Abstract We will obtain NICMOS (NIC3 F160W) images of a galaxy at z=5.34, the only spectroscopically confirmed object at z>5. Our goals are to determine the continuum morphology, map the spatial extent of the line--emitting region, and place joint constraints on the age of the stellar population and dust extinction in the galaxy. If this galaxy is a truly primeval object in the process of forming its first generation of stars, its morphological properties can provide critical constraints on galaxy formation models. The near-IR and optical observations proposed here cannot be accomplished from ground-based facilities, and their success depends upon the high spatial resolution and low sky backgrounds only attainable with HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7967( 5) - 05/08/98 09:02 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain NIC3 images of 0140+326RD1 through the F160W filter. The observations are split into 15 exposures (three per orbit) of about 15 min each, and the telescope is dithered between each exposure. The dither positions are such that the target galaxy is positioned only on the most sensitive portions of the array, and the offsets sample 15 positions within each pixel (3x3 1/3 pixel fractional offsets, 5 0.5*sqrt(2) pixel dither patterns on a diagonal, and an extra central pixel pointing). The first exposure in each orbit is an ACCUM seq designed to flush the array after the telescope emerges from earth occultation, the second exposure in each orbit is part of the 5 0.5*sqrt(2) diagonal fractional pixel offsets, and the last two exposures in each orbit are part of the 3x3 dither pattern. The target is positioned on only the most sensitive portions of the array (as determined from the NIC3 flats).
