extended line emission we would like to be able to see, we use the nearby Seyfert 2 NGC 1068 as a baseline. The [O III] 5007 emission of the innermost NLR extends to ~6'', or 440 pc for H_0=75, and has surface brightness ranging from 2--50e-13 ergs/cm^2/s/arcsec^2. The BAL QSO candidates span a redshift range of 1.86 to 2.89. The mean redshift is roughly z = 2, and the mean bolometric luminosity is 2e46 ergs/s. For comparison, the bolometric luminosity of NGC 1068 is 4.2e44 ergs/s (Pier et al. 1994). If we scale the expected NLR of the typical BAL QSO to a size where the nuclear flux would have a comparable dilution in NGC 1068, we would expect it to cover ~3 kpc with surface brightnesses of (1+z)^-4 * 2-50e-13 ergs/cm^2/s^1/arcsec^2, or 2-60e-15 ergs/cm^2/s^1/arcsec^2 at z=2. The other emission lines we are sampling have fluxes 3--12 times fainter than [O III] 5007, scaling by the NGC 1068 spectrum (Koski 1978). For H_0 = 75 and q_0 = 0.5, the angular scale at z=2 is 5.46 kpc/arcsec, so any extended emission would cover ~ 0.5'', and this would be well sampled by the NICMOS PSFs. Using the on-line exposure-time calculator for NICMOS, we find that the continuum emission from the central point sources will be well detected at signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of > 40 through all the narrow -band filters in integrations of 600 s. For the potential extended emission, assuming a 600 s exposure time in MULTIACCUM mode, we reach minimum detectable surface brightnesses (signal-to-noise ratios of 3 per pixel) through the narrow -band filters of 10-30e-15 ergs/cm^2/s/arcsec^2 with NIC1, 2-3e-15 ergs/cm^2/s/arcsec^2 with NIC2, and 0.5e-15 ergs/cm^2/s/arcsec^2 with NIC3. Thus, if extended emission comparable to that seen in NGC 1068 is present, it will be visible in our snapshots.
