Abstract We propose to obtain NICMOS snapshot images for a sample of 50 ultraluminous IR galaxies at H (F160W). These will be matched with our equivalent-resolution WFPC2 Cycle 6 I-band (F814W) observations to produce multi-color images of these remarkable starbursting systems over a wide wavelength baseline and to probe through a significant fraction of the dust obscuration that plagues the shorter wavelength images. A sub-sample of our 50 galaxies consists of objects for which we are obtaining comprehensive spectral coverage: we are already acquiring photometry in the wavelength range 4-200 microns with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and we are planning further observations at other wavelengths. The multi-color HST images obtained for our total sample will allow for the first time a detailed spatial decomposition of subarcsecond structures within these morphologically rich galaxies into separate components arising from starlight, dust emission, and/or dust extinction. In particular, we will study the galaxies' cores, map the spatial distribution of starburst activity, and search for nuclear bars, bright active nuclei, large H II complexes, and young star clusters of the type seen in HST observations of similar objects. Nearly all of these galaxies show evidence for a recent tidal interaction, and we will search for evidence of the merger progenitors near the center of each galaxy, a task made significantly easier with NIR imaging. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7896( 2) - 10/31/97 11:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to obtain H-band NIC2 SNAPSHOT images of ultraluminous IR galaxies from the samples of Sanders et al (1988a,b), Melnick & Mirabel (1990), Leech et al (1994), Kim et al (1995), Clements et al (1996), and Lawrence et al (1997). In the redshift range of our sample galaxies, one NIC2 resolution element (0.15'') corresponds to physical scales between 100 pc and 1 kpc. We include 15 galaxies from the high-flux samples (Sanders et al and Melnick & Mirabel) and 35 galaxies from the low-flux samples (Leech et al, Lawrence et al, Kim et al, and Clements et al) -- for a total of 50 different galaxies. The low-flux samples are particularly suited to comparisons of their HST-resolved morphology with ground- based resolved morphology of the low-redshift high-flux sample -- to determine if these extremely starbursting objects are morphologically evolving or not with increasing redshift (e.g. are multiple nuclei, which are the signatures of on- going mergers, more or less common in the higher-redshift sample? and what is the frequency of bright active nuclei in the different samples?). Our proposed images would be obtained as a SNAPSHOT survey with NICMOS in MULTIACCUM mode (to increase the dynamic range of the images, in case there are bright AGN uncovered in the near-IR, and to provide for improved cosmic-ray rejection). We propose to use the F160W H -band filter, placing each target in the center of NIC2. NIC2 H-band imaging is requested because this is the ``minimum background'' filter -- this configuration provides resolution at the diffraction limit (0.15'') and it provides a wide spectral baseline with our WFPC2 observations. The NIC2 camera also offers a reasonably large field-of -view. NOTE: Since we are primarily interested in the regions in and around the cores of these galaxies, our science goals are not affected by Camera 3 being out of focus relative to the other cameras. Even though we have no orientation restrictions, we will still be able to study some of the extended emission features with Camera 1, while Camera 2 is centered on the core of each galaxy to meet our primary science objectives. We are requesting exposures of 15-20 minutes with NIC2. Consequently, since the pointing drifts at the rate of 1.4 milliarcsec/sec under gyro pointing control and since we cannot tolerate the gyro 14'' 1Sigma pointing accuracy (with the 19'' FOV of NIC2), we specifically request that the observations be taken with Fine Lock guiding. Given the short life expectancy of NICMOS, we choose to waive the full proprietary data rights period for all of the exposures requested here. A sample exposure-time calculation is given below. Typical target brightness parameters were taken from Sanders et al (1988a): H ~ 14 in an aperture of 5'' (diameter). We ran the NICMOS exposure simulator, entering these values: 1 read, the default temperature (5500K), and a flux of 6.2*10^-5 Jy arcsec^-2 (~18 H mag arcsec^-2, from ISR NICMOS-014). With camera 2 and the F160W filter, we obtain S/N ~ 17 per pixel in 15 minutes. We expect most of the flux to be concentrated in compact high surface brightness features (as we are already seeing in the WFPC2 I-band images), and therefore the above indicated S/N value would be a lower limit. Real Time Justification ----------------------- (NONE) We have already received HST WFPC2 I-band imaging for all of the targets in our proposed sample. The proposed NICMOS observations would provide a statistically significant and astrophysically important complement to those data. In addition to the IRAS observations of all of our targets, ISO observations are also underway for all of the galaxies in the complete QDOT sub -sample (the ISO data have been received for some of the galaxies and are being worked on at present). With our already approved Cycle 6 HST WFPC2 programs to obtain V and I-band images, combined with this proposal, we therefore hope to have observations of most of the known ULIRGs at V, I, and H, with comprehensive coverage of the QDOT sub-sample at V, I, H, K, 4.5, 6.0, 7.7, 15, 25, 50, 60, 90, 100, 135 and 200 microns. Over the next year or two we are also hoping to observe these galaxies at 350, 450, and 800 microns with SCUBA on the JCMT, and also at 1200 microns with either JCMT or IRAM. In the end, we would have an extraordinarily powerful data set for studying this sample of remarkable galaxies. The high-resolution HST NICMOS images will be one of the most significant components of the data set, given both the high angular resolution of the images and the ability in the near IR to see through a significant fraction of the dust obscuration that affects the shorter wavelength HST images. Together with the above programs, and our Cycle 6 data, the proposed HST NICMOS observations will lead to impressively complete SEDs and multi-wavelength images and will thus be a crucial final component in a uniquely comprehensive database on a statistically complete set of these important galaxies. In addition to these observations being compiled by our team, a substantial volume of supporting ground-based observations (spectra and images; optical and IR; VLA 20cm Sky Survey maps) exist for the galaxies in the ULIRG sample. These data will provide excellent reference and calibration information for the larger-scale features and hence will be a valuable guide for studying the fine-scale structure seen in the near-IR by NICMOS.
