Abstract The two types of BL Lac objects offer a unique opportunity to explore the physical link between jet formation and galaxy- scale processes in AGN. BL Lacs are dominated by an aligned relativistic jet, and the frequency of its synchrotron peak defines their type as either ``Low-frequency peaked BL Lacs'' (LBL) or ``High-frequency peaked BL Lacs'' (HBL). The systematically different peak frequencies imply markedly different magnetic fields and particle energies --- i.e., different jet physics. There are reasons to expect differences in large-scale properties as well, based on estimated space densities and cosmic evolution. If so, the host galaxies should be systematically different, which would establish a direct connection between energy balance within the jet and processes on scales 10 million times larger. NICMOS is the most sensitive probe of AGN host galaxies, even for the reddest BL Lacs in our sample. We therefore propose a NIC2 F160W snapshot survey of two carefully selected LBL and HBL samples, well matched in redshift and intrinsic AGN power. The short line at mu_H=24 mag arcsec^-2 corresponds to S/N=3 for a 3-pixel wide annulus at 5^ . endfigure large Description of the Observations Plan: We will use NIC2 with F160W to observe all 29 targets (2 examples in OSF), specifying exposure times (longer exposures for higher z) that roughly mirror the global distribution for snapshots in Cycle 6. For the median redshift, <~ngle z \\rangle=0.23, the total exposure time will be 1000 s. Each exposure will be divided into two MULTIACCUM exposures, with a small dither (15-20 pixels) to account for bad pixels and intermediate- scale flat- field variations. The MULTIACCUM readout mode offers the double advantage of large dynamical range (required for detecting fuzz around bright sources), and pipeline-level cosmic ray rejection. noindent PSFs: For NIC2/F160W there is an on-going Photometric Monitoring Program (\\#7607), executed every month as part of the Calibration Program. The targets are isolated stars, which we will use in combination with TinyTim to model the NIC2 PSF. TinyTim will provide the basic structure of the PSF, including the effects of focus variation across the NIC2 FOV, and the observed stars will provide data on effects that cannot be easily modelled (e.g., telescope breathing). The combination of the two will provide adequate PSFs for this project. noindent Exposure time justification for the median redshift, z=0.23: We simulate the final image with an exposure duration of 1000 s (effective exposure time 500 s) for a galaxy at the median redshift, with ellipticity Epsilon=0.9, using average galaxy and point source magnitudes (shifted from R- to H-band assuming Alpha = 1 for the nucleus and standard galaxy colors 32) of H_host = 16.8 and H_AGN=15.8 and average effective radius r_e = 10 kpc = 2 arcsec from the detected host galaxies imaged with WFPC2 F702W in our Cycle 6 snapshot program 6. noindent Results of z=0.23 simulation: Figure 3a shows the simulated image: the host galaxy is very obvious. The azimuthally averaged surface brightness profile is shown in Fig. 3b. The host galaxy is clearly detected beyond ~ 0.3 arcsec, and the surface brightness limit at 5 arcsec is mu_H=24 mag arcsec^-2 (solid line), the limit for a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 in a 3- pixel annulus at that distance from the nucleus (verified with the NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator). The best-fit of the radial profile, done using an automatic Chi^2 minimization routine, shows that the point source magnitude, the total magnitude, and the core radius of the host are precisely retrieved; uncertainties were estimated using Delta Chi^2 = 6.6 (99\\ for 2 parameters of interest). Real Time Justification ----------------------- No special requirement. noindent Extensive supporting observations: Our team has been carrying out an extensive ground-based and HST program of near- infrared and optical observations of radio-loud AGN, including BL Lac objects, flat-spectrum radio quasars, and radio galaxies. This includes imaging, to study host galaxies and environments, and spectroscopy to measure spectral indices and find redshifts for the BL Lac (where not known) and redshifts of surrounding galaxies. The ground-based observations are well-suited to observations of the lowest redshift objects, for detecting low surface brightness on larger scales than HST, and for getting redshifts. noindent Need for HST: Note that ground-based imaging alone, probably because of the lower resolution, has not been as reliable for determining galaxy parameters. Wurtz, Stocke & Yee 14 observed ~50 BL Lacs with the CFHT and report many host galaxy detections. Where we have overlapping WFPC2 data, however, our results can disagree significantly. In one case, we see no galaxy at a level significantly below the level they reported, and our reanalysis of their data does not show the galaxy either 24. Though they found no difference in galaxy magnitudes between their subsamples of HBL and LBL, we regard the question as wide open. First, we will have far tighter (and more reliable) parameter estimates because of better signal-to-noise ratios and better resolution; second, the image will have additional detail not available from the ground; third, we will have detailed color information. noindent HST and ground-based data: With HST/WFPC2, we have observed 97 BL Lac objects (these were mostly snapshot exposures) 6 from complete radio-selected and X-ray-selected samples, detecting host galaxies in 90\\ z<0.5 and in 3 of the 17 with z>0.5 From the ground, we have gotten subarcsecond images from the ESO/NTT 26, 27 as well as lower resolution images from MDM and Las Campanas, to investigate the very low surface brightness component of the host galaxy in the visible and near infrared 28. We have time in October at the CTIO 4m for a similar purpose. We have studied the environments of BL Lacs using both direct imaging 29 and the Digitized Sky Survey 30. Spectrosopic observations have been made at Lick, Las Campanas, and ESO to investigate the emission line properties 31, physical relation to close companions, and to determine new redshifts. We are also submitting proposals for CFHT (the near-infrared AO system) and for KPNO. Many of these data (along with the proposed NICMOS data, if granted) will be part of Matt O'Dowd's thesis on host galaxies. noindent Analysis expertise: We have extensive experience analyzing HST images to study host galaxies and environments. For characterizing the galaxies, we have developed 1-D and 2-D fitting software pipelines. Unlike most other groups, we use a rigorous statistical approach to evaluate significance of the host galaxy detection, with parameter errors estimated from chi-squared contours 6, 20, 22 (Fig. 2). This gives quantifiable confidence regions for the galaxy parameters and useful upper limits for the non-detections, both essential for statistical comparison of two populations.
