5. Abstract

This project involves a photometric study of galaxies seen through the bodies of
several Local Group galaxies. The high resolution of WFPC2 images will be used with
automated techniques to identify galaxies at various magnitude limits. For three
different magnitude regimes we will use three different techniques for studying the
optical effects of the dust content: 1) for the brighter galaxies the integrated
colors will be determined and compared to those of similar Hubble types in the
field, which follow a fairly narrow color- type relationship; 2) for a selection of
galaxies that goes to somewhat fainter limits, we will be able to measure magnitudes
in three colors, allowing us to determine reddening by comparison with the field
galaxy color-color relations; and 3) the identified galaxies of all brightnesses
will be counted, using automated techniques, and the counts will be compared to
galaxy densities in the field. The goal is a map of the TOTAL extinction and
reddening through the Local Group galaxies, which can be compared to maps of the HI,
molecular gas and infrared radiation, so that astrophysical conclusions can be made.
