Abstract We propose a NICMOS snapshot survey of proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) in order to discern the structure of the nebulae and the evolutionary sequence that produces axially symmetric planetary nebulae (PNe). This is a follow-up proposal to our very successful Cycle 6 WFPC2 snapshot survey, which we have used to select for further study the best targets for observing with NICMOS and modelling with our axially- symmetric dust code. The proposed NICMOS observations will provide both morphological details of the nebula, and an extension of our imaging to longer wavelengths, complementing both the WFPC2 observations, as well as the high resolution (<0sec point 9) mid--infrared imaging study by Meixner et al. The greater wavelength coverage will allow us to determine the size of the dust grains since the scattering is wavelength- dependent. Making use of the high spatial resolution, we will also detect shocks and look for the small-scale structures that gave rise to the axial symm etry. Finally, we will search for binary companions and, if found, significantly contribute to our knowledge of their role in creating the axial symmetry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7898( 6) - 07/14/98 15:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ For this snapshot survey, we have chosen 30 candidate targets which cover the sky in order to provide a flexible list of objects for possible open time slots. The list of objects contains a variety of PPNe which overlap with the broadband visible images from our related Program 6364 (still being analyzed) and with the completed Meixner (1993) mid--IR imaging survey for comparison. Since our observations will cover targets in a variety of stages of development, they should be of great interest to others in the community who are interested in the late stages of stellar evolution. To make the data available to everyone sooner, we are willing to shorten the proprietary period for these observations from the default of one year to six months. NICMOS will be used with the K-band filter (F222M) to image the light scattered by the circumstellar dust and to detect possible companions to PPN nuclei. The narrowband filter for Fe II (F164N) (and the nearby continuum filter --- F166N) w ill reveal evidence of shock excit ation. The guiding mode should be Fine Lock. For our calculations of exposure times, we have taken into account not only the magnitude of the central star under consideration, but also the brightness of the surrounding nebulosity and the brightness of a possible companion star. We estimate that the reflection nebulosity emits ~10\ star is likely to be an M dwarf, many magnitudes fainter. In order to adequately observe all three --- AGB star, nebulosity, and companion star --- we determine the exposure time based on the faintest component, i.e., an M dwarf companion. The NICMOS WWW Exposure Time Calculator indicates that a typical F222M exposure will require approximately 6 minutes. The exposure time to detect Fe II in shocks is less certain, but in five minutes we can detect a flux of 10^-16 W m^2 s^-1 (square) " ^-1. With instrument overhead, the requested exposures for each target can be made in one orbit. All images will be dithered in order to remove the effects of bad pixels and `grot' on the de t ectors. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We have supporting observations in visible and I bands from Program 6364. One of us (MM) also has carried out the supporting mid-infrared survey of ~50 circumstellar envelopes surrounding proto-planetary nebulae. The mid-infrared observations will help constrain the dust code models that will be used to model those targets that possess bipolar reflection nebulosity. Our selected targets are at a sufficiently early stage of evolution that the geometry of the circumstellar dust is unknown or poorly-known. The NICMOS observations will therefore significantly add to the current data base of known geometries for the more developed objects that have been investigated from ground-based mid- IR, optical, and radio observations. This is why the supporting mid-IR observations will complement the NICMOS observarions so effectively.
