Abstract We propose NICMOS snapshot observations of statistically uniform sample of 50 field galaxies (I_ST <=sssim 21) for which both HST morphological information and spectroscopic redshifts are available. The proposed NICMOS observation will provide their morphology in rest frame NIR wavelengths (8000 - 16000 A), where the effect of dust extinction is less severe, and their near infrared (NIR) colors. The morphologies and NIR colors will be used to study: (i) color gradients inside elliptical galaxies to test models of their formation; (ii) the effect of the dust extinction on the properties of field galaxies at 0 < z < 1, which will help to resolve the large difference encountered between the estimates of the global star formation rate (SFR) from the optical surveys and from the ISO; (iii) the evolution of colors of bulges and B/T ratio of spiral galaxies as a function of redshifts, and (iv) old stellar population in each type of galaxies. The near infrared data for elliptical galaxies will also provide a sample of ellipticals which do not act as gravitational lenses to be compared directly with the V,I,H data of lensing ellipticals to study the role of dust in gravitational lenses and its effect on the estimate of the cosmological constant Lambda. The median redshift of our sample of galaxies is z ~ 0.5 and this corresponds to about one half of the current age of the universe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7895( 4) - 01/14/98 15:14 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our observation will be done with NICMOS F160W band where the background is minimum and the largest wavelength baseline is available to study the effect of dust obscuration. Also Camera 2 of NICMOS will be used for the easier target acquisition and the bigger field of view. The images will be dithered with the square wave pattern at 4 different positions. Each dither position will be moved by 10.5 pixels. The 10 pixel dithering is for efficient flat fielding of the data and the removal of bad pixels and columns, and 0.5 pixel dithering is for getting the higher resolution image. Our previous experiences show that total S/N ~ 100 is necessary for the morphological classification and the modeling of the surface brightness profile. Typical objects in our sample have I_AB ~eq 20.5. With an extreme assumption of the flat spectrum in frequency space in favor of blue object, the total flux of the object corresponds to 2.5 * 10^ -5 Jy (H ~eq 19 in CIT magnitude system). Typical half light radius of such objects is about 0.5 arcsec (Im et al. 1995; Casertano et al. 1996), therefore we get the average surface brightness of object to be 1.6* 10^-5 Jy/arcsec^2. The WWW NICMOS exposure time calculator shows S/N = 5.5 per pixel can be obtained for this object with the exposure time of 1000 secs. Thus, we get the total S/N ~eq 70 within the half light radius, comparable to our requirement of S/N ~ 100. Note that this corresponds to the worst case scenario when the object is extremely blue (I_AB-H_AB=0). Such objects are rare and most of objects in our sample will have I_AB-H_AB >~ 1, thus much shorter exposure time is necessary to achieve the total S/N=100, and the situation will be even better for studying red objects or dust extincted small regions in each galaxy. We will observe all targets with NIC2 MULTIACCUM mode with STEP16. With NSAMP=22 and the dithering at 4 positions, the total exposure time for each target is about 1200 secs (about 1800 secs including target acqusition and overheads). We would like to use the same observing strategy for all the targets in order to produce a uniform set of data.
